I'm working with the Husqvarna 36V System since this year and I love it. I'm a tree sergeon and landscaper and the Husqvarna Programm is perfect for me. Stihl has not enough power on the chainsaws and DeWalt is not everywhere to get in Germany. But I like the workshop tools from DeWalt, it's very good quality. Pellenc is a bit too expensive and only with backpack battery to get. Not even ideal to have a cable on a arborist saw in the treetop. I like your channel and the way you are doing your business. Best regards from Germany

I don't know if a battery saw is worth it yet for a guy that does a bunch of tree work, but for the landscape guy that takes out the occasional shrub or small tree it would probably make your life easier over a cheap gas chainsaw that will give you fits.

I'm more than mechanically inclined, I've been a professional and hobby mechanic all my life and maintaining gas saws is easy for me. However my right rotator cuff is worn out so I could cut all day but pull starting hurts and hurt quickly! I just got the inexpensive DeWalt 20V saw and put it to work today. Dropped and limbed a 10" gum on one charge, and a key advantage is no prep other than bar oil and chain sharpening. Next buy will be either a 60V DeWalt or the 58V Echo but the little one will get the most use because unless you are cutting down telephone poles trees aren't perfect cylinders!

I run both a 60v DeWalt chainsaw and a couple of different Stihl chainsaws. I like both. I'm a carpenter with all the DeWalt flexvolt tools anyway so I have 10 batteries. I've used this on the job a few times. It's a great tool to have. It pays for itself after a few uses. This chainsaw shines for the average homeowner, carpenter, and landscaper. It's nice to have around the farm! Little to no maintenance. The Stihl is what I use when I have a big project to get into... Which doesn't happen very often for me. I actually invested in their 60v weed eater too. It's nice for little projects around the farm that I can't get while mowing. Again.. no maintenance. If I need to get rammy with a bunch of weeds I whip out my gas weedeater... And it's not even because the DeWalt can't handle it. It's just a mental thing. Lol

Most good battery saws output around 1200 watts under maximum loading. This is not much different than corded saws, but since battery saws are usually brushless, they are a bit more energy efficient. Saw batteries usually contain anywhere from around 150 to 300 watt hours of energy. It's on the specifications for your batteries. A half kilowatt will cut a fair size pickup truck load from 16 inch logs. If you want to cut firewood, have enough batteries to total more than 500 watt hours and have multiple chargers. Fill your wagon or truck, go home, unload, rest, eat, drink and while you are doing that recharge your batteries. This shouldn't take more than about an hour. Switching batteries isn’t a big deal like fueling up with gas, but it's nice not to have to switch. Batteries are the expensive part, so stick with a single platform. I happen to already have a rather large collection of Makita LXT batteries and chargers. The Makita oil reservoir is large enough it doesn't need topping off until about 500 watt hours of use. For those who aren’t familiar with batteries and electrical terms, voltage doesn’t measure power or capacity to do work or chain speed. Amp hours isn't work or total power either. To estimate how much wood you can cut you need volts, amps and time. You need watt-hours. Multiply the voltage of your saw by the amp hour rating. This is watt hours. Be careful, some companies use “max" or maximum voltage for marketing. Always use the actual running voltage which has to be a multiple of the 3.6V lithium cell. Here’s some data for comparison that I’ve acquired for those who are interested: Ryobi 40V (36V nom) 5Ah battery weighs 3.05 lbs (32) x (5) = 160 watt hours Briggs & Stratton (Victa) 82Vmax 72V nom 5.7 lbs (72) x (4) = 288 watt hours Husqvarna 36V (nom) 4.2 Ah battery weighs 3.21? lbs (36)x(4.2) = 151 watt hrs Greenworks 72V nom (80 max) 4 Ah battery weighs 5.5 lbs (72)x(4) = 288 watt hrs Greenworks 72V (80 max) 2 Ah battery weighs 2.8 lbs (72)x(2) = 144 watt hrs Milwaukee 18V (nom) 12Ah battery weighs 3.7 lbs. (18)x(12) = 216 watt hrs Makita takes two standard tool batteries of any amp hr rating. They all weigh nearly the same. Two (2) Makita 18V (nom) 6 Ah batteries weigh 2.7 lbs. (2)x(6)x(18) = 216 watt hrs. Makita also runs on 5, 4 and 3 Ah batteries with progressively lower run times with the same approximate weight. (2) x (5) x (18) = 180, (2) x (4) x (18) = 144, and (2) x (3) x (18) = 108 Echo 54V 2Ah weights 2.65 lbs (54) x (2) = 108 watt hrs Echo 54V 4Ah weights 4.1 lbs (54) x (4) = 232 watt hrs Dewalt 54V (nom, not max) 4Ah battery weighs 3.2 lbs (54)x(4) = 216 watt hrs Still with 36V 4.9 Ah battery weighs 3.8lbs (36)x(4.2) = 178 watt hrs Stihl with 36V 6.3 Ah (AP 300) weighs 3.8lbs (36)x(6.3) = 226 watt hrs Redback 120V [108?]3Ah battery weighs 4.0 lbs (108)x(3) = 324 watt hrs EGO 56V 5 Ah battery weighs 4.9 lbs (56) x (5) = 280 watt hrs McCulloch 36V (nom) (36) x (4) = 144 watt hrs Most of these saw brands appear as though they cut equally well during use. My Makita with a 16" bar and full chisel chain it seems to cut about the same as the best I've witnessed in videos. I take along tool batteries equivalent to about 500 watt hours and cut all that my RZR can safely handle in steep terrain. I cut 9" length, which requires twice the normal amount of cutting for the same amount of firewood. Let's say you're using a Greenworks 4Ah battery that contains 288 watt hours of energy and it draws 1200 watts while under full load. It can maintain full load draw [(60x288)/1200] = for 14.4 minutes. Of course one seldom maintains constant full load in the normal course of cutting wood, so the battery appears to last much much longer than that. Voltage has little to do with torque or chain speed. High voltage justs allow for smaller wires in the motor windings and connections, and marketing hype. For example, the 18V Milwaukee produces a "ton" of torque and chain speed. The downside is that the motor has to be really heavy & beefy in order to handle high amperes. Total saw weight is important to some. Light high energy density batteries combined with light motors (higher voltage) produces the lightest saws without sacrificing power output.

Years back I bought a Ryobi electric chain saw with a 1' bar, with the intention of using it to clear trails around the property. I wasn't expecting much, as it looked largely like a toy, but it turned out to be a really handy tool. Much lighter than the gas saw, so carrying it on the walking trails wasn't a huge deal, and the Li battery lasted much longer than expected. So yea, I'm for them.

I bought the same 40 volt saw and also the string trimmer. The saw was to replace a 34 year old Stihl 009 that I used for limbing and cutting up small stuff. My 28 year old 029 Farm Boss is still running and is used for felling and cutting the trunk of the tree. The reason I went for the battery powered saw was simple. When you are limbing the fallen tree you are repeatedly setting the saw down to remove trash from the area. So I knew I was going to like not having to restart a saw every 10 minutes. I was pretty sure this saw would be an improvement over the function of the 009 but the surprise to me was how close this DeWalt comes to replacing the Farm Boss also. There is no doubt that this new saw will be in my truck box for work also. Uncrating equipment that comes to the job just got simpler than using the slower battery reciprocating saw. My only complaint, of foresight, is that the saw did not come with a dummy battery that you could keep in the saw while hanging in the barn. Muddobbers, wasps and birds will find that cavity too convenient. No they don't make a case for the thing either...

Thing is a gas saw can be used all day where with a battery you need to charge it. and when it's extremely cold or hot battery's stop working.
@TheOneWhoMightBe8 жыл бұрын
Batteries heat up during use (resistance), so working in the cold isn't a problem unless you're chopping trees in the middle of winter in Montana. Never heard of batteries having a problem with ambient heat though. The solution to having to charge the battery is to have more than one. Chances are once you've bought multiple tools you've also got multiple batteries (and once you do, you can then buy skins to save money). I have two electric lawnmowers, and while I wouldn't use them for paid work, for regular household use they're great.

Yep because of the crap pump gas with ethanol we get now for occasional users especially on 2 cycle equipment the canned gas is needed needed. The only way you could get away from using canned gas is if you drained the carb and let it air dry with the bowl off. A few small engine guys have shown how to store gas powered ope for extended periods of time. I think using the canned gas is the simpler solution though.

Not dealing with toxic chemicals, that's a plus. Way quieter, that's a plus. Lighter, that's a plus. The cost of electricity to charge the battery is negligible. I mean, it can't be that much more than to charge a any other power tool battery. Electric motors are seriously efficient, mid-to-high 90s percent. For example, a full battery in my 2015 electric car will allow me to travel about 85 or 90 miles and it uses the energy equivalent of less than one gallon of gasoline; cost me $3 to "fill up" my car or about $15 per month in electricity, and since I have a full house on grid solar system that cost me less per month than my previous electricity bill it's a pretty slick system.

Curious how it is changing chains on this thing. I have never used an electric chainsaw but I remember going to help a friend and not having my Trusty Stihl 271. We used his saw which was dreadful, chain kept popping off again and again and you had to take apart half the saw to put it back on. Is the Dewalt easy to change and has it held up for you/ have you found a decent use for it?
@Dirtmonkey7 жыл бұрын
Once you learn the trick for each saw the chain is relatively easy to take on and off and tighten up.

With the integration of li-on type batteries, I would buy an electric for consumer or semi-pro use. Id keep one on hand if i were a commercial guy. The li-on batteries offer so much more potential and fewer problems than the old ni-cad units. I just want to know that I can buy chains for me saw 10-15 years from now and they wont become obsolete.

The DeWalt uses the same 16" Oregon bar and chain my Craftsman does, so I don't think there's a problem in that respect. I bought one after I got tired with the Craftsman starting problems, I'm an occasional chainsaw user and electric is just a much better option than having to worry about old gas or messing with gas/oil mixes. As the video showed, one of these 40V li-ion batteries can go a looong way, and I have 3 of them ! , I also bought the string trimmer and the Blower, so running out of battery power is unlikely. The batteries themselves can be expensive, but the tools including batteries cost about the same, so it makes sense to buy a different tool than just another battery... My Toro Weed eater started leaking oil/gas from somewhere, so I got the DeWalt, and the Blower was an upgrade from my corded leaf blower. Overall - less noise, no fumes, no gas/oil problems, easy starting and power to match gas powered equipment. For my needs it's all pro's and no Con's ! #TIACREW !

They should release a 60v variant. The also make a 120v battery miter saw that runs 2 60v batteries in parallel. If they put that in a chainsaw you can have some serious power.

what about the 60v? i have the 12 inch 20v now and i love it!! i dont know how much longer i'll use my Stihl 029s&021.

Awesome video, very prompt and to the point, I like it. Quick question for you though Stanley, Do you carry a portable gas tank (i.e 100 or 50 gal) on the back of one of your truck because of your heavy equipment(s)? I am planning on transitioning to more heavy equipment usage(Demolition & Excavating) and I wanted to know if that would be a good idea or if its practical. If it is ideal and practical, what should I watch out for and know?
@Dirtmonkey8 жыл бұрын
I have 2 bulk tanks- One on a trailer and the other on a truck. Both carry around 100 gallons of diesel fuel

I own the DeWalt 40V with a 7.5 amp battery. What about your DeWalt battery ? I use mine the first time worked great! I do have oil when laying flat on the ground, seems as my fuel chainsaws do the same. I am so far pleased until next month camping in the forest. Thanks! P/S do they sell a case for the chainsaw? I just went out to look at chain oil problem, no more until I chainsaw again...

Nice video, but by 2 minutes I was getting tired of the words at the bottom. Your format is hard to read IMO. And my favorite KZbinr is Allie Knight. I use an Ego mower that I've had for a couple years to mow about 2 acres, and I love it. 10 years ago when I tried battery powered tools, i wasn't impressed, but now I am.

Im a big Stihl fan and I honestly didnt think that the dewalt saw was cutting as fast as a regular gas saw would. Peraonally I dont see myself buying a battery operated saw. Maybe a home owner wouldm. That being said id rather have said homeowner pay me the money for the job.

Gas or Cordless Electric Argument ? depends really, a commercial tree cutter in my area uses both, 90% of the time they prefer the cordless electric start work really early in the morning or even very late w/o bothering anyone then switch to gas if necessary or on a need basis only. Homeowners, demo work, handyman, gardeners will mostly be cordless so gas is only for pros that use them daily. for chainsaw below 24" its gonna be cordless anything larger gotta be GAS.

I use TRUFUEL for all of my 2 cycle tools and engines. The best premix out. I let tools sit for months and they will fire up on first pull. little more expensive then mixing yourself but in the end well worth the cost for me. Zero headaches no more bad gas or plugs.

I have a Worxx 16in electric chainsaw that I bought on Amazon. It isnt cordless, but its great around the house for a junky tree clean up project I have going on. Ive probably cut 20 trees down with it and since its quiet, Im not bothering the neighbors. For $100, Ive got my $$ worth

below 24" cordless chainsaw is king. cordless gets better and cheaper every year that i've been following cordless tools. I would wonder how these things would be in another 5 years my prediction?? it will be amazing. I suspect they'll take over like they did last 5 years

careful draining the gas in residential chainsaws, some have gaskets that will dry out if drained and it will leak. use only premium grade gas and maybe a stabilizer if it will be stored for several months, I only use premium and have only had to replace spark plugs, chains, bars, and air filters on my units. using regular gas I had to device the carbs yearly. $0.30 a gallon difference is worth not having to tear apart your equipment. in a big company you might burn say 20 gal of gas in a chainsaw per year, that is a difference of $6. you can't even buy the gaskets to rebuild a carburetor for that, n7ch less down the hour or two to do it!

Am I right, that those saws don't have teeth on them at the base of the chain? Why is that? The reason for me asking is because as far as I was taught by professional users, you use the teeth and cut close to the base as much as you possibly can to remove strain from the chain, "guide" - the stuff that's in the middle of the loop of chain -, and from the fixings plus more control. Seeing the young lad cutting the tree up felt weird... Good stuff btw!;)

Does the dewalt electric saw have variable speed on throttle? Or is it just one speed only? If anyone knows?please respond. Been pondering buying one of these.

stihl, echo, husqvarna, to name a few. a 20 inch bar is a good versatile starter size. research brands, protective equipment, how to operate & upkeep. learn everything that can go wrong while using a saw, learn how to use it right, be careful, have fun & go make money.

brian king Dolmar/Makita 50ccPS5105/EA5000 respectively, but the best deal on a mid size pro saw is the Makita 6421 aka Dolmar 6400 you can have one shipped to your door for about $550.00 and if you compare spec's with comparable Stihls or Husqvarnas you will see that is a very good deal,and I own all three brands plus others so I am not just a fan boy ! And they have a great warranty 2 years even for commercial use Stihls is only 90 day's for commercial use! Whatever you decide buy your personal protection equipment the same day as your saw!!!! PS if you buy a Makita/ Dolmar forget that safety chain that comes with it (unless you have not had a lot of experience with chainsaws then use it for awhile) and buy a good Stihl RS chain. Happy New Year....
