Love this Michael. I love how it’s 2/3 sky. Love the clouds. And I am enjoying the darkness of the waves and the brightness of the white water in the light. And the white water in shadow. You have a great eye. Keep up the great work and stay happy and healthy. Merry Christmas!

Very nice! I am always impressed by your control of the values, not to mention resisting the temptation to paint the light as it changed. And boy did it change. This is a real lesson in committing to an idea and sticking to it. Very peaceful to watch as well with the crashing of the surf. We are bogged down with the beginnings of winter here in the NE.

What a sky. I often mix a little turquoise to make my lighter skies. I like these mixes of yours, but I rarely go for either of my Thalo tubes because of the intensity of the colors, but I really like that greener tone where that yellow light takes charge. Love the picture. The clouds got top billing but I like those waves rolling ashore

Thanks Brandon! Phthalo can be a challenge to control in smaller quantities but I love the tinting power. What do you use to mix turquoise?

Michael, the painting from inception to completion is like a “” novel of stories written in layered images “” , 1:09 look left of the heavy line, in the sea, foreground center up. See the closed lashes, a touch of eye shadow on the lid, above that a “ sharp angled eyebrow penciled in, two inches above your brush tip see a painted outline of a mouth. Okay next at 1:13 see your sketch, perfectly centered , and just the right distance . The sketch is a masterpiece of images upon layers of images. Center left , edge of canvas, the right eye and lashes, move to your right see her left eye and lashes, below see a full closed mouth, where it should be, either Marilyn Monroe, or a sister of Gena Davis. Easily five different faces , I’m amazed. This is just the beginning too. 1:36 first of a series of “ palette images “ , all interesting, and imagined too I’m sure. Angled wave shadows, I seen, imagined , an eyeliner brush, gloss black, ever so thin, in the, below the upper edge of the wave curl shadow. At 3:43 - 3:45 your center screen, perfect distance. Battle Scene Strewn Sky. Silhouettes just above the horizon outlined in the clouds. They are separated, in the center, where they clash, two armies all of myths and mythology. The large shapes, spontaneous in nature you speak of. The “” Blue Defining Sky “” you tell us of, your excitement in the tone of your voice is infectious. The random patterns feel like holograms to me. Michael, put this one in the “” Best Video and Best Beautiful Painting “” folder. ( many hours in watching a 12 minute video ) 🌟❤️

Another great video and painting. The ambient light on your painting kept changing. Do you have any strategies about working under those conditions particularly with keeping your values under control. Thanks.
@chamberlainpaintings2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew! The only advice I have is to paint outdoors as much as possible. It's forced me to be more flexible in my approach to the subject matter. As I've mentioned in my videos, I use the scenery as "raw materials" for a painting. I try to incorporate the elements that interest me and structure them using compositional ideas inspired by the scene. Hope that makes sense. As for values, I try to be very conscious of the lightest light and the darkest dark in the scene and use those to key my values.
@andrewrea27992 жыл бұрын
@@chamberlainpaintings thanks, but I was referring to the fact that the painting and your palette kept going in and out of the shade from the cloud cover so the perception of the values would keep changing. Just wondering if you had tricks in mind or you just deal with it.

Loved the video! Have you ever considered using masking tape for the horizon by measuring w your brush up both sides the same height to make a mark on the edges? Make your horizon line in paint and remove tape. ( I carry masking tape in my plain air kit so this may be something you don’t want to add, but just a thought..,)
@chamberlainpaintings2 жыл бұрын
I've measured down with my brush but I've never tried tape. I usually like making a few strong, clean brushstrokes at the end so tape wouldn't work since there's already paint on the panel. I sometimes use another panel as a straight edge, if I've got one in my wet panel carrier. Thanks for the suggestion!
