Interesting Fact: Chaka usually does not allow artists to sample her music, but her son talked her into letting his good friend Kanye West sample this “Timeless Classic” which propelled his career. Chaka allowed him to sample because her son told her that this song was his inspiration for Kanye to battle back from a near fatal car accident that pulled him “Through the Wire” 👍🏿

Does anyone else miss the 1980s; the last decade where love meant something? It was worth fighting for? It was worth "risking it all" for? A song like this could have never been made today. Between the utterly timeless melody and musical performance to CK's insanely brilliant vocal performance but most of all the message... "Through The Fire" is one of those songs that was written for all the lovers out there that would not be denied their destiny. With any hope and a lot of luck, there are still those hearts out there, burning to take it all the way, right down to the wire.

I can't get over how good this song is. The singing, the musicianship, the production, the writing - there's not a note out of place. Perfection. I really feel that the 1980s were the peak of R&B music; the improved production methods and digital technology lent a crisp sheen and high fidelity to the recordings from that era, but the artistry and the songwriting still retained the polish and excellence from earlier eras of pop when players honed their craft night after night in bars, clubs, and music halls. Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, etc: these luminaries were some of the best performers of their generation, and their backing bands and producers were every bit as good! The lyricism of this track in particular is terrific - composed by three industry veterans, David Foster, Tom Keane, and Cynthia Weil - the latter of whom came from the famous "Brill Building" in NYC that produced thousands of hits. They knew how to write sentimental songs without being sophomoric or sappy. Many current songwriters should take note of this style, there's a lot to learn here!

"Through The Fire" I look in your eyes and I can see We've loved so dangerously You're not trusting your heart to anyone You tell me you're gonna play it smart We're through before we start But I believe that we've only just begun When it's this good, there's no saying no I want you so, I'm ready to go [Chorus:] Through the fire To the limit, to the wall For a chance to be with you I'd gladly risk it all Through the fire Through whatever, come what may For a chance at loving you I'd take it all the way Right down to the wire Even through the fire I know you're afraid of what you feel You still need time to heal And I can help if you'll only let me try You touch me and something in me knew What I could have with you Well I'm not ready to kiss that dream goodbye When it's this sweet, there's no saying no I need you so, I'm ready to go [Chorus] Through the test of time [Chorus] Through the fire, to the limit Through the fire, through whatever Through the fire, to the limit Through the fire, through whatever

This is just one of those songs that is impossible to get tired of. Just as fresh and beautiful as ever. Chaka Khan of course gets all my credit, but we have to also hand it to Foster and all the writing, production, arrangement. Songs like this used to be a staple. There was probably supposed to be at least one like this on any album at the time. Good examples include Al Jarreau's "Afterall" and Lionel's "The Only One". But Through The Fire is probably objectively the best. Those glistening keyboards! Oh!!! Just love this gem!

Joseph Babica I completely agree with you. The world was so different back then and we didn’t have anywhere near the gadgets that are popular today. If we wanted to have fun, we would go to a friend’s house and ask their parents if they could come out and play. We never wanted to stay inside and if it was a rainy/stormy day, we would be sad because we had to stay inside. The world has changed so much over the years that you’re right about people not believing that. Maybe a time machine will come along before my last breath and I can have a chance to enjoy those days again and see my loved ones who have passed on just one more time before joining them for eternity.

[Verse 1] I look in your eyes and I can see We've loved so dangerously You're not trusting your heart to anyone You tell me you're gonna play it smart We're through before we start But I believe that we've only just begun When it's this good, there's no saying no I want you so, I'm ready to go [Hook] Through the fire, to the limit, to the wall For a chance to be with you I'd gladly risk it all Through the fire Through whatever, come what may For a chance at loving you I'd take it all the way Right down to the wire Even through the fire [Verse 2] I know you're afraid of what you feel You still need time to heal And I can help if you'll only let me try You touch me and something in me knew What I could have with you Now I'm not ready To kiss that dream goodbye When it's this sweet, there's no saying no I need you so, I'm ready to go [Hook] Through the fire, to the limit, to the wall For a chance to be with you I'd gladly risk it all Through the fire Through whatever, come what may For a chance at loving you I'd take it all the way Right down to the wire Even through the fire [Bridge] Through the test of time [Hook] Through the fire, to the limit, to the wall For a chance to be with you I'd gladly risk it all Through the fire Through whatever, come what may For a chance at loving you I'd take it all the way Right down to the wire Even through the fire [Outro] To the wire, to the limit Through the fire, through whatever Through the fire, to the limit Through the fire, through whatever Through the fire, to the limit Through the fire, through whatever

@georgnesmejanow7676: Really??? Me too, except for Whitney, although I love her too. But for me, personally, Chaka and Sade are actually 2 faces of the same coin that is black music in general. This has a glorious chorus, as a musician myself, the momentum of the chorus I can see from reading others comments, these notes, this melody and her voice has literally lifted people's sprit as they struggled through their life. 🙌😍

FUN FACT: The video for this song was filmed at the historic Los Angeles Union Station Depot in the Downtown area of Los Angeles, CA. First opened in 1939, the transportation and rail hub has connected Angelenos and it's visitors alike with other parts of the Greater SoCal area and the rest of the nation via Amtrak, Metrolink, and Metro Rail for over 80 years. Today it is the homebase for Los Angeles Metro, the area's regional transit provider inside it's Gateway Center Tower .

1. her vocals are effortlessly fire! 2. her look is mesmerizingly beautiful 3. The concept of the video complements the song, and Chaka demonstrates a sweetness, an infectious charm in certain shots. such as 0:43-0:48 and 3:10-3:16. Everything about this video and song is absolutely splendid. In retrospect, I find the chart positions not fitting for such a great song. It peaked at # 60, #15, and #16 on the Pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary Charts, respectively. However, I think it should have made the top ten or even top 5 in each category. When I was younger, I did not appreciate the beauty of this song or simply overlooked it. Today, as a middle aged man, I now know better. Thanks, Chaka.
