Indian defense analysts really needs to update their info. China's WS-10 series has been in production for years and used on many Chinese fighters, WS-15 5th gen engine capable of supersonic cruise has also entered production. In fact, every single fighter in China that's in production right now are equipped with Chinese engines.

I've been reading about the Kaveri engine in newspapers and on the internet since the early 2000s. Its 2025 and we are yet to see it operational. But during this time two perhaps three generations of engineers and bureaucrats who worked on the project have retired from HAL, DRDO, BHEL, BEL, etc and are enjoying their pensions. And every year we are promised to see it inducted on Tejus by the end of the year. This year more engineers and bureaucrats will also retire while they promise to induct Kaveri in the next year.

4 maybe 5 countries have the tech to make jet engine ON THEIR OWN. The latest entrant china have spent over 20B USD on it. We have probably spent half a billion on it. And if you dig deep you can see that kaveri is supposed to be a better design than whatever imported thing we have (except rafale engines). But we don't have a flying test bed to prove it. Unless you invest and make an infrastructure, nothing is going to materialize. BTW India flew a fighter jet before we had an indigenous car engine. Think about that.

China’s leapfrogging is built on three key foundations: 1. Breaking through in advanced engine materials and achieving independent manufacturing of cutting-edge engines-a monumental leap from being unable to produce them to mastering the technology. 2. Constructing the most advanced wind tunnel in the world, showcasing significant progress in aerospace capabilities. 3. Developing the ability to independently manufacture advanced electronics, further solidifying its technological independence.

According to Wikipedia, the development of WS10 originated in the 1980s, using the core engine technology of CFM56, which is the same as the core engine of F110-GE-129IPE in the United States. Combined with the WS6 technology that had already been discontinued in China at that time, the WS10 series aircraft engine was developed. After continuous improvement, the technology only matured in 2012. The thrust of its latest engine WS10G is currently close to that of the US F119, reaching 156 kN. The thrust of WS15 has reached 182 kN, with a thrust to weight ratio of 10.78. Russians will not sell aircraft engine technology.

@@ThePrintIndia Also, another point (last one I promise 😇). You asked External Minister Sir that having a national strategic document for a country will be help all the agencies to have a common vision to work towards. But if that is defined, wouldn't it allow adversaries to take advantage? Can you explain how US or western countries publish this without giving their adversaries advantage? Also, wouldn't that undermine countries benefit taking ability from ad hoc situations? Example Saudi Arabia was with India. Now Pakistan allowed them to mine gold. Now they are making harder work rules for Indians while the Chinese didn't decreased Pakistan's interest rate (because Pakistan crossed the Chinese). At the same time, China is investing in Saudi Arabia CPG / FMCG sector (to improve relations with them post this issue). So how does India navigate within this ever changing landscape? And does China also have a national security strategy document which we can refer?

@@ThePrintIndia Another idea for future (if possible). China and India have the largest military personnel - which complements their population size. It seems China is doing super soldier (brain enhancement etc.) creation with the help of biotechnology. They were already using drugs. Now they are going next level. I heard India is having cyber and space divisions - but on biotechnology and gene enhancement etc are we doing anything defense wise? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmfGmWywqJKcmZIsi=NAA-a4OMRR0p6IPB There are far more examples from China, Germany during WW2 etc. on internet (too much). There are also special units like Ice sniper unit etc. which generally everyone has. But if Covid, the new virus etc is to go by - they are excellent also in biowar it seems. 🤯 🌎 💥 Also, my sympathies are with defense journalists and defense ministry and defense personnel - it seems China is doing things faster than rest of the world could keep up. The last war of humanity will be between Chinese and AI - because others will be beaten pretty fast 🚴三. So we should actually support China as they seem to having best chance against terminators. I believe that one of the major reason India is lagging behind is - * Undue importance on Politocracy and Bureaucracy. * The country must give due importance to the Technocrats. They should be given due respect, freedom of research, sufficient funding, freedom to select their own team and work towards a defined objective. * There is no dearth of talent in the country. If properly used, they will be able to design, develop & produce not one but 10 Aircraft Engines. Just look at the wonders by ISRO. * It is in the interest of National Security that the Politicians and the Bureaucrats takes back seat and Real Technical Experts do their job. Along with that, strengthening Pvt Sector, lateral entry for Technocrats, incentivising best performers is important. The country must achieve the right balance between Politocracy, Bureaucracy, Technocracy & Meritocracy. Right person, with the right resources, with right team should be allowed to do the right job. Regarding a national security policy, We dont need one to be public yet due to the region we are in. We dont need to ape US for everything. The region we are in is very dynamic and frequently changing. For eg., If our National security policy was written in 2020 (Along with DPA) the northern alliance was in control. Now we have a working relationship with the Taliban, Bangladesh was the closed security partner to India till 2023 and now its becoming increasingly Anti India. Nepal and Sri lanka regimes keep getting hot and cold to India. We cannot keep a security policy which will keep changing every year.

People don't realise that india hasn't developed economically to become an advanced manufacturer of jet engines and fighter jets. The Indian economy in relation to our population needs to be at least close to 10 trillion dollars and that should be spread equitably not just to get concerned amongst 5% of the population. A massive support industry needs to develop in the MSME sector so that the parts and components can be manufactured on scale to support the larger manufacturer, our manufacturing has been stagnating around 16-17% from the last 30 years, which requires to be at 30-33%. The reason for that is because the banks are reluctant to give loans to the msme sector. The west on the other hand via the IMF and World Bank forces us to develop the organised and larger corporate sector because the foreign investors only want to invest in a safer sector, so that they can make money from our Stock exchange as their social securities and pension funds are heavily invested in high value stock, if we don't do that then all these Moodies, Goldman Sachs and fitch start dropping our ratings. Then there are problems with resource acquisition for advanced materials and then there is a need for holistic development of the free and quality primary education system which would provide a quality work force to our MSME sector. While we have the top level education which produces a large number of quality Technicians and IT professionals but we can't use them so they work for foreign nations like the United States. There are many other social factors that need to be addressed. We also need an environment of freedom of thought, which is not possible in a society tightly controlled where everyone is scared to speak out their mind, so that ideas can flourish.

India needs to study how China progressed so well despite being under technology denial and sanctions. China reverse engineered all the weapons and equipments bought from USSR and western world then improved on it but indians are unable even to copy a rifle and they tried in INSAS and failed miserably. In the current weakened IAF scenario we should do.. 1. Area denial... make an impregnable air defense . 2. Focus on UAVs and AI to thwart any aggression and commission them in very large quantity to balance squadron shortfall.

Excellent video without any hype. Very well thought out questions and answers. A few of my observations. The video is comprehensive but for completeness (even if already covered) the issue of MRFA delays should have been addressed too though these might have been discussed earlier. If the MRFA procurement proceeded as per the original schedule then we would not be in this predicament today. Coming to the delays of Tejas Mk1A, are the engines the "only" delay or one of the delays? If it is the former, then we should have at least a few Mk1A a/c ready for delivery as HAL itself has some spare engines. If they are 100% ready but for engines, then they could ground a small batch of Mk1 a/c say three, and use these engines to deliver Mk1As which are superior, and then continue this cycling till the situation eases out. Wonder why this was not done! Technically an engine swap should not take a very long time - maybe a couple of weeks. Any answers? Coming to the border dispute with China, there is no point in blaming the Brits or someone else. The Chinese have boundary issues with every country in their neighborhood (other than Pakistan) including Russia. The Seven Dash line is their own creation which is upsetting the whole region. We will have to live with them and contain them. The latter can happen only through our strength.

As far as i know the Kavari engine is a success and works ,it just doesnt meet India standards of power and this was because we didnt know the ingredients of the alloys for the fins in the hottest part of the engine which we need to make the engine more powerful ,But wev have had the ingredients for 2 years now and the engine is now fully made, but just needs testing on a Russian test plane but there is a 9 month waiting time so after 9 months India will have its first real jet engine

Good interaction… more emphasis is required in areas each Whenever Indian Defence is discussed by the “experts” of today, there is one major aspect conveniently avoided could be because of ignorance). Between 1972 and 2007 the only operates / addition to Indian military equipment were the BOFORS and replacement of enameled water bottles by plastic ones. Real efforts to modernize stared only about 10-12 years back. DRDO was not functioning well… Tiger was no metallurgical research (so essential for engines, aircraft’s, guns and ship building) carried out by either DRDO or the private sector…… one can react many reasons from experience) discuss what is to be done now… Root for more and more rye R&D and not just lament… we all know where we are And much is happening now. The Chinese used to always ask why China's engines didn't work. Until China's manufacturing output equaled that of the US and the EU combined, they discovered that China can make anything, so the key is manufacturing capabilities and supply chains. India's manufacturing output accounts for 3% of the world's total, which is only equivalent to China's level in 1990. It lags behind China by more than 30 years. India still has a long way to go.

I tend to agree, even though she was extremely polite and very well informed. What is it with IAF officers that they are so worried about speaking out of turn or really speaking truth to power - perhaps India still is a very deferential country? Every IAF officer must know that the Tejas Mk I is no better than the Gnat or Hunter, which were conceived of in the early 1950's. They would have trouble with an F-86 and certainly an F-104.

30:42 I appreciate the perspective on the Sino-Indian issue. Just imagine if, tomorrow, India decided to relinquish its claims on the disputed region. Where do you think it would prioritize its resources and energy? It could focus on developing its economy. However, wouldn’t this also serve as a deterrent to both China and the USA? China is pursuing a multipolar world but desires a unipolar Asia. How does India fit into this strategy? The USA sees India as a counterbalance to China in Asia, and such a decision would significantly alter that dynamic. Furthermore, how would this decision align with the BJP's hardline strategy?

I’m sorry there are many factual errors. We have made significant upgrades to the AL31F. As far as Safran’s contribution to the Kaveri it has been anything but peripheral. Certainly they have not provided the M88 core, considering the difference between the two engines interns weight and thrust. Furthermore if after the expenditure of 6 billion we cannot carry on an Indian research program in a country of 1.5 billion, let us dismantle the scientific and engineering establishment of the government. Finally, the greatest expense in R&D is incurred due to a lack of existence proof so many approaches are tried. But we are not doing that we know what we are doing has already been done.

There has been a total lack of vision regarding the creation of a right kind of development/ operation platform to produce a Indian fighter aircraft. The 2nd world war had expedited R&D , development and mass production of naval and airborne assets , namely fighter aircraft’s and the jet engines which Europe , US & USSR developed over the years . India never has a clear geo political strategy until only recently and it’s only been the China card which has woken up Indian think tank to realise the last 3-4 decades were just wasted due to lack of a defence philosophy and poor foresight . Please remember that you cannot suddenly jump into Gen 4 or Gen 5 fighter aircraft production because you need to gain your own overall experience when creating and developing the platform which includes the supply chains . Thereafter it’s a R&D process of continual improvement of the platform till you switch over to the next generation which requires a major technological advancement therefore develop significant changes to the production assembly lines and supply chains , material test processes , etc , which enables the a new gen fighter aircraft to designed and create the prototype . It’s this overall development of the entire platform including the supply chain which creates a new generation of fighter air crafts . This production of a new generation aircraft and its production assembly is actually cheaper and takes less time when the compared to development of the previous gen fighter aircraft’s because 50 - 60 % of the aircraft design , material , engine development , supply chain remain the same . This is the reason why the Chinese are now creating Gen 6 prototypes based on their existing Gen 5 platforms ( which they build copying or reverse engineering Gen 4 , Gen 4.5 Russian aircraft’s ) . So it’s a waste of time trying to shell the LCA projects and put in sincere all out effort to develop a decent version of the Kaveri jet engine ( initially use American or French jet engines for Tejas) . We have no time to waste therefore we need to implement realistic timelines on the development of the Kaveri with French assistance for Tejas 2 and meantime persue with R&D , development of supply chains for Gen 5 aircraft that will be borne from Tejas 2 , mark 1, 2 platform . I sincerely hope that our defence planners have had the vision to continue with R&D in developing the Tejas 2 design towards the next Gen aircraft and working towards developing the infrastructure for Gen5 . Unfortunately , I see a tunnel vision and lack of proper leadership with defence policy makers . Had Dr Parikar still been alive we would have been in a much better position .

This individual lacks expertise. China significantly enhanced its WS-10B aircraft engines, replacing all Russian-made engines since 2019. China’s ability to develop sixth-generation aircraft stems from breakthroughs in its cutting-edge WS-15 engine technology. Chinese engines now possess comparable power to Russian engines but are more reliable. However, they still lag behind Western engines. Despite this, they are reliable enough to equip their entire J-10, J-11, J-15, J-16, and J-20 fighter fleets and export to Pakistan.

@ Did you read the news recently? China conducted a test flight of a flying diamond-shaped fighter aircraft without vertical wings. This achievement is a testament to China’s advanced capabilities in developing next-generation engines. If you’re interested, I can also provide a link to an article from a professional take on this news. China has been diligently working on the WS-10B engine since the late 1990s, never giving up on its pursuit. This engine is based on the Russian engine but has been enhanced to meet China’s specific requirements. Notably, the WS-15 engine is not derived from the Russian engine. China has a proven track record of copying, mastering, and then innovating in three distinct steps.

@@lilunchengsmiles that's all media knee jerk reaction. Social media is just articulating things and nothing. China hasn't said anything regarding this. It can be a better version of previous aircraft or it can be demonstrated as a technology version as well. Tailless wings are also part of 5th generation and china stealthy aircraft have reservations that China claims. It can be a marketing strategy as well. Unless the Chinese don't give the details of aircraft we can't say it's a sixth generation aircraft.

Developing secure channels of collaboration with the top engineering schools on specific high technology components may be one way forward. Certifying the security of the process to protect defense secrets and keep doing it, is not a trivial challenge, but worth it. Bharat is moving this way, slowly. Evidence suggests that HAL or DRDO do not have the bandwidth to do it all alone without collaboration. Not a strike against them - it is a big project and needs more hands.

What about the most pressing and relevant points/voices against imports @sourav jha, @annanth? Failure of the air force to set realistic QRs for even some thing as basic as drones (Tapas vs Hermes | unobtanium again| ). I keep hearing buzz words like "manufacturing at scale", "design detail". Well how about asking the armed forces to put money where their mouth is and order domestic products in numbers. Firstly, thank you for your service GC Ajay Ahlawat. Your comments are valued and appreciated, though not your opinion of ‘social media’ posters. However ignorant or inappropriate they may appear; these are the views of the nations interested parties. Secondly, Dr. Rao referenced misogyny & the belittling of the female point of view by paternalistic parties. This is unacceptable. During my career, it was my experience that women were usually the ones who delivered results in a timely manner and importantly were usually the first to point out the potential failure of a plan or sub plan. Any society that excludes them or promotes their exclusion from a nation’s welfare (education, health, design & production etc.) is doomed to inertia or worse. Within a short time after independence in the field of aviation India achieved much (Marut). It already identified that the engine used in the Marut was underpowered. None-the-less the airplane performed admirably perhaps not to specs, but okay. Then very little happened in this field until the 1980’s. A new aircraft was designed (Tejas) and flew 16 years later; I believe to try and prevent the problems that arose with the Marut a generation earlier, work was started on a home-grown engine (Kaveri). Some forty years later, this engine is still to power a Tejas, however I believe it has been used (successfully) in drones. This suggests that Kaveri is neither a success nor a failure. This suggests that they are fundamentally able to comply with the some of the rigours demanded by research, design & development, but not in others; such as timeliness. Never the less, don't give up. Someone told me that India is only good at ‘cookie-cutter’ production (CKD kits) but not actually able to make a product ‘end to end’. I disagree. They are! However what appears lacking in the equation is timeliness. Modern India has been around for some time now. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Thank you for the good discussion.

Ah, India, where defense debates are full of wishful thinking and contradictions! An air force guy now claims that China is struggling to create a powerful engine, despite its collaboration with Russia. Struggling, you say? Funny, because Pakistan, with a no-compromise attitude on defense, has been using Chinese engines in its JF-17 Thunder-and it seems to be working just fine. When Pakistan Air Force decides on equipment, it’s not about what’s available; it’s about what’s the best. The beauty of jet engines! Let’s talk about Pratt & Whitney, the absolute pinnacle of aviation engineering. When the U.S. Air Force developed the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II, they didn’t just pick any engine off the shelf. They went straight to Pratt & Whitney, because when you’re building the best fighter jets in the world, you use the best engines. It’s not a coincidence that these stealth jets rely on the P&W F119 and F135 engines, which deliver unmatched performance, reliability, and thrust. Now, let’s look at Pakistan, a country that has always maintained one of the most credible air forces in the world. When Pakistan procured the F-16 Fighting Falcons, they had a choice, they could’ve opted for GE engines, which were available and respectable. But the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) insisted on Pratt & Whitney engines, knowing that only the best would suffice for their fleet. Why? Because the PAF has a reputation to uphold-one that even legendary Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier and a former U.S. Air Force officer, recognized. Let’s rewind to Chuck Yeager’s time in Pakistan in the 1970s. As part of a U.S. military assistance program, Yeager observed the PAF up close and famously declared that the Pakistan Air Force was "better than the Top Gun pilots" he had seen back home. Yes, you read that right-better than Top Gun, the elite U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School. Yeager was so impressed by the skill, discipline, and precision of PAF pilots that he openly admitted their training and operational capability were second to none. This reputation wasn’t built on shortcuts or settling for “good enough.” The PAF has always been about maintaining excellence, whether in its pilots or its equipment. Even today, the JF-17 Thunder, developed in collaboration with China, uses carefully chosen engines that meet the high standards the PAF is known for. And now, with Project Azm, Pakistan is moving toward 5th-gen and even 6th-gen aircraft, ensuring its air force remains at the cutting edge of aviation technology. Contrast this with those who claim China struggles with engines. Sure, criticize China’s engines, but China's WS-15 engines, but let’s not ignore the fact that China is building 160 kN thrust engines for its 5th-gen stealth fighters-a step ahead of many. And let’s face it: if Pakistan, with its no-compromise standards, is using Chinese engines, that speaks volumes about their quality and reliability. So, here’s the real question: Why settle for mediocrity when others are aiming for the best? The PAF, with its Pratt & Whitney-powered F-16s, Chinese-engine JF-17s, and upcoming advanced projects, shows what it means to combine skill with strategic choices. Maybe instead of dismissing others’ achievements, it’s time to reflect on why some nations still rely on imported aircraft while calling themselves “regional powers.” In the end, there’s a difference between talking about greatness and actually achieving it. Pakistan’s air force doesn’t just fly-it soars, setting standards others can only dream of reaching. And when even Chuck Yeager ranks your air force above Top Gun, well, that’s not just credibility-it’s excellence.

For the Equipments that we manufacture, we are so slow for example a Naval Vessel like Destroyer or a Submarine compared to China. This topic should have been tackled in this discussion. How can we speed up our defence production and inductions

When it comes to drones , like the fighter aircraft , India is decades behind China, US , Israel . If you have travelled to China and if you have entered any electronic shop , amoungst the mobile phones and accessories , you will be amazed on the variety of drones available . There are easily a range of 50-60 drones of different size , design and capability available to the common man at reasonable prices to the common man …. Can you then imagine what they have in store for supporting their defence

The problem with Swasti is she tries to reinterpret what Mr. Ahlawat is saying and frequently interjects him. Good interviewers trust the audience to form their own conclusions. However, China is far ahead in engine development. This discussion is very powerful however and Mr. Ahlawat is wise to steer clear of any blame game. Strategy is the way that you communicate intent and resource allocation priorities to all departments - armed forces, DRDO, HAL etc. The current situation is not because the strategy is secret. It is because it is not there. A good idea has been floating that may conserve resources - converge AMCA, TEDBF into one project. Also let's face it, Tejas Mk1A would have been great 15 years ago. However, that minimum equivalent today is Tejas MK-2 - with a more powerful engine, range, armament and avionics. AMCA will take another ten years at least for production. We need to be an "import Bahadur" and look at options today to counter JF-35 and equivallent.

As a Chinese, 1. India does not need to focus China, because China and India have barely no relationship. We are in parallel. 2. India's military industry falls behind not since 6th Gen fighter in 2024, but during the 2nd Gen fighter in 1970s. Both China and India got Mig-21 in around 1962. China started to export J-7( Chinese version of Mig-21) since late 1970s, totally, exported up to 1700 J-7. How about India? As far as I know, India exports no Mig-21(Indian version) at all. So does J-16(Chinese version of Su-30). China now has its own Su-30 rather than simply CKD. Does India has its own version of Su-30? 3. India's weapon development looks like a face job. India's decision is not based on requirement, but to follow other nations, including but not limited to China. It is like India needs something because others nations do, rather than because India needs it. 4. There is no way for China to cool down border issue. It is not up to China, but because India's border policy enables China to make use of it to slow down India's development. Given that India spent much union budgets on border + if China keeps border tension => India needs to spend more and more money on border rather than economy development => India will be trapped by slowing down economy. It is what China want to achieve eventually.

Who's focusing on China ? We don't look to China for any inspiration nor do we consider Chinese technology something to be emulated. The only advantage is its cheap. The MiG-21 were for our domestic usage. China did what it does best - copied designs & made the J-7 after nearly 3 decades of tinkering around selling it to countries neither the then USSR or the USA or UK or France sold to. Countries that didn't have much to spend & tolerated junk. Just like the J-20 is copied from the F-22 & the J-35 is a copy of the F-35 . Lol. Right now the unemployment scene in China for the age group between 21-40 is 35% & rising. The real estate sector has crashed. The TFR of China is falling rapidly . Soon you will have more people over 60 than under 20. The only country whose economy is going to slow down is China. This is the reason MSS ought to select Gaokao pass candidates to serve as Wu Maos not Gaokao fail candidates like you

The lady said, even Israel does not have a engine technology!! LOL .. I dont know how people are so misinformed. Israel could be a benchmark for India but for the rest of the world, its a secondary source to gain American techs. Israel never had any engine programme neither it has its own fighter. A lot of countries can manufacture excellent engine. She did not know that Japan is very good at it even though they dont export. Germany UK USA France Russia Japan China all can manufacture engine for 5th generation aircraft with enough thrust for super cruise. Chinese engine do have shorter life span but they are catching up.

Scnemca support to Kaveri early stage is being over blown. We had a bad experience with their engagement and certainly didnt do TOT on a lot of key technology. The Kaveri engine to what ever KN power we did was entirely India's own. If done some more R&D it can be better than the WS engines.
