I just watched your series of videos on threading and chambering a barrel. That's basically the same way I learned to do it from Bob Dunlap at the lassen gunsmithing School in Northern California about 38 years ago. We were also taught how to use the floating reamer fixture. When I set my Gunsmithing shop up in the late 80s, I was able to acquire a used 12 by 36 lathe. The bed length was on the short side for running the floating system, so I usually cut the chamber with the center on the tailstock just as you did. I haven't cut a chamber now in about two years, but I'm hoping to have my new shop set up this fall and to be making chips again. Thank you for your videos, I definitely enjoyed them.

Good to hear from someone who actually knows how to do this. I get a lot of comments that is is not possible, safe or ??? take your pick of lame comments by those who where taught the long and hard way. Best wishes for you in your new shop! Thanks for watching.

@TheRealGunsmith I have been around firearms since I was very little. I made my first money doing gunsmithing in 1982 for a small local shop in Cocoa Beach. In 1985, I started at Lassen on the three year program, and the following summer, I started working for a large gunshop. Gunsmithing never paid as well as construction down here in the south, so I have spent much of my life working in the construction trades and doing the gunsmithing on the side. I'm almost 60 now, and I'm looking to transition more to the firearms world and away from the heavy construction, which is why I'm setting up a new shop. I'm a firm believer that no matter how long I've been doing something, there is always a chance to learn something new, so I will definitely be watching your videos! I hope we have a chance to meet one day. Thank you, R. A. Thomson

@@floridagunrat1625 I agree, there is always something new to learn every day, and at 73 I do learn everyday. In my shop or out, there is so much to learn and enjoy. Best wishes.

Thank you Randy for taking videos of your processes and procedures in chambering a barrel blank. Do you prefer a buttoned or a cut rifling in a blank?

Button rifled and Hart rifle barrels are the BEST, there are none better. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for your professional, expert endorsement of Hart Barrels. I don't have a Hart but I do have several buttoned, min spec barrels and most are very accurate.

This is cool and enjoy learning from your videos. Since I’ve heard not all bores are drilled perfectly straight even from top barrel manufacturers and compound machining tolerances add up, do you time the bore alignment at the muzzle to 12 or 6 o’clock ? Doesn’t have to be timed but is one step closer to perfection on a non-perfect situation. I wonder if the so called mystical “hummer barrel” bores are perfectly straight leading up to and leaving the crown
@TheRealGunsmith
@TheRealGunsmith Жыл бұрын
There are many areas taken into account with a "hummer" barrel. But it would be much more technical and for only the very experienced for it to addressed to, so not addressed in this series. Thanks for watching.

I've got good experience as a machinist, and as a gun assembler. I only know the hand methods on manual machines. I really hope to be able to get an FFL and slowly transition to be a full gun builder. My machine experience is getting old, it's been a while. So I want to get moving on this to do for the rest of my life.

I've looked through all your videos and have great respect for your knowledge. I've listened to your advice on caliber , velocity, energy, etc. Unfortunately, my favorite rifle is a 1976 Ruger M77 7x57 , it doesn't seem to meet the velocity requirements you've stated. Could you please do a discussion on the caliber, bullets, and powder needed to push this caliber to peak performance. I understand you can not give load data but at least the proper powder and bullet selection would be greatly appreciated. Like I said, it is my favorite rifle and caliber. I don't have the means to change right now, but I can reload for it. Thank you so very much. Thank you for all of your years of experience and knowledge that you share with us. Let me add I live in the southeast and I can not see where I would ever be in a situation to shoot past 300 yds.

Hey Randy! Quick question. In an 8-minute commercial chambering job, does the reamer heat to the point where expansion affects the job? Happy Easter to you and Cathy. TD
@TheRealGunsmith

Thank you and pray you and yours were blessed at Easter and always! It is run under coolant, heat is not a factor. It is the lower precision that comes into play. Thanks for watching.
