This was one of my favorite Genesis games. Brutally difficult yet very engaging gameplay, good musical compositions with somewhat grating instruments, and awesome designs with a rather sickly and diseased-looking color palette... "grating" and "sickly and diseased" usually aren't what one would call good elements, but I see it fit to think they work in Chakan's favor here. Everything comes together to give a sense that the arcane evils you're fighting are significantly more messed up than just being "dark" - the worlds you're traversing to challenge those evils aren't necessarily your average hellscapes either. Nothing in the world of Chakan feels even remotely normal, but... well, define "normal," because I'm pretty sure such a concept doesn't even come close to existing as far as this game is concerned. When the Grim Reaper himself is the most normal thing you've got, and even HE doesn't stay that way at the end of it all... well, it's something unsettling that'll definitely keep quite a few people from sleeping comfortably a night.

This is a definition of a love/hate type of game. It is truly both, I like the difficulty, not the choppiness at times. It's too bad the Dreamcast version got scrapped, it looked incredible.

I was thinking the same thing coming into this. I have a weird love/hate thing with this game: I love the entire concept of a cursed undying alchemist, the oddball fighting mechanics, and the dark setting and creatures, but after beating it one time as a kid (a lot of time spent being frustrated and then digging out strategy guides/tip books for every edge I could get), I can't bring myself to ever play it again. But I always find myself drawn to it when it's mentioned or played by others...

It's unfortunate that this game has such incredible atmosphere but lacks that extra layer of polish (mostly in the gameplay and balance) that could have made it not just a small cult classic but a true classic. Exactly, this game has such an unique unsettling dark atmosphere and art style . But it's quite let down by the gameplay elements, you polish the gameplay and you have an clearer gem. This game is a case of if it was then for me, there are things that could have been there that sadly were not, this game truly had the better potential to rock in the 90s. I'm not sure if today it would have the same magic, but in my opinion it should go retro, back to the 90s but revamped. Chakan is also an fascinating but wildly tragic character, he kinda reminds me of Caleb from the Blood games, both undead "professionals" with an tragic destiny.

This is one of those games that I've owned for 20+ years and have spent maybe 5 minutes playing. I'd like to give it a second try, but now that I'm old I just don't have the time to devote to learning the mechanics of a difficult game. If I were 8 years old again, with no cares in the world apart from which games I wanted to rent that weekend at Blockbuster, sure, but now there is just no time. And when there IS time...like now, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, my old lazy bastard ass would just rather watch a video of someone else play it while I relax and lament how quickly the minutes are flying by. My buddy turned me onto this just a week ago, I sent him a song and he said for whatever reason it reminded him of this game...which he tried to describe, which was pretty much every sword side scroller from 88-93. Said, "You can jump and then down thrust with your sword" again typical game mechanic. I was like, 'Rastan', no then I told him how my little brother used to endlessly play 'Rastan' at the local arcade and the subject got derailed. So the other day he sends me a text...'Oooohooho I remember it now it's Chakan" ok I'll dust off my genesis (fusion 364) and check it out. This game makes me rage like when I was 13 and playing the first couple of mega mans. As an adult I have not felt the controller breaking fury this game allows me. This game is top notch. Right up there with the original 'Ninja Gaiden' (NES) or Metroid...climbing way up and then falling all the way back down. That shit is therapy. thanks for the walkthrough, I was stuck on the 2nd phase of the spider lair, those wall spider farts are too much. Gonna finish the rest on my own and bookmark the resource.

There are some bosses that seem like you're intended to fight fairly ( Ice Beast and the giant bug ) and others where you're almost required to use the right weapon.

I'm a BIG proponent of being able to select your own difficulty. It's why I refuse to play super difficult games anymore. I've always felt that everybody should be able to enjoy games, not just the hardcore or uber gamers. Sure, I've beaten my fair share of the super hard games (both Hotline Miami games, Ghosts 'N Goblins, etc.), but I simply don't have the time to invest in constant practice anymore, not to mention serious carpal tunnel issues that prevent me from enjoying a lot of games anymore. So, gimme a choice instead of forcing it on me.

So many memories beating this... Why didn't you use more potions throughout the game though? The visuals would have been great to see.

The new Puss in Boots movie reminded me of this game. Puss in Boots did what Chakan couldn’t and had the humility to embrace his mortality. A bullet nicely dodged, cat.

@@jay-n_23 but Puss didn’t win. And he accepted to meet Death again when his time comes.

@@SaitohYatate Nobody can or will beat death, you can only postpone it like Puss in boots did. I have a question for you though: do you think Chakan will try to beat all supernatural evil in the Universe, or do you think he'll just give up to Death's curse?

@@jay-n_23 I think one way or another, the game is rigged. Sure, our bodies wither away crumble, but the soul lives on. It's a cycle.

Oh damn, now I realize that this game was made by the same guy that made Ecco the Dolphin. The bad endings and good endings served as inspiration I guess 😅Too bad this game had the sequel rewritten for Blood Omen 2 but now I understand why the similarities in theme and the many "insectoid enemies" that became the Hylden lol

Only ever beat this game with unlimited potions: you get them while playing on easy/practise mode. Normally you wouldnt be able to play the last 12 levels in this mode but you can warp there by using the gate potion on a certain platform in the corridor/level select room.

It took me over a year to beat this one, I remember each level had challenges my young mind had to think in order to overcome. Watching this playthrough, I realize that I could have cheesed some of these boss battles. Still getting to the end to get a blank screen was aggravating. Still I think with some TLC this game could be brought into the modern ear, lord knows it needs it.

Abrasive and strange but I expect nothing less from the creator of ecco the dolphin. I kind of wish he would get the chance to work on 1 last game. Just to see what else he's learned since videogames have become so psychology based in their design.
