I purchased a 10" Knipex adjustable in 1978 if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure it was before I hired on with my last employer. (Not 100% as I am getting old and that was a long time ago.) but I still have them. I had to take the spring out a couple of months ago and bend some spring back into it as it was opening up on it's own but put it back and they still work. As a matter of fact, I had them in the tool drawer in the house for a month or so last winter so I wouldn't have to walk out to the barn to get them and my wife got used to them being there and now I have to leave them in the house.

Totally agreeing with you on this one. I find the battery chainsaws are great for the 'few minute projects'. The corded or cordless Stihl chainsaws are common in timber framing shops where chewing out a mortise and tenon before cleaning it up is a great place for this saw. Same goes for arborists doing work up in a tree, the battery life lasts a lot longer when not put under massive non-stop load and so it is a nice convenience when up in a tree. But if there's ever a task that requires trustworthy dexterity, gasoline is the way to go. Especially when temperatures are below freezing and you're relying on that saw to work and the batteries die from the cold.

Run this test back with the new DeWalt dccs677 chainsaw and their 12ah 60v batteries. The now old dccs670 chainsaw clearly is at a performance disadvantage. It was meant as a homeowner larger consumer type saw parallel. Like the 42cc Poulan or 38cc husky 240. Not a pro series 50cc saw. Whereas they market their new 60v offering as a pro-level 50cc comparable saw. I'm sure you are still limited to battery capacity, and it will run on the smaller 60v batteries too. Thanks for confirming that my bias has reason! I believe battery tools in general will continue to make strides in their ability to get work done in a simple, effective manner, HOWEVER, there will always be a limit! Gas powered tools, electric power tools, pneumatic nailers all have huge advantages in their ability to perform a great volume of work for an extended period of time. Being a contractor I will admit I use the 20V/60V battery systems every day, and most of the tools have been fantastic, but they don’t hold a candle to “the real thing”. These battery “yard tools”- string trimmers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers- only offer convenience and zero emissions. When you really need to get a lot done you’ll have to grab a real tool and some gas or electric to go with it! For now at least!

I have to agree. I purchased the 20v dewalt chainsaw for a land clearing job we were doing. I wanted a saw that we could keep near the chipper and trim brush if need be. As soon as I took the dewalt out, it was lighter but I noticed I was using more force to cut trees. That translates to energy and time. And at $180 for the dewalt, I took it back and bought a Stihl MS170 for $170. That saw hands down is amazing. Cuts almost anything we needed to and is light. We only used the MS440 magnum for stumps. For the price, power, and energy you need to expend, buy the Stihl MS170, use VP 50:1 fuel which stores for a minimum of two years in the saw and get cutting.

I have found myself using mine in combination. Petrol/gas for felling and the bigger cuts, my little electric saw for processing and those jobs in confined spaces. Much happier using the battery chainsaw where I can, no spills, low noise and ain't busting my arm trying to start it. Have a cable fed electric saw too, which I use for the static jobs like cutting fire wood or posts, so much safer. Love the test, good stuff.

we do commercial landscaping and tree removal sometimes. We got a echo electric saw for in the reach lift for smaller cuts but it's to bulky compared to a one handed saw in a basket but we do like it for keeping in the truck for random cuts here and there because it's easy to start and use. I did use the electric echo full charge cutting some slabs for a wedding. It did 20 cuts through a few types of hardwood about the same diameter of your logs there before running out of battery. I would never get rid of the stihls we use but I do see the use for the electrics. They are ideal in a tractor cab or truck especially in the winter because no gas to leak or smell
@dreamwolf73025 жыл бұрын
Honestly, my electric saw is great for small trips to the wood pile when i buy a couple cords in tree length, but if im gonna be cutting a full cord into stove length...its the gas saw for me. Electric is convenient sure, but if you have to do a lot of cutting, they just dont hold up over all.
@SherrifOfNottingham4 жыл бұрын
The fact that when battery density gets better the gas powered tools (and cars) have 0 advantage kind of shows what is objectively a better tool though. Fact is if they had a battery in it that held as much cutting hours as the gas tank, the swap out of batteries would be a ton better than the refilling of the gas.
@dreamwolf73024 жыл бұрын
@@SherrifOfNottingham I half agree. My electric saw struggles with Oak and Ash, but with Poplar and Maple it does fine. The issue is tougher wood requires a lot more power, and these electric saws are designed to limit their torque to avoid killing the battery, or in the case of corded ones, to avoid burning the electric motor.

Any person with a gas saw is going to have more than enough gas. Assuming they had time to pack it:) I’m not waiting for batteries to charge. In the time it takes to charge 1, 2, 3 or more batteries I would be finished the cutting job with a gas saw. Even if I had a charger for each battery.
@TheRevoltingMan5 жыл бұрын
There is also the charge time on the batteries. Once a battery is dead it takes hours before it's ready to use again.
@crisco18185 жыл бұрын
The Revolting Man exactly. Especially a battery that was just being used. I assume they don’t charge the instant you put it on charger, I imagine it would have that cool down period before it actually starts to charge.

Anyone else just absolutely love the way that volcano in the background looks? 6:07 Here's an interesting question, what is the potential energy difference between a tank of gas and a 7.5 amp hour battery? It sounds like potentially the DeWalt does not have the same mechanical inertia inside of its powertrain and causes smoothness issues..
@Smitty_Werbenjagermanjensen114 жыл бұрын
This makes sense from a physics standpoint, gas itself has a much more energy in it, this is the same in electric cars as electric cars have fractions of less energy in them it’s just that an electric motor is much much more efficient in turning battery power into a spin on a motor

Indeed What i have seen though as work load goes up the electric hype goes down they put a 3500 lb trailer on a tesla here on yt it sucked 60% of the battery in 64 miles they had to turn ac off slow down etc. Not a problem for gas vehicle towing a trailer to the lake for rhe weekend isnt a big deal with gas

when i worked for the power company we did all our own line clearing and we used small gas saws in the bucket truck and had some big stihls for the bigger cuts. well they got us some chain saws that ran off the hydraulic tool circuits and you would not believe the power these saws had. they cut so fast and quick and powerfully it was almost scary when i first started using them. i wouldn't mind having a battery saw for home use cause i'm still using a jonsered i bought in 1977.

I own the Husky electric chainsaw along with about 50 Stihl saws (small to large) I find the electric saw very useful as a trim saw while climbing or in the bucket. I like that there isn’t a hot muffler. I like that it doesn’t need fuel and there isn’t any smoke. I also like the fact that o don’t need to pull start it and as long as the battery is charged, it always starts!!!

i am a german carpenter and we have in our company both cordless and petrol chainsaws from stihl. we use the cordless chainsaws mainly when we build new houses to quickly adapt prefabricated walls that do not fit 100%. whereas the petrol chainsaws are mainly used when dismantling old roof trusses where you have to saw a lot of old beams and rafters. all in all i don't want to miss either one of them, especially as we only need two batteries, as as soon as one is empty, the other one is already fully charged so that you only need to change the batteries and therefore there is no big difference how long you can work with them
