I sure hope someone reaches out to you with an explanation about the governor droop, and you're able to use their information to correct the problem and show us how you do it. Thank you, again, for such an informative video! I particularly appreciated the section where you explained the piston rings, their differences, and how to correctly install them with a ring compressor--that was impressive to me. Keep up the excellent work, James! We love it.

Now we understand why many repair efforts are begun and eventually abandoned because improved results are not forthcoming. EVERY detail has to be observed and reasons for malfunction well thought out. In the end, it may simply be an inherent or built in "fault" in the design or engineering. But, "good enough for government work" (so to speak) might be a mantra accepted by the manufacturer. I think that the old saw..."The eye can't see what the brain doesn't know" really applies here. James' eyes and ears can see and hear a LOT that many might otherwise overlook. Thanks for the great content!!

Hello James: your explanation of the govenor was good.Many of your viewers would learn a substantial amount.You also pointed out that the throttle is not fully opened at maximim travel of the govenor arm. I would suggest this is your correction point. Adjust rod length to full WOT(wide open throttle) at maximum govenor position. Then repeat your spring tensioning procedures. On many older engines the govenor rod had a V shape built into the rod and closing or widening rhe V was a standard adjustment to make. Good Luck I hope you share with us your correction of the issue if you go further to correct it. Keep the videos coming you are a great teacher. Kudos to your efforts.
@artpatronforever
@artpatronforever Ай бұрын
Correct, the rod used from the governor arm to the throttle linkage is usually a bent rod that can be bent more or less to adjust its effective length to assure the throttle can fully open if enabled by the governor. It is easy to invert the concept of governor operation. The governor's action works to oppose increasing throttle, so the governor arm works to mimic a variable tension throttle return spring. This opposes another spring that is tensioned to pull the throttle wide open, and its name is confusing or misleading, being called the governor spring. The failure mode for the governor if the so called governor spring broke is a fail safe mode, the governor would slam shut the throttle and idle the engine against its idle adjustment stop screw. Tension force of the governor spring opposing governor action creates a balance of forces for producing an rpm set point. Increase of tension on the governor spring favors higher rpm set point.

That was a great job. I would not call the excessive droop a feature for sure. I would call it a defect. I bet the governor spring is defective, I mean having the wrong tension rating, so much so that it is out of specification for that engine. If your friend has another spring... or you could try swapping the spring from one of those clones just to see if you can get one that is within the adjustment range of those holes in the governor arm, that might get it to carry the load.

Second that, my thougts too - must be something with the governor system not being geared right when tweaking it manually gives lots more power.
@sergey8644
@sergey8644 Ай бұрын
Agreed that the governor spring is likely the problem. The spring provides the force to go full speed. The engine speed is providing the force to slow down. The two work together to maintain the correct speed. If the spring is weak, you can overcome that at a slow speed, which you did. But at high speed the engine overpowers and causes the behavior in the video.

Had to use it yesterday for power outage and my wife was able to pull it out crank it and back feed my house through my generator inlet on main panel . I didn’t break it in properly when I bought it we had a tornado tear up the neighborhood it ran 3 days straight right out of the box . Cool series on this genny. Awesome back to life video. Amazes me the price of parts. My uncle had a small engine shop when I was a kid. I repaired most the work that came in. That was around 47 years ago. You could buy a crank for $10-$15. That and a fly wheel was the most expensive parts except carbs. Carbs like for the big troy built tiller were $100 easy. But back then unless it was physically broken, 15 minutes in the carb cleaner bucket it was brand new. I only remember having to replace a carb once. Guys dropped a tiller off a truck. Busted the carb. Dam ethanol gas ruins carbs in no time now. Wimpy carb cleaner can't get the crap out.

Good job James on the engine rebuild. It's in the bracket.,or that governor spring is possibly stretched out to far.,or to long for it. Another for it is called A sprung governor spring that's most likely causing the issues under A 8000 watts load capacity peak output. That's my thoughts on that part on that one.

@davidblake6889 Ай бұрын
Great work there, James. It was really good that the Champion guy was able to come up with all that you needed to fix the engine. As far as the governor droop is concerned, it must the that the spring rate is too low. The force from the spring must balance the torque from the governor. It appears that the governor is applying more torque than the spring can handle, so as the load goes onto the generator and more throttle is needed, the spring cannot overcome the force on the governor rod. Try another spring, or one with a higher spring rate.
@artpatronforever
@artpatronforever Ай бұрын
Yes, it isn't a tired engine but it could be a tired spring. It is possible also there is a missing additional spring somewhere that may have gone flying.

Another winning video James. I have the same model generator for my personal unit. I have no issue with droop when the load increases. I run most of the house on it with no issues. We lose power about 4 times per year out here in the boonies. I will check to see if my governor setup is the same as the one you fixed. Mine in permanently installed with a covered housing over it. It does start a little hard on propane, otherwise, it has been a great machine. Thanks for the video.

I have been watching and enjoying your videos for some time now, and I love your tenacity in figuring out problems. This time, you disappointed me, just giving up on the governor droop issue. Since you know that there is no problem with engine power, it has to be in the governor setting or spring. I had a similar concern with an older Coleman generator many years ago. I drilled a series of holes in the governor arm and moved the springs until the droop was corrected. It took a little time, but it was worthwhile.

Hi, James! First: 200k, woo-hoo! Second: If there's one thing one should learn from this is to not trust what the mfg tells you. Most people that buy these just turn it on and want it to do what it's supposed to. They don't have equipment to check if everything is working as it should. I guess it's just a sign of the times.

Thanks for the video. I have a Champion 5500W inverter and it was smoking. It had compression but I found oil in the spark plug and also the smell. Took the head out and the piston seems to have a lot of clearance, I can even see the gap of the 1st ring, its just too much. The piston is "rocking" and I can move it... I measured the cylinder diameter ~71.5mm. I think the piston is 68mm and should be 70mm, so I will get a 70mm kit on it and see how it goes. Oil level seemed fine. I can't understand why I still had compression, probably the same oil that entered the chamber was sealing it.

I use non detergent oil for break-in on an engine that is not equipped with an oil pump when I can easily access the oil sump. All of the metal particles go straight to the bottom of the oil sump with non detergent oil. After the engine is broken in you can easily clean the metal out with a bit of brake parts cleaner. It helps to keep metal particles from scoring up rod journals. Detergent and synthetic oils hold the particles in suspension and circulate metal particles rite through your bearings.

I enjoy the videos that deal with the generators the most. But the small engine repairs are also interesting. I especially like the meticulous way you do your work. Inspires the rest of us to follow suit. I watched another you tube creator regarding the subject of long term storage of portable generators. He suggested that the carburetor be completely emptied of gasoline as well as the tank. Then fill the bowl of the carburetor with ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). The reasoning was that ATF will keep varnish from forming and keep the Carburetor passages clean. I would like to hear your opinion on this. Thanks in advance. KOKO!

Cool video. I just replace the rougher than running original Walbro carb on my Generac 5000 B&S. The main jet was stuck in the carb. I could get it out to clean. The bowl was full of crud. So I bought a clone China carb. There was a difference in the distance from throttle arm position to the governor arm with new carb vs the original carb. Once I installed the new carb, the engine went to higher than normal RPM. I turn the engine off. I disconnected the throttle linkage and close the throttle to a lower rpm. I started the engine and I was able to rev the engine up and down manually while holding the governor arm. I could fell the governor arm move as I rev’d the engine. The only thing I thought I could do was to reset governor position to match the new throttle arm distance. I attempted another start with the new position of the linkage and engine still had Higher than normal revs. I stopped the engine. I am thinking that maybe the governor is the issue or the Jet in the new carb is too big and it’s allowing more gas at full throttle? Maybe the Carb on the Engine you’re working on has too small of a jet to get the max power on gasoline?
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 Ай бұрын
I would try to reset it again. It is a very adjustment. Most manuals say to always reset the over when installing a new carb. But with an OEM carb swap it is normally not an issue.

A great repair. Fantastic detail. What is the 'finger' on the bottom of the piston rod cap -- for timing? Why would they cast something easy to break off - a poor design? What scared me are those picky valve keepers, with the thin and thick side - I thought you said the original engine dropped a valve, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason. It's obvious you understand how to install rings. I follow a machine engine rebuilding shop and he mentioned two interesting points. 1) Never twist rings to get in place, gently open them up and seat them. Twisting will destroy the ring. 2) He used to dunk the entire assembled piston in oil and later found out, too much oil in high compression engines could saturate the ring grooves creating the oil to burn and destroy the cylinder wall. His solution was to put a generous squeeze of assembly lube (brown in color - squeezed from a plastic mustard bottle with pointed tip) in a couple of circles close to the top of the cylinder wall. His rational; as you seat the piston the rings will naturally wipe the lube down the cylinder applying the right amount of lubrication. Thoughts?

Hello James. When you clean teh gaskets with a naked razor, I think you can evaluate to purchase the Wiha 43090 Universal Razor Edged Scraper with Wiha SoftFinish Handle. They also sell various types of razor blades. Saludos from Mexico.

There should be a maximum governed speed specification that may have to be set by bending the metal tab to which the governor spring attaches. That maximum governed speed will be above the 3600 rpm to which the adjustment will be made for normal operation. But that maximum setting will have an effect on the operation under loads that are changing when the governor is set to the desired 3600 rpm for normal operation. Setting that maximum allowed governed rpm will assure you are getting maximum throttle needed to not droop at the lower normal operation rpm at 3600. It may be 4100 or in that ballpark, I'll have to check service manual for similar engines. B&S manual is showing 4200 to 4250 rpm Top No Load RPM for 3600 rpm 60Hz gensets.

I know that governor droop is bugging you, Jim. Great job on the rebuild by the way. It's so painful to do all that work and still have a problem in the end. My thoughts for what it's worth: You set the governor to max sensitivity but it's still not sensitive enough. It wasn't surging, so maybe it could handle being set to more sensitive even though there isn't a hole for that. Is there room to drill another hole closer to the shaft? Or if not, could the other end controlling the throttle be extended out to lengthen the lever arm? You are just dealing with levers between the spring and the throttle, so maybe they could be modified to make the governor even more sensitive.

It was very disappointing to fix the main problem just to discover another. The Honda clones always use the outer hole. The inner one is real close to the shaft. I could likely drill another, but I think it is just compensating for a bigger problem. I am going to unload the parts cannon on it in a few weeks. Not holding my breath though. The droop is twice what it should be. Maybe I am fighting a design flaw? Or maybe there was some damage I missed on the governor system after the engine dropped a valve sending piston nuggets throughout the block.

So maybe the engine governor's spring is not tensioned enough, needs more tension? If not the tension, maybe it's the governor design itself? I've had my current lawnmower with a B and S engine since March 2000. A couple months after using it, one day it was running normal, when suddenly the RPM'S dropped to just above idle. Couldn't find anything wrong, so I noticed the governor spring seemed loose. It was still attached at both ends, so I cut off a small amount of the spring near one end. That helped, but it still seemed to be running a little slow. So I cut a little more of the spring. THAT woke up that engine and it's been running like that since. Still doesn't consume oil, or smoke. Following your video about valve adjustments on these OHV Briggs and Stratton engines I checked it last week, first time, and yes there was some excessive clearance. Never thought of that in the past. So I adjusted them both, ran the engine, and it's ready to go. I've got to change the cover gasket, that's on order now. Thanks for the governor speed tip for the Hertz adjustment on the generators. My 5000 Watt gen shows 61-62 Hz and 129 VAC no-load. I don't have a load tester like you, but I'll try some other loads to check it. My Digital MultiMeter has Hertz and Volts AC at the same time in the display. That helps. Thanks for this video and your tips.
