Chameleon Exposed! Mortal Kombat's Most Mysterious Character

In this video I go digging into the story behind the most mysterious MK character of all time - Chameleon!
Traditionally, when talking about any character or story element of MK on this channel, we explore every nook and cranny of the MK universe. Well, that's a little hard to do for Chameleon since he has never appeared in any movies, TV shows, cartoons, comics, etc. He is one of the few whose appearances have been strictly limited to the games. And even within the games, information on him his scarce. He has never appeared in any of the missions in Konquest Mode from the 3D era, nor has he appeared in Story Mode in the NetherRealm Studios era. So information on him is pretty limited.
In the quest to find out as much as possible, I also managed to get a Flawless Victory against Shao Kahn. Yeah, that's staying in there.
We'll crack open a Pro Action Replay or 2 in the quest to find out all we can about Chameleon.
Finally, after seeing an ever-so-brief mention of him in MKX, we'll go straight to the source - co-creator and story writer for the games, John Tobias himself!

So I know its been years since this was uploaded but I wanna add my 2 cents in regards to the actual character. Chameleon is all the secret ninja characters. Let me explain. Reptile in mk1 has Scorpion & Subs moves (which im pretty sure is mentioned in this video) but this continues through mk2. Noob and Smoke also did not have their own moves at first (ermac and rain did in mk3, from what I recall). So I'm saying that in universe, those Noob and Smoke sightings are actually Chameleon sightings, Noob & Smoke are in mk2 but they are not fought by anyone. Why is Chameleon posing as them, why is he still using Scorpions moves and not the moves of the character's hes impersonating? Its impossible to know for sure but its more food for thought.

I wish that this would get confirmed. in the first mortal kombat tournament there is a ninja who is green (like reptile) calls himself scorpion ( to hide his identity, which is basically chameleon's only character trait) but uses moves that both ninjas have. chameleon being a zaterran like reptile would make sense also as reptile originally disguised himself as a human to hide the fact that he is the last of his species, or so he thought.

I think NRS should pull a Jurassic Park, and reveal that Chameleon and Khameleon are the same character, and the Raptors are capable of spontaneously changing sex from male to female in a single sex environment. There was art of Khameleon, too. Once again, great video. Chameleon's Armageddon ending places him behind the scenes in MK1 as well as all the other games after that. I think Jade was implied to be there too, in MK2. Later games placed a few more characters in the first tournament as well. It's an interesting question to ask, just how many fighters were there in that tournament? Also, in Shaolin Monks' opening, Reptile jumps into the Outworld portal in the palace, but then just shows up on the Pit, saying "I do not serve Shang Tsung" which you had in your Reptile video. I always believed that was actually Chameleon.

Yeah, Ermac and Smoke were both said to be at the first tournament. MKSM introduced the idea that Kung Lao was there (disguised as a Masked Guard). In MK9, Baraka, Kitana, Quan Chi, Nightwolf, Cyrax, Sektor, and Sheeva were all there as well.

I've always had this suspicion, it's the only thing that makes sense. I suppose the most minute, pointless teeny gap for me: Why doesn't reptile shapeshift into others? He goes invisible, yet we don't really see him shift. Then I feel silly saying that, because: "Well... Technically he takes the form of a human." so should we *assume* he can, and doesn't?

I would assume Chameleon is the more (most?) powerful of all of them. In my head canon he would be more highly evolved than Reptile. Reptile was starting to learn some of these techniques (he could do Scorpion and Sub-Zero's movesets) but as MKDA reminds us, he was separated from the matriarch and began to devolve. Again, all just head canon, but fun to speculate and make the pieces fit!

That makes plenty of sense actually. Chameleon being the most powerful, would certainly fit. Ended up watching the kontradictions ep right after, which answered some questions. Explains exactly that: He is technically weak. So I suppose we can assume at one time, perhaps he did shift into others. I now realized something now that I know what the truth about Chameleon/Khameleon. So Chameleon is part of the raptor race which Reptile’s race, then how does he know how to the ninjas attacks? I mean with Reptile’s attacks, it makes sense how Chameleon knows his because he’s part of the same race as Reptile. For Khameleon, how does she know how to do the female ninjas attacks? Continuing with Chameleon, remember the other ninjas are for the most part unique then each other (Smoke in the klassic games isn’t unique in terms of move set) while the rest are. How does Chameleon know how to shoot ice from his hands? How does Chameleon know how to summon a clone of himself to attack (Noob Saibot)? How does he know how to summon a spear from his hand (Scorpion and Smoke)? How does Chameleon know how to summon water and strike lightning? How does Chameleon know how to lift and slam people without touching them directly? How does Khameleon know how to use fans and lift people in the air with said fans? How does Khameleon know how to use sais and teleport? How does Khameleon know how to use a staff, a sharp boomerang and know how to Jade’s shadow attacks (it’s similar to Johnny Cage)? I’m sure all these techniques and weapons (with the exception of Ermac) would take time to master. Well that’s another mystery. However I offer an explanation, I have theory : Chameleon/Khameleon in the first 3 tournaments watched and copied the moves and looks of the ninjas he/she copies in the games. Evidence : In the first MK, Reptile isn’t what he would be from MK2 onwards, Reptile was just Scorpion and Sub Zero merged together (color palette and move set wise), so it wouldn’t be far fetched that Chameleon is in the first game and not Reptile (I think it wouldn’t be). This only works with Chameleon, as for Khameleon, it’s a bit harder to say since Jade is green, and because blue (Kitana) and pink (Mileena) doesn’t make green it’s bit harder to say, but perhaps she adapted to green since it’s the color of the raptors (look at Reptile). However, Jade only uses Kitana’s fans in MK2, so her being Khameleon wouldn’t also be far fetched. For Smoke and Noob in MK2 I think that’s actually Smoke because if it were Chameleon, he’d use Sub Zero and Scorpion’s moves at the same time. Noob can use Scorpion’s spear and Sub Zero’s ice attacks. Smoke can only use Scorpion’s spear. Yes you can argue that Noob is Sub Zero, but how does Noob know how to use the spear? Perhaps I’m looking way too deep into it. I made this comment as a just an idea. Maybe Chameleon/Khameleon only know how do to these attacks and abilities is because well, they’re chameleon, I mean their name says it all really. Still, it makes you sort of wonder how Chameleon/Khameleon can do these attacks perfectly.

They have a big chance to fully flesh it out or even throw us a bone by this point, if they really wanted to🤷🏾‍♂️ My head canon is Chameleon is/was a Zaterran Super Weapon or experiment to create the ultimate ninja( hence why he can use other ninja’s attacks.), the same could be said for Khameleon, the female version using their DNA( like their blood of some sorts) Bo Rai Cho even references the character vs Reptile, telling him “there is another”, so NRS knows what they’re doing and acknowledge Chameleon’s existence, but have him in a weird limbo-like state, where he’s a thing, but No one knows him. Chameleon was like a dream come true to me, although he wasn't what I expected. When I was playing MK2 on my SNES I realize that the three ninjas have different inputs for their techniques. So, I thought of a white ninja character that could have all of them at the same time, because they wouldn't overlap. Chameleon couldn't handle all techniques at the same time, because in UMK3 inputs did overlap. For instance down forward low punch triggers iceball, telekinetic ball and shadow ball. Anyway, inputs for choosing a ninja in a similar way Shang Tsung morhps would've been a better idea than make him switch randomly. Such a wasted potencial.

Chameleon was a character stolen from a fan by Arena LLC (under SEGA). This fan submitted the character with a full story and unique special moves as a multi-colored ninja not understanding anything about copywrites and licences and didn't realized he would get ripped off and only get a Ninjak and Judge Dredd comic for his trouble. This was before MK3U was released in arcades. His original uniform was supposed to be solid white.

Meta wise, Chameleon is a mimicry style character, as is a trope of fighting games. He is to Mortal Kombat what Mokujin is to Tekken. Mokujin even has a female counterpart too. Mokujin/Tetsujin and Chameleon/Khameleon.

In the first game, a new ninja is created by combining the other two, giving him access to the moves of both Scorpion and Sub-Zero, and is given no impact on the story whatsoever. In MKII, a ninja under that same name appears now as an actual participant in the plot but with completely different and new abilities tailored to his character. In MKT, both the character Reptile and the move-combining super palette swap appear as separate characters, and once again, Chameleon has no presence in the story. In MKA the same thing happens again. While Reptile went on to be an actual character in the series who was clearly part of the events of the stories of the games, Chameleon, like MK1 Reptile, doesn't really seem connected to anything. Additionally, MK1 Reptile is literally exactly the same thing as Chameleon - a saurian with all the moves of the other ninjas and none of his own. I think the answer is pretty damn obvious, don't you? Chameleon isn't part of the story because he's... not a part of the story. If Khameleon can take her mimicry to the next level, there's no reason to assume Reptile can't and in fact it's reasonable to assume that for a brief period during MK1 he actually did. However as we are told again and again in Reptile's bio as time marches on he retains less and less of his mimicry abilities, reverting into his true saurian form. So, if we put the pieces together, it becomes abundantly clear that Chameleon is Reptile at his full power, and his lack of backstory is due to him being just that, a "what if" character, like Classic Sub-Zero and Human Smoke in UMK3. At least, I think this is incredibly obvious. Then again people seem to just kind of block out that Reptile used to BE Chameleon because his later moveset became distinctive, so idunno. Reptile is 100% Chameleon, though u.u

I have always thought that Chameleon was a Saurian as her female counterpart in Mortal Kombat Trilogy for Nintendo 64 is. Pro tip: if you want to somehow control Chameleon's random morphing, while playing as a fighter that you play well as, say Ermac, spam whatever attack you wish endlessly and you will remain using those moves until the round finishes (or at least it works like this in the PlayStation version, which I have. I'm not sure about PC and Saturn, though).

Between Chameleon, Shang Tseung, and the onslaught of characters, I wish they had one command set for each move set. Scorpion's spear, Sub Zero's freeze blast, and Liu Kang's fireball could all have the same in put. Liu Kang's straight kick, Johnny's shadow kick, and Sub Zero's power slide could all be the same. I'm not saying it has to be simple as Smash Bros, bur at least consistent.

imo the jury's still out on what the Chameleon/Khameleon really are. Tobias' two cents don't count bc he admits he didn't play a role in their stories later on. at most he just says he thinks that was the original idea and that's it.
