I used to have a 13" long wild caught Tokay. I trained it to the point where literally anyone could put their hand in her enclosure, and she would jump to your hand, run up your arm, and rest on your shoulder. I bled A LOT to tame her to that point, but easily my favorite pet ever. She got so used to people that, after my first 2 months with her, she never even struck a defensive pose again. She lived 8 years after I got her.
@gabriellesimone2546 Жыл бұрын
How did you train here
@MoneyShot127 Жыл бұрын
@Gabrielle Simone i would pick her up and hold her 2-3 times a day. Generally she would bite and let go and try to bolt. I started holding her open palm with one of her rear leg pinned between my thumb and hand, just tight enough that she couldn't bolt. After a while she realized that I wasn't hurting her. When she finally stopped biting all-together it was because I would pet her under the chin and on top of her head while holding her. If she opened her mouth to bite I'd put my pointer finger close to her mouth. If she bit I'd put my thumb on top of her snout and apply just enough pressure that she couldn't let go. The last time she bit me she got me really good and I was bleeding. After two to three minutes she tried to let go and couldn't. I held on for another two to three minutes. After that she would occasionally his and bluff a bite but never do it, and finally stopped even bluffing a bit. After she stopped biting she quickly got to the point where she would rush to my hand when I opened the cage, climbed onto my hand, run up my shoulder, and perch there for very extended periods of time. It took me bleeding, she was viscious, but it was totally worth it. I've never had another reptile that would react to handling like her, and seamingly enjoy being near me.

I used to work at a pet store, and we sold tokay geckos, and I witnessed the strength of a juvenile's bite force firsthand. One of my co-workers was feeding them, and one tried to jump out of its enclosure. He caught it, but, it latched down right in the crease between his thumb and pointer finger. The gecko bit so hard, it tore a chunk of his skin off, resulting in needing 3 stitches, and it took 3 of us to get his jaw open to get him off of my co-worker. The gecko would not let go, and the thrashing around of his head is what resulted in the tearing oft the flesh. But, they are very beautiful animals.

I think this video was my first real introduction to tokay geckos, I first saw it when it came out and didn’t really think much of it but then earlier this year when i was in the market for a new reptile i saw it again and something really drew me to tokays. When i got my girl in april (as a wild caught adult) i was fully expecting an aggressive monster that could only be a display animal, and at first she was. I could barely walk in the room without her freaking out at me, But I realized pretty soon that it wasn’t aggression that was making her act like that, it was fear. I ended up doing a lot of research on how people tame and work with monitors (there aren’t good resources on tokay taming and there’s just no way you can treat them like a crested gecko and expect it to work) and started working with her every day, trying to make sure she knows I’m not a threat. She went from being terrified and angry and hiding from me constantly to actively coming out and waiting for me at feeding time and taking bugs from the tongs I’m holding without any fear. She hasn’t done anything “aggressive” in several months (except getting a little too excited and trying to bite the water coming out of the spray bottle a few times lol) and I’ve never been bitten by her. I know every animal is different and maybe she’s just different than other tokays but respecting an animal’s boundaries does a lot. I don’t try to touch her, I avoid direct eye contact, i keep myself lower than her when I’m near the tank so she has the high ground, and it’s a bit annoying sometimes but if that’s what it takes for her to be happy then so be it. I think my tokay gecko is the best pet reptile for me. She’s like a monitor in the body of a gecko, and she hunts crickets like something from jurassic park. I don’t think she likes me all that much, I’m kind of like an overbearing father she tolerates because I have food, but there’s nothing wrong with that lmao. Thank you Clint for being the person to introduce me to the species, love your videos :).

My Tokay was definitely my favourite animal I've ever owned...when I bought it, it was because I felt so sorry for it...it was super skinny and dark black...I asked what the deal was and the guy working at the pet store said it had gotten lose in the store and no one could capture it for several months. I got it a great big enclosure, and took super care of him...and he got HUGE...I never did handle him, I just let him have his space in a heavily planted aquarium. He'd call so loudly every night! And he ended up being the most beautiful blue and red spots. But I had to give him up due to living arrangements...and I've wanted another one ever since...only this time I'd like to get a younger male and handle it / tame it. That one I had measured nearly 14" long when I had to get rid of him...wonder how big he is now...

i feel lucky when i see how people handle their tokay geckos because mine is very calm and nice compared to all others i’ve seen. if i put my hand in her cage, and gently “boop” her with a marker, she’ll walk onto my hand. then she’ll let me grab her and hold her, no even barking at me. she use to bite and be very aggressive like the one in the video when i got her (from a friend who no longer wanted her since she was so untamed) i held her any chance i got and after about 5 months she was tame and the way she is now. long story short, i believe you can tame tokay geckos if you handle them every day. even just a few minutes. but if you go too long not handling them, they’ll be aggressive again. 👍🏻

Hey Clint! A male tokay gecko will only say "TO-KAY!" when he wants to mate or to defend his territory vocally from other encroaching geckos. The mating season is in the spring for the most part (they can and will breed outside of it). You can trigger "mating season" in captivity by providing more food, longer lighting hours, more frequent misting and raising the temperature slightly.

One night I went for a walk and found a pile of dead termite queens under a lamp that was left on, and there was a tokay gecko there just helping itself to the unlimited food supply. It had gotten so large and fat that it couldn't climb walls anymore, and could hardly walk with how big it had gotten.

I just wanted to drop by and say thank you for this video. I was binging your videos by chance some time ago and happened upon this one and I found the perfect pet reptile for me. Tokays have so much character and I instantly fell in love with their feisty character. I have a long way to go in shaping our friendship, but I'm absolutely ecstatic to have my tokays in my life. Thank you for your amazing videos!

I found my tokay in a petco that had never been bought after almost 2 years. She just barked and snapped at everything. I bought her because I thought her bark was adorably stupid. I decided I wanted to tame her. I had to use welding gloves and dunk her in water when she wouldn't let go on her own. After about a year, she just decided that I wasn't worth the effort anymore and completely transformed overnight into a total sweetie. She never ever even snapped at me or anyone else again in her life, never ran away, just decided to settle down and be chill and sweet and only ever loosed that derpy bark when she got startled or particularly bored. She lived a good 6 years on top of her 2 at petco. She was like a big softbearded. I miss her, especially knowing that I'll probably never find another one like her. I had people offering me several thousand dollars for her.

I got my first tokay when I was 23 ish. Adopted him as an adult, for $60. One of the most beautiful animals I have ever had. His mating call was the best. I held him a few times...he managed to lock on my finger for 45 minutes and had to submerge him under water. I named him creature and he was an amazing pet. Definitely for moderate to experienced people.

I have been waiting so long to see you do a video about tokays!! I got super lucky with my tokay Pearl. She's very handlable and relaxed, and at night when she wakes up she gets very energetic and if I open the doors she will come leap out onto my shirt or arm, once my face! (probably looking to make a break for it or steal my valuables and run).

A tokay has got to be one of the greatest lizards ever. They know exactly when you are going to feed them and sit and wait where you drop the food to the day and hour. Incredible to watch, absolutely gorgeous, and as absolutely mean as any animal that ever crawled on this earth. I love when they are hunting when you are trying to sleep, and you can hear it barking in the middle of the night. I think you are wrong saying they are scared of us. They don't try to run away, they don't hide, and I have seen one chase a grown man. Just an absolutely awesome pet that you don't want to handle.

Tokay are the best. They love and care for their babies and they are filled with a fierce attitude. My favorite of them all.

Mine was a rescue being kept in a car as a car alarm. I got her at 5 months and at 13 months she was 10 inches and perfectly evil. Actively hunting, growing and trying to eat thru to my sternum. Wouldn't change her attitude a bit.

They protect their mates and they will raise their young up to around 6 months before they chase them away.

I love how every episode of this show corresponds exactly with my experience handling reptiles as a child. A friend of mine had a tokay growing up, and it was pure evil. I was like, why? I briefly owned an iguana. It was very mean. And garter snakes were always a gem! My experience, exactly.

@@misteriguana2748Welll it was just a joke. I live in Czech republic and you have little to no chance to se any reptile around disk and we have low reptilian diversity overall. The most dangerous reptile around here is the common viper. And we don't have any gecko, python, skink and monitor species around.

Clint, I recently moved into a new apartment (first floor of a brownstone) and discovered that there is a man breeding reptiles in my basement. What tipped me off was hearing the “tokay” sound while I did laundry at night. So thank you very much for this video lol!

Cats are pretty predictable to me. Before they try to bite you, they'll give off a bunch of signals. It's to the point where I can predict almost to the second when a cat will attack.

My tokay gecko is honestly one of my favorite reptiles I’ve ever owned. Once you know they are a display animal that has one of the best feeding responses in the world you can appreciate their amazingness. I have had mine for over 6 years now and he was already adult size when I got him :)
