Ain’t Nobody was Chaka’s final song with her former band Rufus which is why the instrumentation is so full. That’s a whole band including the composer of the song.

Yeeeaaah, Jack. Stank face on fleek! When I say this woman knows every nook and cranny of a music note and can make it sound like you sitting in a subwoofer when she give it to ya......😯 whew! I nearly popped my side when you said this could be on a movie soundtrack. 🤣 It is. Breakin'. It's specifically in a dance routine montage. You know the 80's & 90's love a good montage moment.

Speaking of Miles Davis. His wifey for a brief time, The Infamous Betty Davis (The first Madonna) is a hidden gem! She goes hard and Wass very influential and far ahead of her time. Back in 1973, Check out her: "Anti Love Song" or, if you dare: "Game is My Middle Name"

One of the reasons why this song is just so damn satisfying is because of how tight and efficient the arrangement is. People don't tend to notice this consciously, but if you listen carefully you start to notice how all the different parts on different instruments all lock in with each other in super clever ways. A couple examples: - The main synth keyboard playing the chords in the verse is actually already playing the rhythm of the main vocals in the chorus. It's a kind of musical foreshadowing, so when the chorus hits, you kinda already feel like you knew what it was gonna be before you even heard it. - The guitar and keyboard riffs at the end of each line in the chorus (after each line of the chorus vocals) are exactly synced up playing the same syncopated rhythm as the hi hats in the drums. This creates a tight accent in the groove at the end of every bar in the chorus that's really satisfying. You feel it even if you don't consciously notice why it's happening. There are a ton more little details like this in the arrangement, all added up together they make the song feel tight AF while also making all the layers feel like they're all totally on the same vibe with not a single thing out of place. The genius about it is how effortlessly it's done and how you just _feel_ how it all works even if you can't put your finger on why. Prince was also a master of this kind of writing and arrangement.

This is hip-hop. And it was used in a movie, "Breakin'" (1984). The song was released by Rufus & Chaka Khan. Rufus is the band Chaka started her recording career with in the early 1970's before venturing into solo work in the late '70s. The song was written by one of Rufus' two keyboard/synthesizer wizards, David "Hawk" Wolinski, who also produced the track, unofficially. Rufus' bass player was Bobby Watson, their guitarist was Tony Maiden. John "JR" Robinson was their drummer at the time. Rufus' other keyboardist is Kevin Murphy who was a founding member and the only mainstay through all of the band's many personnel changes. Chaka got flow for days. She is, at her core, a jazz improvisationalist and typically let's loose during the climax/fade-out of her songs. This is why people in the know don't fux with the single/7-inch edits of her songs. Because in the record company's quest to shorten the song for radio/video, they typically edit or completely chop off Chaka's best parts; the ending, where she let's loose and hits notes not on the charts. In keeping with poor record company decisions, Rufus' then label, Warner Bros., wanted to use a different song as the lead single for this, their final, album. Hawk was not having it and threatened to remove "Ain't Nobody" from the album and give it to Quincy Jones and MJ who were at the time recording the album that became 'Thriller'. Warner Bros. came to their senses and the rest is history. FYI, the players from Rufus are part of the rhythm section on MJ's 'Off The Wall' album. Hawk is also playing (uncredited) on 'Thriller'. Quincy was producing MJ and Rufus during the same time, late '78 through 1979.

the harmonies on the chorus r Chaka's own vocals stacked together..Chaka arranges n produces her own vocals(main n background) on many of her stuffs..n she has her own unique style of phrasing n her sense of timing is something else too..her singing is like a drummer who plays in the pocket...nobody else like Chaka really..that is why she's the undisputed queen of funk.

But since you giving Chaka some love let me give you at least 3 more GREAT vocal songs by her (though there are MANY) 1. Stay - Rufus & Chaka (erykah Badu did a really good remake of this song as well) 2. Got to be there- Chaka (remake of Michaels Jackson’s hit) 3. Many artists have attempted to remake this song, but they have failed to capture the magic of this timeless hit. There's something understated that Chaka brings to her records that just can't be duplicated. Mary and Whitney have successfully remade Chaka songs but with the absence of that Chaka magic. For years I have tried to figure out what it is that makes her music special and the best I can come up with is: subtle magic. In the 90's there was a reggae/rnb artist by the name of Diana King. She was featured on Biggie's song, "Respect," and had a huge hit with the song "Shy guy." She has a massive voice and had did an interesting take on "Ain't nobody." It's worth checking out. There's an undeniable gem of a song that I doubt anyone here will request and I want to turn you on to. It's called "Give me the night" by Randy Crawford. It's remake of a George Benson song. There are two versions by Randy. The single version is awesome, Randy's voice is spectacular. But for those days and nights when you are stressed and in doubt, the chill night mix version is like floating on heaven. You will feel transformed as you surrender to your own peace of mind. This is the single version (it's apparently the less popular version KZbin) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaPViHaKas1mabc This is the chill night mix version kzbin.info/www/bejne/paublKuXjd6pj5I Check them out even if you don't react to them.

Stay! OMG Erykah Badu covered it at the BET Awards in front of Chaka. I turned to my mom like "I've never heard this song by Erykah". My Mom, one of the biggest Chaka fans ever said "That's because it's Chaka's song" Erykah did the song justice, but it doesn't beat the original. Mom was right! Lol

What up Jack!!! Love your reaction to my favorite female vocalist, the incomparable Ms Chaka Khan on this timeless classic, which btw, won Rufus & Chaka a Grammy back in 1983 for the best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocals. Your reaction reminds me of the time when I first discovered the band Rufus, which Chaka was the featured vocalist starting waaayyyy back in the early 70s. Since you were so impressed with her adlibs & runs on this particular Rufus & Chaka classic, I'd recommend "Sweet Thing", "I Know You, I Live You", "Got To Be There", "Love You All My Lifetime", and "Angel". I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
