I love your videos, always lots of fun to watch. I really like your FJ, of course I'm an FJ guy myself but yours is really cool. I'm too chicken to drive much in the snow as I am always alone, have no winch and hate digging myself out. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the kind words, my friend! When I’m out alone in the snow, I generally like to go up hill heading in. Then if I get stuck going forward I can usually back out of it. 😅 And knowing I could make it going up hill I can definitely make it back out going down hill. But yes, the winch is definitely a source of security.

Having tried it both ways on my old F250, I concluded that airing down is better, if you are on deep snow. I was never able to float on snow with chains. Beautiful rigs, guys!

Just found your channel and subscribed. Really enjoyed this one. I’ll watch your other videos this weekend. I daily drive a 1988 Landcruiser. Over in the Ellensburg area. 👍

Welcome! Thanks for the kind words. I haven't been to Ellensburg yet, but we are planning a wheeling trip towards that way soon, and exploring Ellensburg while there is on the list. Do you take your Cruiser on the trail?

Thanks! Old jeeps + mountains + snow = good times.

You guys should do a similar test, go as far as he can with chains, then air down to 5psi and then using throttle control and crawling to see if it improves his hi-mark. I'm genuinely curious. I have a 61 Scout with the same tires and ran 5psi without throwing a bead. Love the videos!

We have thought about that and are planning on trying it sometime soon. We are a little concerned that a reduction in clearance will exasperate the challenge. We’ll keep you posted.

@@FnCJAdventurer hopefully the floatation you gain will combat that

@FnCJAdventurer chains are best for low amount of snow/ice, airing down is good when you are one 1ft+
@FnCJAdventurer3 күн бұрын
That’s the hope. His chains are basically shovels - they dig like crazy. But since his tires are only 6.5” wide to start, I’m not overly optimistic airing down will get him the surface area he needs. But there’s only one way to find out 😀

@FnCJAdventurer We definitely have to do some spring snow wheeling this year. Round up as many rigs that are pre 1980 and bring back the 70s to the trails

My $.02: Experience tells me that when you can reach the bottom, chains are great, especially in rotten snow. Narrow tires help you to dig down to firm too. For deep snow wheeling, the largest tire you can fit at VERY low psi (I run 4 or less with 38s on an XJ, 5 with 31s on my '49 CJ3A) will give the floatation needed to stay on top.

We just got a bunch of snow dumped on us. Our next trip is going to included airing down those old bias plies to see how she helps.

Alright I’m buying an off-road clunker to go with you guys, next time you guys head out we can test chains vs airing down vs pure unadulterated speed! I’ll floor it the whole time lol

It would be nice to have an old VW Bug in the group - especially if it was baha’d! To bad you didn’t still have one 😡

Love this kind of snow wheeling, just out having fun with friends! I missed out on my Sand Hollow, Utah trip this time around due to work load.... Drat !! Seeing this just got me thinking to twist my local friends arm into taking his CJ5 out with me in my old Rover and just play for a day in the snow. That'd tide me over until I go meet up with my friends in Moab for Easter Jeep Safari. Not going to miss that one !!

Im restoring my cj2a right now, and I was kicking around the idea of 31”x7.5” KM3’s. But I’ve been told, any tire larger than stock will make the old gutless L134 struggle to move 😅 What’s your experience?
