We’ve been waiting many months for Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, which had a delayed release due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The Call Me By Your Name is easily forgiven with his soapy love triangle that brims with sensuality and hardcore tennis matches.
The cast is terrific, with Zendaya playing a character trying to find that beautiful symphony of connection on the court. Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist have easily leveled up their star power as two competitive best friends whose worlds are upended when they meet Zendaya’s Tashi.
Highlighting the tension of each scene is an electrifying score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, making each point feel as vital and chaotic as the glares the trio gives each other across the court. It’s beautifully shot, and Guadagnino draws you into his world with slow-motion glances and extreme close-ups from low angles. You can smell the sweat dripping from their faces as the intensity overflows.
It was so worth the wait!
