I always tell my Guys (wildland fire guys) before you start turning screws you need to know where the screws are at. so if you get confused you can return the H/L back to where you started. Count the turns in till the jet stops turning. Write that down. Like 3/4 turn till bottoms out. Then adjust from there. Good info Gordy! Hope that makes sense. Stay safe!

With all due respect to all the other carb tuning videos out there ... this is the first one that makes me feel like I might be able to tune a saw on my own with some practice ... maybe start with a cheaper saw :) Thank you!

If you buy a saw brand new make sure it is not auto tune. Otherwise, you will not be able to tune it the way Gordy shows in this video.

Excellent! I’ve read the manuals and seen many videos on chainsaw carb adjustment but this was the most succinct and helpful demonstration I’ve seen, including the counterclockwise for more fuel, clockwise for lean. I get it now. Thank you!

You have the best approach to teaching this method. I really appreciate how you emphasize the importance of importance of erring on the side of being rich versus lean. So many guys are quick to start screaming that saws need to be leaned out. I've never bought that. Excellent video!👍
@sethkeith6698
@sethkeith6698 Жыл бұрын
I once listened to a guy who told me to go a little more lean...... was ordering engine parts 15 mins later. The consequences of too lean are far worse than too much fuel you can always tell a little about a guy by the way his saw sounds

You should do another one with a rev-limited saw, so people can hear what it sounds like when it hits the rev limiter on the coil, the ignition breaking up sounds quite a bit different than the burble, and maybe show tuning it in the wood. That was a good video, and fun to watch all the logging too. I know you have the power lines, etc to contend with. but, at least it is fairly flat!

Id like to see a video setting up a new MS462, 362, or 661 with the coil rev limiter aswell. I have set older saws by ear but have never setup a brand new Stihl yet so I have been wondering what the best approach is when setting up the new ones.

Thank you Gordy for the information. You actually made things alot clearer for me. I never really understood the lean or rich part of a carb. Lean to the right ... Rich to the left.. Getten ready to put together my small felling saw, a new old stock ms380, factory full wrap. I bought the last set of 3pt bucking spikes for it from you about a month ago. With a muffler mod those 38 mag series wake up, especially with the Bing carb, set her 4 stroken at 12,800 rpm and they rip right with a stock ms460. I prefer the full wrap over the typical 3/4 that stihl normally uses now, because I was brought up felling timber with husky 2100 and 372xpeee.

Good stuff. There used to be adjustable high and low speed jets on 2-stroke outboard carbs. You get the boat going full throttle and open the high speed jet until it just starts to slow down, then turn it back in a little bit. Trouble was most people were doing the opposite, turning it in until the slow down then opening it a bit. Too lean! So the manufacturers took off the knobs and used fixed jets.

I’m ashamed to admit it, but I have to tell the truth. I haven’t watched one of your videos now in 2 to 3 weeks. Simply because we’ve been so busy here where we live in NW Montana. YAAK MONTANA. Snow removal and working on equipment to get it ready for spring. Logging season. In winter it’s simply too much work to try logging. Between getting stuck, And, tearing up equipment because of getting stuck, it’s simply not worth it. Now that I am pretty much caught up, I’m going to kick back, relax, late into the night, and do nothing besides watch your videos and get all caught up!! YESSSSSSSSS!!!

All of my spark plugs are a bit darker than anyone else's around where I live. Had one that I rebuilt, a Stihl 391, that had an almost white plug. Pulled the limiter caps off the carb, set it a bit rich, and haven't had any problems since the rebuild. My 881, which I use for milling, has a pretty dark plug, but it'll pull through anything without going lean.
