Love how no matter your playstyle, be it ranged, up close, strength, dexterity, faith intelligence or luck, Gundyr will never not be a challenge, he's got no gimmicks, no fancy tricks or crazy magic, he just puts every single ounce of his immense strength and skill into tossing you around like a toy, and when he starts losing he just tries harder

Very good showcase. My favorite boss ! His mixed moves make his fight style so smart and smooth. that's unique even in souls series. Usually when a boss have to face the player he will just have one or two counters options depending on the player's position (if he's not comfortable with he may backdash ... it's the case for more basic design bosses common on DS clones or DS himself). BUT GUNDYR ... no backdash just sometimes a sidestep but quick and followed agressively. No generic combo with no clear limitations. The camera is fine and the sound design suit wonderfully well his anger that he throw on your face. he is not the hardest for me only because his health bar is not HUGE as Midir or orthers DLC's Bosses.

Hands down one of my favourite bosses in video game history. Moderate health pool, moderate damage, and starts off slow enough to make the player think “You’re just the Iudex, but with more health”. Then he goes all anime and charges you down and sprints at you, giving you no time to heal or attack. Parrying him is the easiest way to win, but one mistimed parry will result in Gundyr giving you a trip to the bonfire, with the payment of your souls. Dodging him to find a consistent attack window is impossible, and he is one of the only bosses fast enough to attack you before you can fight back or move. There’s no BS magic or transformation, just 2 warriors battling with all their strength. And the theme and the setting, this is a beautiful fight, especially once you factor in the tragic lore behind it

This Champion Gundyr was same as us, Unkindled one. He tried saving the world just like us whether being a lord of cinder or different way. However, during his times, when he approached the firelink shrine(he went to it as same reason as us) the fire had gone and the firekeeper(another firekeeper at his time) died. Great champion, Gundyr realized that. He was Unkindled one just like us and tried to save or preserve the world. But his time was not right to do it. The flame and the firekeeper were gone already. Gundyr decided to sacrifice himself as 'The tester' finally. He will test every people who try to pass through the Firelinke Shrine. This test means just Gundyr is testing everyone(Players, all Unkindled such Npcs) if they have enough strong minded to save the world/killing lords of cinder. who gives us and all Unkindled one the test: 'Do you really have dare to pass this way through, are you enough willing to save the world just like me?' Time has passed very long time, that's where our new game starts. Our first tutorial boss in this game...

I love how every boss has some massive change for their 2nd phase meanwhile Gundyr just locks in, but seriously he is a pretty awesome concept: a great champion so good at his duty that he was literally too EARLY for the real quest to begin, leaving him to wait years and by that point he's old and infested with the Abyss, plus FINALLY a boss that has something to do with a coiled sword.

I love how he is basically just a tank linebacker with a suit of armor and a halberd and fights like it. One of my fav boss fights for sure. Watching mods and seeing him fight Elden Ring bosses is cool because it was so viscerally satisfying watching Malenia try her usual sidestep move on him only to get brutally punted in the face lol

The only boss that i take pleasure when dying to him. There's no magic, no teleportation shit, no shields, it just makes it a authentic 1v1 experience, and as a plus using no shields just enhances the experience, this is my 2nd favorite boss fight in the series.

Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure that’s precisely what happens. We come in, fuck him up so he calms and can take his position as Iudex, like he was fated to from the beginning, which is one of the reasons he’s so much weaker in the beginning of the game (lore wise of course)

I really do wish we could have gotten a better moveset for gundrys weapon. Like he had all of these shoulder bashes and kicks and stabs and we just get is weird charging spin. Not that the attack isnt bad ass and powerful throughout pvp and pve it's just kinda sad we didnt get and extra combo chain for like more hand to hand attacks.

@@featdirty1127 well, after finishing ER, i can confortably say they failed to deliver a boss like gundy, most bosses are just mini bosses reskins, and the only real bosses (demi gods) are actually not that good, the only one i can think got close to the level of Gundry was Godrick, the only good boss in the game, but it's still a great open world game.

@@anderesandres3058 though I haven’t finished yet, I feel that the reason so many of the bosses aren’t like that is because of 2 things: the bosses are tailored to be more dodge oriented (so new players learn dodge mechanics quicker) and the open world aspect makes it so you can attempt a boss whenever it’s unlocked, with only a few being mandatory to unlock more. This allows the players to grind levels and get good weapons at their own pace, making some bosses a total cakewalk or impossible hurdles. I also do agree that reskinning most mini bosses or just making them hard mob ganks is annoying, but the unique ones I found to be quite enjoyable. Margit/Morgott I found very enjoyable, Rennala was a more difficult take on the Deacons of the Deep, Godrick was fun, Radahn was a cool spectacle fight, and the mounted bosses (eg the Tree Sentinels) were also fairly fun. The constant re use of many boss designs is a little annoying, and I do wish there were some that were basically just two extremely competent warriors dueling, no BS, but so far I have enjoyed many of the bosses Keep in mind though that I’m a casual pleb. I like the lore of the games which can bias how I view a fight, and many of the things that people find enjoyable are opinionated for the most part. I can completely understand why you don’t particularly like the bosses when I like them a fair bit

It was impossible for me to dodge his attacks so I had to learn to parry his thrust attacks. After a bit of practice, it took me about 25-30 seconds to kill him right away using counter-riposte after a successful parry. Maybe you can try that instead of dodging. He’s pretty difficult to dodge comparing to other bosses imo.

Don't give up. Learn his attack patterns and keep trying. Every attack he does with his axe can be parried except for the attacks where he hits the ground. Buy a buckler it's the easiest shield to parry with and it'll help a lot. If it really is too difficult for you then summon sword master and keep trying. I'd recommend trying to stay to his side's when you aren't trying to parry him because if you go behind him he'll do a kick
