This could very well be subject to change since MK retcons it's own lore all the time, but as far as I am concerned Shao Khan was the protector god of Outworld before he overthrew the Dragon King (probably out of jealousy as Onaga's power may have surpassed the gods.) I like this because it sets up a nice parallel between him and his arch nemesis Raiden even though they are not "brothers" in the literal sense.

I would like to remind you that although not Shokan, Onaga himself was a dragon. He literally was the Dragon King. The current version of Kahn portrays him with reptilian spikes and skin. It's also interesting to note that the so-called gods of MORTAL KOMBAT are supposed to resemble dragons when not interacting with people. Another theory could be that Kahn resembles a dragon man in the same way Raiden resembles a human being . Each protector "god" could resemble the race they protect.

While canon in Deception's Konquest is a bit vague, I've always taken Shao Kahn's godhood as canon because it sets up a nice dichotomy between him and Raiden. It just begs the question though; if Raiden is the God of thunder, what is Shao Kahn the God of? War? Konquest? Shao Khan was the guardian of outworld much like Radian. His mission was to protect outworld from Shinnok and other invaders but it became more about stoping Onaga from becoming a God. When Shao Khan killed Onaga he took The thrown and much like Raidan in MK 11 going from servent God to conquering emperor was too much power to pass up. I don’t see Shao Khan as a bad guy, I see him as an outworld guardian that did what he had to to save his real, but got currupted by his own since of wanting to conquer the realms as a way of him wanting to expand his protection that wasn’t needed.

You're close. Onaga actually ruled Outworld and it's implied that he did so fairly. Shao Kahn, however, ended up possessed by "The One Being". The One Being seeks to merge all the realms together, as his body was shattered by the elder gods to make the realms. Shao was permitted to challenge Onaga to Kombat, but Onaga would kick his ass every time. Shao finally stopped playing fair and poisoned Onaga. After that, he usurped the throne and began his conquest of other realms, letting outworld fall into the desolate dustbowl it is now. Shao likely was a good guy at first, looking for the safety of the realm, but The One Being screwed that up. When Shao was deemed dead after Deadly alliance (in reality, he was nearly dead and very weak), the One Being then possessed Onaga during Deception, but left Shao with his mind still being corrupt and lustful of power. The One Being still threatens all of reality and it's implied that all the elder gods combined could not defeat him with the loss of shinnok turning evil. Not even Kronika would be able to stop him.

Shao Khan is Outworld's God-Protector, just like Raiden is Earthrealm's, Argus was Edenia's, Lucifer was Netherrealm's, and that one currently named one that Kochal drove insane was Chaosrealm's. Seido/Orderrealm's God-Protector is currently unknown, though I wouldn't be surprised if the reason why they aren't mentioned is because the Orderrealm government locked them up for loitering 2 seconds past curfew or something equally authoritarian - as Seidans are known to do. Deception's Konquest Mode confirms Shao Kahn's godhood in multiple points, in Netherrealm, Outworld, AND Chaosrealm.

This is a great video. I've been saying for years that Shao Kahn had to be a god. There was something else you forgot that I tend to use to substantiate my stance. Remember, Shao Kahn has Shadow Priests, and priests are usually part of a religious clergy. Given the monuments in Outworld always depicting the likeness of Shao Kahn, I wonder what that clergy worships... :D

I always picture shao kahn indeed as a god or immortal, the idea he is outworlds version of Raiden made the most sense to me. (Since both must adhere to the laws of the elder gods) Though I wonder how much more he became over the years, its often said he has though Shang Tsung the arts of soul magic and is also known to have mastered Blood Magic. Though how he uses all this? I cannot say, but I do believe his basestats of godhood have been far increased over the years too.

Shao Kahn is actually some sort of God in the Outworld realm similar to what Raiden is for Earthrealm. You can see this for example when fighting him in Mortal Kombat 2 or 3 he calls you Mortal and when you defeat him he doesn't die like a normal fighter but he just explodes and vanishes like an Evil Spirit or Demon. Shao Khan can't realy die he is just destroyed when he looses. He is something like a fallen God

Shao Kahn's godhood would make sense, except that he does not always act completely godly. For one thing, we see Shinnok, Raiden, and Fujin constantly teleporting in and out, whereas we never see Kahn appear or disappear in a flash. In fact, in MK9's story mode, he seems rather confined to where his legs will carry him. I have an alternate theory: Shao Kahn is a mortal turned demigod, and the gods of Outworld are subject to him. For this, we first need to think about who Outworld's gods are (they are only mentioned in passing in MK3's intro), and what the nature of Outworld itself is. Outworld is an expansionist realm comprised of many conquered realms. Once a realm is conquered, it seems that the Outworld gods move in and start controlling it, though Kahn is obviously the one in charge. And since the gods themselves are inextricably connected to the realms they inhabit themselves, possibly even being living consciousnesses born from the fabric of those very realms (I base this idea on the fact that Raiden's essence dissipates and reforms in Earthrealm once his corporeal manifestation is killed), it can be theorized that as realms are absorbed into Outworld, the gods of those realms see their wills corrupted, making them subject to Shao Kahn. If Shang Tsung had had an ending in the original MK1, I envision it being something along the lines of Shao Kahn stepping through the dimensional gates and absorbing Earthrealm as Raiden turns into "Dark Raiden" and takes his place before Kahn's throne. With all of this in mind, I suspect that the throne of Outworld itself is the source of Shao Kahn's immortality, and possibly that of Onaga before him. That doesn't do much to explain the line about Kahn, Raiden, and Lucifer being of the same race, though it could be that that particular NPC had misunderstood a deeper truth. Along those lines, I imagine the Lucifer of the MK universe probably had the same sort of deal Kahn had by taking control of the Neatherrealm, being a demon (possibly Oni) and attaining demigod status. Perhaps something similar is true for the royal family of Edenia and their highest advisors, meaning that a retcon could work in that Jerrod, Sindel, Kitana, and Jade are not long-lived by nature (meaning being Edenian doesn't have anything to do with it), but it has more to do with the throne of Edenia itself and the blessing of the gods. Kitana did, after all, offer Liu Kang to rule at his side as king of Edenia FOREVER, not for some thousand years until they grew old and died. And perhaps now they are enjoying the same immortality as king and queen of the Netherrealm.

John Vougias my theory on your first paragraph is that, the same way , raiden was evolved to an elder god, an then came back to be just a normal god, so he could take care of earth, shao khan could transform himself into a mortal, to rule a realm as khan, not as a god, once a god can only be loyal to a single realm, and he wishes to konquer others.

Immortal sorcerers with power over death/necromancy and control of souls, get beaten up hand to hand by martial artists and some army chick with no powers. A normal dude gets metal arms and he goes toe to toe with a goddamn immortal spectre that comes from hell with fire powers, which was created by an allpowerfull sorcerer that gets beaten up by a normal woman that beats him by kicking him in the balls?? The story just sucks and power levels are even worse than jojo's bizarre deus ex adventures. Raiden, quan chi with shinnok's amulet and shang tsung with liu kangs soul and a billion other souls for an endless power source, couldnt even tickle onaga. In mk armageddon, ONAGA GETS KILLED OFF SCREEN BY WHO KNOWS WHO HAHAHAHA its that fkn patheticly lame

I've been a fan since before MK1 got on to consoles. I stopped taking the movies as canon as soon as the first movie showed scorpion and subzero working together for shang tsung. i read or heard somewhere in one of the games (probably around the time of the releases of the four 3's MK3-Gold-trilogy-ultimate) that Shao Kahn is a sorcerer. it kinda makes since he can conjure up weapons and has shot green sparks.

Very interesting vid and theory. I always wondered why we never saw any Outworld gods in the series. Earth has Raiden and Fujin, Edenia had Argus. Who watches over Outworld? Maybe they never had gods to begin with since its a realm comprised of other merged realms, or maybe Shao Kahn was once Outworld's god but now konquerer. or he's descended from one.

Well, in MK3's intro, Raiden does warn the player, "I can no longer interfere as your Earth is now ruled by the Outworld gods." So there probably are others besides Shao Kahn.

Okay let me answer the question of what race Shao Kahn is. In Mortal Kombat 11 Johnny Cage asked Cetrion if she was an *Elder God* like Raiden. In return she said that Raiden is in fact a *Demigod* or _half-god_ Here the NPC from the Konquest Mode says that "Shao Kahn, Lucifer, and Raiden are of the same race of beings." Which means that Shao Kahn is a *Demigod* It would make sense considering how strong and powerful Shao Kahn is. But who is his father? I think it might be an Elder God or maybe it is Onaga. I think it is Onaga because they are very similar. They both look like dragons. It was also said that Shao Kahn betrayed Onaga. Given Shao Kahn's treacherous nature I wouldn't put betraying his own father above him. He was paranoid that his daughter, Kitana, would one day betray him since he did the same thing to his own father. This led to the creation of Mileena someone who was completely loyal to him. But then again this is just my *opinion*.

Before MK11 I would have said God. In light of the new information provided by MK11, the idea of Raiden and Shao Kahn being demigods is really the only explanation. I don't know if the games will ever provide insight into who the father is, whether they want it to be Shinnok like in the movies or come up with a different father for him. Probably leave it unresolved!

As far as I always knew Shao Kahn was a god and took outworld for his own like Raiden took earthrealm to protect on orders from the elder god's to protect the balance... for example Shao Kahn knew about kronika but thought her a myth... He was quick to join his grandmother's side and he took more of the evil/darkness from his father Shinnok and Raiden took the light from cetrion.. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Shao Kahn is part-dragon. Maybe not half, or at least not the same half as Shokan, but there's def some dragon traits there... plus it kind of explains his relationship to Onaga to begin with.

The only sense I would see where raiden and Kahn would be “brothers” is because there are two sides of the same coin one- is the protector of earth realm and one used to be the protector of Outrealm or outer realm - constant conflict Like brothers - both having god like powers - but the thing I hated was the fact They made Raiden accidentally kill liu kang - inMK 9 but that is just me I’m glad they “corrected “ the time line in MK11
