In this short, Lord Sumption describes issues of activism in modern society and the threats to democracy.
Lord Jonathan Sumption is a celebrated historian, barrister, and emeritus judge of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. After teaching and researching in medieval history at Oxford University, he pursued an astonishingly successful legal career which resulted in his appointment to the Supreme Court. While practising as a lawyer, Sumption wrote celebrated works of medieval history, most notably four volumes of a planned five-volume history of the Hundred Years’ War.
Sumption has weighed into public debate over many years, most recently regarding COVID policies in the UK and the demonisation of Western history, particularly since the BLM protests and riots in 2020. His most recent books are Trials of the State: Law and the Decline of Politics and Law in a Time of Crisis.

If representative democracy still exited in the western world, perhaps we could be content. However our representatives (aka politicians) no longer fulfil their side of the understanding of the word. Instead they bow down for the likes of the world economic forum ( self appointed!) and the UN . The world vision of these know alls is far removed from the hopes and desires of the common man.

What else could be expected from the days of a majority generation too long at the controls of society's institutions? Inflicted with #BabyDoomerism; as if by an "invisible mind" its "Me first!" mentality enables a culture of selfish unaccountability and greedy hoarding; "Baby Doomer" ideologues made an impossible age for their children, and then often blame the kids for the youths' circumstances, but didn't raise them with civics to be prepared to self govern effectively.

Intensity of emotion that is proportionate and real is sometimes disregarded as sub standard to words in communication. For those who trully feel seriously aggrieved or who have been traumatised it may be representative of immense pain. Causing immense pain is on the other hand a non viable option.

Western democratic system is in decline. You can’t be enriched by politics unless you’re corrupt. This applies to the systems themselves.
