I remember in the story of Miyamoto Musashi.. he fought with a sickle wielding opponent.. he used 2 swords: a wakizashi and a katana, he used the wakizashi to catch the chain and then struck the chain and sickle user with a sword..

I heard he baited him to fight in a bamboo forest were the chain couldt be used well.

IIRC. In old Musashi movie, he used 2 swords against Baiken. In Eiji Yoshikawa's novel, Musashi lured Baiken into bamboo forest so the chain couldn't be used properly.

Not a kusarigama expert by any means, but surely, the kusarigama is a two-handed weapon? By wielding another kama, he's pretty much lost all of the fine manipulations for throwing, parrying, and trapping with the weighted chain. Also, having only one hand to (indirectly) manage the swinging chain means it keeps getting in the way of both his kama, and it shows at close quarters, which is where a kusarigama ought to be strongest once a trap or deflection is effected.

also, I think the chain was on the "wrong" side of the sickle...

It’s like this so you can swing vertically and horizontally striking forwards or sideways, you can effectively strike the opponent’s skull or arms this way. These swinging motions also allow for catching the katana and throwing it to the side. The reason there is only one blade/chain arm and one blade arm is to disarm with the chain blade, parry with the single blade, and go back in for the kill with the chain blade.

My thought process is that the sword guy is just doing what he's trained to do but the kusigarama is so goddamn uncomfortable to fight against that it would push people into using the sword differently, honestly I'd probably try to chuck it at the kurarigama user and tackle.

Contrary to popular belief, Kusarigama isn't a "farmer's weapon". It was made as an actual weapon in mind, meant to be used by a specialist. An expert can shift gears and aim the weight wherever they want it to hit or bind
@Rhythmyk3 жыл бұрын
I did enjoy this video, but the kusari-gama doesn't seem "right". You wouldn't attach the chain to the top of the kama, above the blade, because then you render the kama useless. I've seen kusari-gama as ONE sickle with a long chain attached to the base, and this makes way more sense. You can strike or entangle with the weighted chain, then attack with the sickle. The combat here made it look like the kusari-gama opponent was getting in their own way more than anything else. Would love to see a different version of the kusari-gama in this with a rematch!

Not sure whether they make an effect pair of weapons, but there appears to be traditional Kusarigama styles using two sickles with the chain attached to the top. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmW0lHyrp7OMiqs

Awesome, finally a presentation that is not only legit but actually convinced me that a kusarigama could not be such a useless weapon. The way the chain forces the sword user to close in, grappling, which in turn makes the sickle actually practical makes me understand how, for lack of a better alternative/training, a kusarigama might be useful. Still has the most annoying fanboys in the world tho.
@thorgoan3 жыл бұрын
Very interesting to se how a kusari and sickle can be so effective in a duel, proof of it being a weapon mostly used during the prohibition, so called a farmer weapon made to counter swords and sabers. As a kendo practitioner you are always trained to defeat another sword, trying to gain the center and all, I think that itself might be a disadvantage here :P, would be interesting to get a koryu practitioner and see how it does.

Wow. Took me a decade or so, although it was kinda a 'passive' search, but finally found some cool stuff with kendo. Chain n Sickle, too. I didn't think there were people alive who do anything moderately skilled like this guy with the chain weapon. The few 'hits' this chain n sickle wielder got in, he didn't really do much. He just kinda let the 'ball' follow the trajectory into the target. I don't know if it's 'traditional' to play with the length of the chain, but this guy is having trouble with the length, BUT, so is the swordsman. It's this idea of a 'timed' attack, versus one that you initiate. Chances are that if you elongate the ball 'revolution,' that's the skill you need to work on for skill, rather than the obvious one that your average person would try, which is to shorten the timed attack, so they can 'manifest' and 'control' a hit. A guy like Bruce Lee would probably make it so HE has to dodge the chain too, as the wielder. Anyway. Just found my first 'Sword Road' clip, yesterday. I've always known Kendo works REALLY well in James Bond movies. But. In practice, at the kendo dojo, the staple clip stuff is kinda 'weak.'

Why is the chain attached to the sickle-end of the weapon? Does that not defeat it's intended purpose of disarming from afar and then closing in with the sickle-end?
@uyeah1234 Жыл бұрын
It heavily depends on how you want to use it, as there are multiple types of Kusarigama. Ones chained near the sickle are way way easier to swing around. You only need one hand and your range of movement is greater. They are much worse at parrying and inflicting blade damage, but that's it is why it's one handed your other hand has the lethal weapon. You stop their weapon, or crack their skull with the weight then move in to use your off hand weapon. With an handle chain one you have to use it two handed other wise it is impossible to spin. The chain is constantly in the way of your arm or toroso so you have to the sickle and use the other hand to pivot around a point on the chain. Those are more what you're looking for. It both parries and easily inflicts damage but they to be two handed for most of the fight.

I think that Kusarigama guy could get some more hits counted; there were times when the sickles clearly seem to hit the kendoka, but he's only getting animations on his hit with the ball.
@carlosforma59783 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if the kusarigama is exceedingly finicky and unwieldy, being thus an unreliable weapon, if the fighter with it is not really proficient in it, not knowing the tricks and knacks to using it in different situations, or if the non-lethal reproduction is of too low quality, hindering its performance. I did notice that most of the time the chain's weight was making excessively wide arcs, making it take too much time to face the front again with each spin. It might have been better to hold the chain closer to the weight in order to have faster spins, granting you a more reliable guard, and allowing you to release the chain to get more reach in decisive moments. I'm also not sure if the chain is supposed to come from the tip that has the blade or from the other tip.
@Strunmahmah2 жыл бұрын
By the being a flexible it is harder to master. So I think this guys proplem was low proficiency and low quality weapon. As for whixh end the chainnis coming off of. There are multiple styles of kusarigama and to my knowledge both are historically accurate

@johndough81153 жыл бұрын
Maybe Im mistaken, but I believe the chain would be better to wrap around the OPs leg(s). Once the OP is tangled, you can easily hack them up. I would never just whirl the thing in a static paced circle. Its clear the OP was able to get the Timing on that loop, and attack with success. Instead.. only whip the ball into action, when the OP starts to enter... or start your rotation while you are entering. The goal, is a surprise attack, that the OP is not able to "Time", if he sees it at all.

when he charge, his blades contact the kendoka's face multiple times, in a real scenario that means several cuts in your face, maybe a damaged eye and blood restricting vision, the fight should be over early after.

That is not a KUSARIGAMA if it was the chain and weight would be attached at the handels end and it is often not weilded with another weapon. Traditionally the sicle is used with one hand and the ball and chain are controlled with the other as it was famous for it's use at ensnaring an enemy leg to imobilize them and with the weapon u show that is impossible withoud exposing yourself to a death blow so if ur watching this video for real information go elsewhere these guys don't know ther shit!
