Follow along as I chamfer the chambers of the cylinder on my Ruger GP100. This was only my second time doing this. This was not a difficult job to do as long as you take your time and proceed cautiously.

Just FYI to anyone thinking of doing this work themselves. A better method is to remove the extractor star and just chamfer the cylinder itself. With the star chamfered, you can get cases (38 Spl especially) falling underneath the star when it is at full extension. This causes a nasty jam that you really don't want on a defensive gun. Moon clip guns are fine doing the full chamfer though.

That was almost my first thought. In addition, isn’t there a risk of damaging the extractor star? Cases in the other 5 chambers *should* hold the extractor firmly in place but it seems to me that cutting like this could put stress on the extractor.

nice vid Bob O, I just got my sp101 3" a few days ago, love it, Ruger has made allot of nice changes at least on the one I got, it' left Ruger this September 2017, it came with a tapered cylinder and all the chambers were chamfered, the writing was removed from the left side to the bottom of the barrel, Like you said the work you did has to be done carefully and it does help a great deal to reload under pressure, again thanks for the info, I know I am talking Ruger but a revolver is a revolver, at least close enough, again Thanks

Did you have any extration issues? I've heard both schools of thought some people say you should remove the extractor some say you don't need to before chamfering. Just wondering if chamfering the extrator was fine or if you wish you hadn't acter the fact.

Do you prefer speed loaders over moon clips? I have both but I can do reloads faster with moon clips. Wondered if the opposite was true for you? I agree with you, chamfering makes reloads much faster, whether you are using moon clips or speed loaders.

I did this same kind of thing w/ a de-burring tool. It's less expensive, and the angle was less than 45 degrees. If I was going to do it again... I'd remove the ratchet/ star first.

You could put some dykem blue on them and get a better picture of how much material your removing, when you cant use a chamfer measuring gauge, IMHO..

just curious what is the purpose of this?
@Kornholeeoo
@Kornholeeoo 5 жыл бұрын
dale lankford It is solely beneficial to using speed loads for faster reloads. No other purpose. It is usually done with a drill press with a measured depth stop. You can easily destroy a cylinder using this tool. And as others have mentioned, you should remove the star extractor to do this so you don’t remove metal from it. It can cause shells to get caught under it on some extractions. If you only remove a very small amount of metal, it’s rare. Just breaking the corner is enough if you leave the star extractor in. If you take it out, you can remove a little more.

You chamfered the extractor too? I thought you had to leave the extractor alone so it could grab onto the base of the spent shells to extract them? I may be wrong but I want to be sure before having it done to mine Please advise me on this Great video btw
@BullseyeBob
@BullseyeBob 6 жыл бұрын
You can do the extractor no problem, you just need to be careful to not do too much or there will definitely be problems extracting. The factory chamfering done by S&W on some of their models was such that the rims of spent casings fell beneath the extractor in some cases. I have never had an extraction issue with this gun before or after this job, and I've done maybe a hundred reloads with it. I have since sold the gun to a friend so help fun a precision rifle, and he has shot it quite a bit and has not had any issues at all.

Thank you for an excellent Video. Do you know how I chamfer her the cylinder for my S&W 929; its made of Titanium, one of the hardest metals in the world. I tried with the kit you were using, but stopped as there was no progress and I was concerned the tool would be damaged; I have other revolvers to do.

Why would you chamfer the chambers of a cylinder? Does this improve accuracy? I would never do that to any of my revolvers! You're introducing premature wear to your guns.
@linkedinprofessor
@linkedinprofessor 5 жыл бұрын
A chamfer aids loading with speed loaders and speed strips, especially if you are using lead bullets. A squared off cylinder edge will catch and drag, even a tiny bevel minimizes this to a great extend. If you single load it does not matter. This does nothing to harm the gun. The brass is very solid near the top of the rim so you are not risking a pressure event.
