Love her. Her best songs were the ones she recorded with Rufus way back in the day. It was before my time, but the music was so good then! I once saw Chaka perform years ago, and the performance was a mess. It was extremely disappointing because I have seen her elsewhere and I know what she can do. She shines like a diamond on stage when she's not using. Her real fans know the difference. This performance is the real Chaka. She is in a special class of singers who were blessed with an amazing gift. She could carry an audience in song all night without musicians or backup singers. Hey kids, this is how its done...no skin, no butt shaking, no vulgarity...just a really talented voice.

I know what you mean! I have heard lore about Chaka over the decades, but it never tainted me. Ever since I FIRST Saw her in 1980 (The Budweiser Fest), then at the Ritz 1981 in New York (Luther opened for her...and THAT NEVER happened again LOL), then Summer of 1992...it was nothing but Heaven for me. The 1992 concert was the one ensconced in my brain, as this was during "The Woman I Am" CD release. She sang EVERTHING!!! and when I say everything, I mean even stuff Aretha did! It was like I wanted her to be what I wanted her to be, and she was!! I then saw her the following year with Phillip Bailey...another classic performance where he was singing Chick Corea's Spain and she didn't make her own entrance for her set, she just joined him at the end!!! I was completely caught off guard and had to run back to my seat!! There was nothing like that time at the Atlanta Civic Center where she sang like she never wanted to leave. Her audience is very down to earth with her...like a party, and I think she prefers it that way.
