Hey folks! In this video I restored an very unique 2 speed Hand Drill! I found this unique piece in a barn, so it was full of grease and dirt. After a good wash of every part, i restored every part step by step: I started with sandblasting the main body, doing some metal works like filing and sanding, after that i put on some body filler and primer, before i painted it in RAL 9005 Deep Black. After that i went for the gears. While sandblasting them, the original color showed up: it was red. So i cleaned and polished the metal and repainted them with red Hammerite paint. Some smaller parts were cold blued, the shafts got just cleaned because of their fitment. Last step was making a new crank and new handles. I found an old crank in my shop and modified it to fit on my unique Chain Driven Hand Drill. The drill chuck at the end was bought, too much effort to make a new one ;-)
Now this beauty works wonderful again.
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!
If you want to support my channel hit the like, leave a comment, subscribe and share my work. It helps a lot! :-)

I am curious about the cold-bluing. You blued some parts, but not all of the bare metal parts. Would bluing help those other exposed and unexpired areas? Perhaps I missed something.

_accidentally" drill holes in my parents' kitchen floor_ - I put this in the category of work experience. You have to learn somehow. A kitchen floor seems just as good a place as any, after watching your Dad use the drill. In the 1950s my young cousin watched his Dad paint a room flat white then used black gloss paint on the fireplace iron. When my uncle finished the room and went for a cuppa, my cousin decided to do the same as his Dad and painted all the white walls and window glass, in glossy black paint. I would have given anything to see the look on my uncle's face when he went back up stairs and saw my cousin's handiwork. It would have been priceless.

My grandfather had a similar chain-driven hand drill. He had gotten it from a fellow who had worked at the boiler repair shops of a railroad until they retired all the steam locomotives. My grandfather used it to drill mortises in beams for barns and the similar.

Kitchen Troll I hope you still have your grandfather's chain driven drill. Having a tool from a train company is great. My dad was a machinist for H.K.Porter they used to make small train engines for mines and industrial needs. They also made tools. I collect and restore tools that they made at their Boston#Somerville Mass forging plant. I have over 20 tools made there.

I didn't know that. 11:31 😊 Is that because dampness can't collect on a polished surface? Rather than high or low speed, I think of it as low and high torque. The speed is subject to the material being drilled. I've never seen a chain-driven hand drill in Australia. One thing I expected to see was a bicycle-style chain coupler, rather than a nut and screw. Beautiful restoration, Mate. That really was a top effort. It has a paint job better than a Ferrari.

That was absolutely exquisite! That's not a restoration as much as a work of art. As changing speeds require unscrewing and screwing in the handle, instead of using a screwdriver every time I would have made a "manual screw" by taking the screw holding down the handle, or a similar one, and soldering a small metallic plate in it's groove, so that it can be easily turned by hand. A piece of cake for a master craftsman like you, I'm sure. Congratulations again!
