It's just my opinion here, but I find that you don't necessarily need a rifle that shoots under 1 MOA for hunting. When I was younger I was under the impression that if you're going to shoot longer distances you have to start with a rifle that shoots at least under 1 MOA, which sure helps. I've built a few long range rigs with factory rifles and have shot them extensively at targets out to 800 yards. I used a model 70 coyote 25 wssm for a long range build, which is at best a 1.25 MOA rifle (3 shots at 100 yards). This rifle really impressed at longer distances and at 100 yards it wasn't impressive at all. I am able to shoot an 8 inch balloon just about every time out to 725 yards without missing. For me this went against all conventional wisdom. But I guess once the rifle is sighted in, shot to shot accuracy matters less than I previously thought. Rarely do you get second shot in a hunting situation. My furthest kill with that rifle is about 445 yards, and that elk left it's feet immediately.

Hey, thinking of rebarreling my ruger 77 hawkeye to 17-06 improved. Thoughts? 😜 jk, gonna keep it 270. in reality, i really appreciate your youtube channel. Too many youngins doing sponsored product reviews or playing with their new toys and not enough people sharing their years of experience. Nowhere else have i found someone reaming a barrel by hand or talking about primer selection. Cant budget it yet but id love to have my hawkeye done up by you one day. Quick question, how do you feel about the new models of hawkeye vs model 70, being different takes on the mauser action, and how do you feel about the mark v action compared to the other two being a renowned but very different action? Edit: id really love to get into gunsmithing one day, but cant fit classes into my life as of now. Part of what I really like about this channel, as its a good start.

There is a good reason why a couple series of bullets have been around forever and will be around forever, despite maybe being expensive or less than popular. Swift A frame and scirocco II, nosler partitions, spear hot core and grand slam and their once trophybonded bear claws ,barnes triple shock . Sierra game kings . All require understanding of their design purpose ,but do what they do amazingly well for their intended purposes /ranges. Many of the soft tipped bullets have two niche situations in mind. Small cartridges with low velocity like 7.62x39,.300 blk, .338 spectre, 6.8 spc,6.5 Grendel, and other intermediate cartridges OR extreme long range hunting of 600 yards + . B.c. does take consideration for extended distances because a high b.c. bullet retains inertia better which translates to more energy on target. However if it's not balanced with high sectional density bullet weight and bullet construction for the job at hand , it's cruel to use for anything but paper Targets or plinking. As he says , it's a merchandising trick to rely on that one measurement alone. A 0.500 g1 b.c. is enough to reach 1000 yards. B.c. changes with velocity. Sectional density does not... mass/weight and construction doesn't either. So learn to identify your needs and let them be met by all considerations of the bullet.

I’m considering on getting a 7mm Weatherby magnum. What are your thoughts on this cartridge?
@TrickShot93 күн бұрын
At that rate, with a 6.5-300 wby youd be 25% through the life of the barrel by the time its broken in 🤣

Great video thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m currently having a rifle build for a 8mm mouser. An old gunsmith is doing it and I’m helping with some of the work.Using the original action, 24” SS # 4 barrel in 30-06, Timney adjustable trigger with a muzzle brake .This is strictly a hunting rifle so it will out last me. My son will get it when I can’t hunt anymore. This is the first and probably last custom rifle I’ve ever owned.

7mm rem mag is a good cartridge, but theres irony in wanting an effective elk caliber, so you take a 338 win mag, probably the best elk cartridge there is, and neck it down significantly. 😂

A lotta years ago, I read about this measurement, but the recommendation was to measure the expansion of a new, factory load and try not to exceed that expansion. This doesn't help me much as I seldom fire factory ammo, sometimes because it is no longer produced. My actual question is whether the 0.0005" limit applies to each firing or first firings, only. Once a case has been fired three or four times, does a 0.0005" incremental head expansion mean the same thing as it would on first firing? Or, does arriving at 0.0005" growth from new indicate max pressure has finally been reached? I bought a blade mic for taking this measurement.

Randy I have a question. I am getting into reloading for myself. Have had others reload my ammo for me in past. Does this method need to be done on new brass, full length resized brass or will it also work on a fire formed piece of brass if I wish to just neck resize? I plan to do my loads from factory fired brass.

I agree with what you're saying. And if you already have a 270 caliber rifle, then there's little advantage, if any, to buy a 6.8 western. But I didn't already have one and was looking to buy one last year. The reason i decided to buy a 6.8 western was that it met more of my criteria than the other .277 caliber cartridges. Namely: Short action, mild recoil, fast twist barrel so i can stabilize HEAVIER .277 bullets. (BC be damned!) I hunt with Barnes bullets and i wanted to be able to use the 155gr LRX. These things make the 6.8 western more versatile for my needs. Also, I couldn't agree with you more about these flimsy high BC bullets for hunting. The ELDXs are JUNK!

So I absolutely like this design for replacement barrel setup. I would love this system in a two barrel at least. For me two possible smaller calibers would be either 25-06 Ackley improved or 280 Ackley improved. The second barrel for me would have to be 35 Whelen Ackley Improved. The biggest mistake I've ever made is selling my Whelen Ackley Improved. My issue is on my retirement budget would take me a year to year n a half to pay for one. That's knowing I don't need a fancy grade. Mountain man

My question is: 243 winchester, Bergara B14 Load: 100gr / 6.5g or 105gr /6.8g I need a better understanding about that cartridge and 270 winchester aswell. People keep telling me don't get those calibers they aren't accurate and the barrells burn out way too quick. And I've been told by people who do a lot of sighting in for other people and generally are gun sellers. I'd maybe shoot the rifle 10-20x per year anyways.
