Arie is one cool dude. Everything about him just oozes race car driver. It was a great day for him and his Dutch countrymen. I was in the infield for this race and the party was just getting started when the race ended. I think there were only two caution flags the whole race. I'll be sittin' on the bricks with my son this year. Can't wait!

Great to hear the commentating team of Paul Page, Bobby Unser and Sam Posey again! Page's passion for the race always came through and listening to Bobby and Sam argue about things was always fun too. The commentating team they have now does a reasonable job but I miss these days.

Amazing, at 2:20 Paul Page/Sam/Bobby stay quiet for almost a full two minutes (over two laps) and just let the race unfold on its own. No blabber-mouth, no "Boggity" no mindless babble. They just let the beautiful sounds of those turbo engines tell the story. And who needed all those overbearing graphics? It's nice to know the standings, but back then we got full-screen views all the time, and we still knew who was leading.

Arie later said that Fittipaldi was pestering him at the end, trying to unlap himself, and he didn't want to deal with the distraction. When Emmo passed him on the mainstretch, Arie says he didn't see the white flag. Back then they didn't have spotters and didn't talk much on the radio, so he didn't know it was the last lap. Seeing the checkers the next time around was a pleasant surprise.

Greetings from California. 🏁💨 Yeah I enjoyed the hell out of this race. There was a handful of drivers that I wanted to win this race. Not in any particular order: Gary Bettenhausen ✝️ Tom Sneva 🏆 (1983) Bill Vukovich III ✝️ Arie Luyendyk 🏆🏆👍 Mario Andretti 🏆 (1969) John Andretti ✝️ Jeff Andretti DNQ This race is very significant because: - it was the first win for a Dutchman. And as with Takuma Sato's victory, it was an absolute joy to watch. - his pace broke a 1971 average speed record by over 20mph!! - his victory coming off the heels of Emerson Fittipaldi's win in 1989 gave the Indy 500 & CART a _HUGE_ boost of interest in the sport because it was someone outside of America - in other words it wasn't another common win for Mears, the Unsers or any other repeat winners. 👍 This reminded me of what it must have been like when Jim Clark won in 1965, followed by Graham Hill's win in 1966. - last but not least - this is the only Indianapolis 500 with nearly 2 minutes of natural sounds (of only the cars blasting around the speedway). All of the above mentioned is why this is one of my top 3 favorite Indianapolis 500s.

5:36 shows the neat pitside fuel tank...painted to look like a Coca-Cola can. Great broadcast won a Sports Emmy that year...however, again terrible camera work at the finish. They picked up Fittipaldi by mistake from the Tower Terrace camera...then cut to the flagman...and we never saw Arie cross the finish line....a preview of the 1992 finish camera debacle.
