On Monday, January 27, 1986, the crew of CHALLENGER seemed ready for flight. Unfortunately technical issue after technical issue would lead to a weather hold and eventual scrub. Because of the already-scheduled in-flight classroom lessons of Christa McAuliffe set for Friday (Day 4 of the mission), January 30, 1986, Tuesday, January 28th, would be the next available launch date to perform the lessons while kids were still in school on the final day of the week.
However, as history showed the world, January 27th was the final day that CHALLENGER would miss out on a successful launch. The next morning, with America watching LIVE, the CHALLENGER and her crew disappeared in a moment that would last for eternity.
This rare audio record of the CHALLENGER's launch attempt on Monday, January 27, 1986, and the eventual scrub, features audio from commander Francis R. "Dick" Scobee, mission specialist 3 Ron McNair, launch director Gene Thomas, test director Roberta Wyrick, and Hugh Harris, the shuttle launch narrator, as well as members of the White Room closeout crew.
