Tokays are territorial but once out of the enclosure, they can be pretty chill as long as you move fluid and respectfully. Day geckos teleport and are freaking crazy. One second you think you're good, then random backflip to a one hand catch onto something and gone around a corner. I'd much rather be catching my Tokay than my day gecko anytime.

My Tokay is honestly a sweetheart! She has never bitten, never defensively postures and I can easily sit and watch tv with her for hours hanging out on my arm or lap. My first gecko and I love her.

I've been considering a leachie but I had a tokay and the thought of a giant version of that angry sucker scares me.
@reptiliangarden4 жыл бұрын
Aspen Paine Not all of them are like that, but there is a chance! 😅 I think your odds are better if you get a baby and handle it into adulthood so that it can get used to you and handling. If you decide to breed that can trigger a new attitude too!
@shinyscales13414 жыл бұрын
Aspen Paine my leachie (16 months old now) is very tame when out the cage doesn’t run and we have an indoor free roam enclosure, I only put him in there when I’m there, but he is very cage aggressive I don’t even think you can bypass that if you buy them from baby’s! I keep mine in a 24x18x24 but if he gets much bigger I will upgrade him into a 36x18x36 so be prepared for a big cage
@AlienX2813 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know tokays are generally mean but most leachies are tame, it really just comes down to buying a captive bred one and not wild caught

I briefly had a Tokay gecko when I was ten years old, back in the early 90s. The manager of the pet store where I got her told me I didn't want her because they're not easy to handle. He took her out to show me; she latched onto his hand and he was bleeding. That just made me want her more. Unfortunately we (my parents and I) were clueless about husbandry, and she was most likely wild-caught, so she didn't last very long. (My parents also bought a lined gecko for my brother and put him in the same cage with the Tokay, oof! I'm so glad the information on how to properly care for these animals is so much more readily available now!) Some day in the future I would like to get a Tokay, when I have the time and energy for the project of taming a dragon. Even though it's not easy, I can see how it's extremely rewarding.

This is a wonderful discussion to have about reptile keeping in general. I’m glad you posted this! Your videos are always so useful! One of the neatest things about reptiles is their diversity. But what comes with species diversity is a large diversity in husbandry requirements AND personality traits. Rather than having an idealistic expectation of what you WANT an animal to be, it’s healthier to practice acceptance of what a particular animal truly is. People tend to want the most attractive/interesting/unique specimen, but ALSO want them to be puppy dog tame. That combination doesn’t always occur. My old Argus Monitor, for example.... She was probably one of the coolest animals I’ve ever kept in my life! And I would’ve LOVED to be able to show her off by parading around the streets with her on my shoulder. But she simply wasn’t that type of animal. And if I had ever attempted to force that on her, it would’ve been stressful for the both of us. And she likely would’ve torn my face to pieces😂. I used to tell people that we had a “healthy agreement” with each other’s boundaries, which was very true. Another example is my current situation, where I have 19 tarantulas. And I don’t handle a single one. Why? Because these animals don’t receive any benefit from handling. They are incredibly fragile, and are incapable of forming emotional bonds with people. They don’t even bond with each OTHER. In fact, they’ll eat each other if given the chance. Handling is nothing but stressful for a spider, and would be selfish of me to force that on them. Tricia, I absolutely love your channel! You have such great ideas about content that people can actually use. You are awesome at what you do!

Hi Tricia, my 3-4 month old crested gecko is really afraid of me so I’ve been trying to handle him more often and the other day i tried taking him out (holding him over a large container just in case) but he was moving really fast and jumped off my arm and ran to the other side of the room within 1 or 2 seconds. I almost lost him and although when I’ve held him previously he was fast, that was just unmanageable. Any advice?
@reptiliangarden4 жыл бұрын
Charlotte Stickland Some people say to continue handling, but whenever I had a gecko like this I would just keep handling to a minimum and keep it as more of an observational animal to avoid stress.

The scientific names are incorrect in the way you wrote them. The scientific name is comprised of two words in which the first is the genera name, which first letter is always a capital letter, and the second word is the species name, which first letter is always NOT a capital letter. This an important detail if you aspire your channel to be accurate enough to be taken seriously. Furthermore, geckos are not supposed to be handled, since it's not in their nature ( as with all reptiles and amphibians ). If anyone wishes something to grab on all the time, try something else, instead of making animals suffer for human ignorance. On the other hand, if one is willing to respect his or her pet and, instead, learn and be amazed with its behaviour, one should be humble enough to willingly be prepared to do research as much as possible an bear in mind the differences between herps and humans and, therefore, do whatever it takes to make them healthy and happy. My regards.
