Yes, hardwood is a pain to carve. I like ash, the worm holes and grooves look really neat after a couple coats of deck stain. The growth rings pop out.

Another good reason to peel the bark off is it has a lot of dirt on it that can dull your chain quick.

Hey Kyle, I just got a jaw horse. If I'm not mistaken I think you added wood to your jaws for protection from the saw chain hitting them. Could you please show that sometime so I could see how you did it? Thanks, Rick from MN.
