A playthrough of Sega's 1993 fighting game for the Sega Genesis, Eternal Champions.
Played through the single player game as Larcen.
Some of the different Sega logo screens are shown at 25:32.
The different stage fatalities are all shown at 26:42.
Eternal Champions is an awesome game. Not quite as mind-blowing as the Sega CD sequel, but awesome nonetheless. It has the same basic foundation as Street Fighter II, but this is far from being a clone. The general flow of combat feels totally different and you aren't allowed to spam special moves. And my favorite part - it features some hilariously sadistic fatality moves. The fighting engine is solid, and it's a shame that Sega attempted to sell it as off as a hyper violent game in the wake of Night Trap and MK hysteria. I do think that it got nowhere near the attention it deserved because people dismissed it as another Time Killers or a generic SF2 clone with blood. Their loss!
The game overall looks great. The characters are big for a 16-bit game and they're well animated, and everything is well colored. It does look a bit rough on modern screens though - there are quite a few faked transparencies that look like checkboard patterns, but on a CRT (or a good CRT shader) it looks really nice. Just be warned, the computer is brutal. If you don't anticipate its moves and get caught in one of its combo or corner traps, you probably won't survive it. Excellent otherwise, though. I love the title screen music!

I used to sit and watch my big brother play this game, it was always too hard for me to figure out at the time. I used to think it was the coolest thing ever, so mysterious and sort of eerie. Crazy how someone posting a play-through on youtube can bring back so many memories of him. Thank you so much for this.

They all have a move or two that is very useful, high priority, high mobility or both which takes no spirit. Larcens wheel kick, Shadows double jump and dive kick. Rax's "throw" with hard kick, which is nutso brutal and can stun allowing you to do it again. Tridents ground blade roll back to bait and retreat while charging a move. Blade's trademark 'lightning' dive with hard kick in the air, letting you jump back away, pressing it as a surprise sudden front dive. Xavier's standing hard punch? That tosses his cane out a very long range as a huge wheel, Slashes quick hard flip kick and absurdly dominant down strike with his club. Once you realize you can charge moves after jumping in (think charge characters in SF series E Honda / Blanca) you jump in with many champions and immediately pull away to charge, work a little poke to soften them and open up. Most moves in this are multi button, a button and a direction or a charge. I personally have a hard time picking a favorite. I love Larcen and Rax but I love Shadow and Midnight's whole design and feel so much. What I think makes this game great is, the characters are not stylized by the martial art they know (which can be amazing don't get me wrong) but they are styilized by being themselves.... A unique concept. They are not just Samurai or karate. The only character that even sort falls into this cliche is Jetta and even she is a hyper fast acrobat that knows the very obscure pencak silat and thows a boomerang.... and you have the obscure like Slash's fight style .... "PAIN" lol Then you assume it will be a cheese fest and unbalanced, but the spirit meter helps a ton there. The crazy thing also is, not every champion has a weapon. While developers can make a hard punch the same damage as a staff strike what they can't fuge on is the range so all sorts of reach. Somehow a Jeet kun do vampire from Vietnam era can fight a caveman with a club or a cyborg with energy weapon with his fists and his 'free' move that brutal gap closing tornado kick. Somehow it remains fairly balanced. And finally why would a 1920 gangster fight an Atlantian or a caveman? The story makes that work as well. It's a wonderful game I'm proud to own a copy and me Sega Genesis type 2 still works.

I've never heard of this, but it has most interesting concept for any fighting game that I've ever seen. The idea that there's all these people from different points of history fighting each other in the places where they died, moments before their deaths, trying to avoid the fates they suffered in reality. I only wish they had more time periods, though. With the exception of the detective, the caveman, and the wizard, most of the characters look like they came out of comic books. It would have been more interesting if there were people from every era: a knight, a samurai, a cowboy etc. But w/e. Hope there's a remake
@kalkazar13

@Artuurs Z. I suppose they all look like comic book characters. What I'm saying is that this concept, in theory, had the best idea for a multiplayer action game, where you can literally choose any character. And I only wish they'd used it to its full potential.

yea this game was one of the hardest fighters i ever learned. fave was trident, then xavier. but this was one of the first games that genuinely had a adaptive NPC element and i call bullshit on anyone who says it didnt. its like either the difficulty ramped up every stage, or the pc was legitimately learning your moves and countering them, because by time you got to the eternal champion i swear that dude was reading my mind. in fact i swear thats how i remember beating the game. id save one move (tridents plasma shot) and never use it through the other levels, then spam the hell out of it in the last fight.

Pretty sure the CPUs in this game straight-up read your button inputs. At least that's what it always felt like to me. It always seemed like they knew what you were gonna do before you even did it. So they read your button inputs and counter whatever you're doing in the first frame of your move if they can.

Surprised this franchise is getting revived in film. Could this mean we'll get a new Eternal Champions game as well?

The Blade character sounds like he was voiced by Keith David, best known as the voice of Goliath on the Buena Vista-produced Gargoyles animated series, which premiered one year after Eternal Champions.

I'm surprised how good the music was. It's not over-composed; it leaves a lot of room for the imagination, but still has a lot of character. I think these songs would sound great remade with modern tools.

I loved this game on the Genesis!! Then there was this one track in the Sound Options that me and my homies would freestyle to. Then later on Bone Thugs N Harmony would use that beat for the Eternal song on the E.1999 album! Ahh, the memories!!

After Mortal Kombat, this is the best game on Sega Megadrive 2. I had this game. A great diversity of simple blows, unlike each other in dependence on the character, from the style of martial art that he owns. Original Super Plays. On the Sega joystick, all 6 buttons were used with blows, three hits on the arms and three on the legs: low strength, medium and strong. And in this game there is a cross between simple strikes and super tricks - spectacular strikes. Some characters have uniforms that are Jetta, Blade and Shadow

Very underrated game but brings back good old memories the first time I got my Sega Genesis it came with the game in a bundle pack!! I would come so close to almost beating it with larcen but the eternal champion at the end was always too tough!! The best thing about this game was the fatalities and some of them were better than mortal Kombat 2 fatalities at the time. I heard that there was a part two of eternal champions but I never played it or seen it I just read about it in game magazines back in the day something these young kids have no idea about!!
