Lumberjack Smokestack

Lumberjack Smokestack

2 жыл бұрын

I’ve been needing to get some boards milled up in order to complete my kid’s tree house and get around to building a composting toilet at out property where our animals are kept. Got 17 2x4x8’s and 2, 2x10x8’s out of this run. Probably double that this week. For me this is a very cost effective and time saving way for me to get lumber. Thanks for watching.

I think it comes down to someone who enjoys the process. Milling looks super methodical and I think it’s rewarding at the end of the day as well.

On nice big planks like that my wife who did a lot of the milling, would sit on top and push with her feet. A string to the throttle worked well. It also gets you away from the exhaust😂

I've seen a sawmill like that it was an Alaskan, but it had rails with a winch and a cable.
@LumberjackSmokestack
@LumberjackSmokestack 7 ай бұрын
Rails are only needed for the initial cut. After that the mill is adjusted and rides on the flat cut surface. The winch systems are add on’s to make it easier

The single best vid yet- real time on hardwood! I just bought a 395 power unit. Do you recommend a 42” bar and a 36” mill?
@LumberjackSmokestack
@LumberjackSmokestack 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, That combination works great for me.
@dalanbronnenberg
@dalanbronnenberg 2 жыл бұрын
@@LumberjackSmokestack Is it worth even investing in a 36" bar and chains? What is the downside of running a 42' bar on even 19" logs? It would seem to be just a little weight and maybe some awkwardness. Even with a 42" bar and a 36" mill the max board is still what, 32"? And a question, does the mill cut better if there is some exposed chain, rather than have the chain always in the lumber while cutting (shorter v longer bars)? Its very unlikely I will be cutting many trees under 20-24" dia. All my own. I have a 2 30" hickory logs, 24-30" white oak and hard maple logs, some huge tulip poplar, and 2 30" red oak logs 10'.
@LumberjackSmokestack
@LumberjackSmokestack 2 жыл бұрын
@@dalanbronnenberg if milling is all you plan on doing with that saw I would go with the 42” bar for the 36” mill. With that combination you can cut 32” slabs.

Why oh why is the starting end not higher than the finishing , its so much easier just helping the saw go down hill instead of pushing ???
@LumberjackSmokestack
@LumberjackSmokestack 7 ай бұрын
Downhill has no noticeable advantage in wood like this. The saw has to cut at the same rate of speed. Gravity is not a major factor.

@@LumberjackSmokestack maybe not but ive been doing this for 49 years and going down hill is easyer , and if your on soft wood like douglas forget skip chain just take the rakers of a normal chain , you will get decent chips instead of half chips and dust , let the saw do the work downhill with less grooves , you could try it and tell me it dont work , ive been doing this since the early 70s
