I was wearing champion a lot during it's dead phase when it was being sold at Walmart for super cheap and that's all my parents could afford so it's all I had to wear when I was in middle school. I got picked on a lot by the Nike, Under Armour, and Adidas wearing douchebags, due to the fact that I was wearing cheaper champion brand clothing, it being all my family could afford.. well now they're a huge brand costing far more than what it used to cost and now my family are much more fortunate financially than we used to be.. so I still buy champion, because I always have and now people always complement what I wear when they used to do the exact opposite. It has a story behind it and a lot more significance to me than just something I wear.

Back in middle school, us basketball players used to go crazy over the And1 sweatbands and basketball shorts. This was around 96-99. You definitely couldn't get those at Walmart back then. They fell off hard though and started being sold at Walmart. Sad. Edit: Also, And1 was a brand started from a group of ballers kinda like the Harlem Globetrotters. They were like a dream team of the best streetballers on the planet and would make "mixtape" videos of them balling. That's how it all got popular. It's all about trends, once champion was out of style, their quality clothing was bought by people who just needed a no bs sweatshirt because they were really good at making it. Interesting to note, fruit of the loom is now that brand at Walmart, and makes comparable products now. Champion also sells reasonably priced sweatshirts still, a long with the styles. it seems that even falling out of popularity with trends can't stop you when you make consistently good clothing

Tell about my guy!!! In the late 90’s early 2000’s you’d find Champion Sweatshirts at Modells(R I P Filed Bankruptcy, Sad 😞) for a great prices. And when Champion fell off and only my street friends were wearing it this when Champion switched over to the huge C logo 2008/2009 it was pretty decent in price, but NOW,NOW, NOW forget about it!!! I got 2 Champion Sweatshirt/Sweatpants Black Powerblend for $120 on sale at Modells with my Bday coupon if not it would’ve came out to 180-200. Incredible!!! Funny, I got the Black without the sweatpants cause it was starting to get windy at the end of September beginning of October. I ran to my nearest Modells and bought the Black for $20 I was shocked 😯! Then the following year I went to that same Modells and bought 2 Sets. Champion, Carharrt, Russell Athletics, Dickies were brands mainly worn my uncle and cousin that did construction. TBH....My Mom was the first person I see with Champion Shorts and Winter socks that lasted for almost 10 years. She probably got them in the early 90’s and we got rid of it in 2002/2003. Since Virgil did Pyrex Vision in 2012 and then later Off White, Champion became the IT BRAND for a whole generation of kids that would only wear Supreme....Growing Up I’m not gonna say I wasn’t a hypebeast in the 2000’s cause I was especially with Bape and BBC the quality on everything from the clothes to the shoes to the accessories was PHENOMENAL!!! And even though I didn’t wear Champion in those days seeing my friends with it on I’d look at the texture and know. By no means am I saying that Champion fell off I’m saying It got rebirth a resurrection a resurgence to be Popular again! Which is fine just don’t make so Damn EXPENSIVE!!! Quickside note just got Reverse Weave Champion Sweatshirt Black It’s worth it. Very Warm...Just wait for a sale.... Blessings 😇 Take Care 🙏

Interesting video. My 15 year old son asked and recieved a couple of Champion sweatshirts for Christmas this year. I wore Champion clothing in high school and college which spanned 1989 to 1996. I think a few things that have little to do with Michael Jordan contributed to the fall of Champion. Champion always made quality clothing but the following factors contributed to their fall in popularity. Starter brand became huge in the '90's primarily making windbreakers, jackets, and winter parkas for all the major sport leagues. I remember in high school everyone " who was any one" had to have a Starter jacket for every particular season and you would wear it all day long covering up whatever other shirt you were wearing. The biggest contributing factor was the the NFL, NBA, NHL, and most major NCAA universities signing exclusive apparel agreements for uniforms with Reebok, Adidas, Nike, and then more recently Under Armour beginning in the late 90's early '00's. Starter and Russell Athletics would be good companies to consider doing one of these videos about.

You are right about Starter. They were huge in the 90s. People were actually getting jacked for them in my city. I wanted one but my parents said no. Jordan during the 90's began selling his shoes through Nike. Maybe that might have played a roll into their down fall. Also, during the early 2000s, Nike began sponsoring Tiger Woods and many other athletes that helped elevate the brand.
@nozoto5 жыл бұрын
True, even Adidas and Puma suffered the consequences of snobbing Jordan. Before the deal with him, Nike was a brand lagging well behind. The single decision to sign Jordan on his own terms and give him creative power when it comes to his line of products made Nike the juggernaut they are today. They've ended to be associated as a more ubiquitous sport brand than Champion. Now that Champion's owner repositionned it on a more booming clothing market (the "athleisure" one) and used their outlets for full visibility, it's rising again.
@supratrd9005 жыл бұрын
Jordan shoes has always been sold through Nike since the 1980s. I thought their downfall was losing the rights to the NBA and having Nike takeover. If I remember Nike started making NBA jersey in the 98 season. Nike wouldn't become the powerhouse they are today had MJ originally sign with Adidas the sponsor he wanted.

I was President of Champion in the 90's Your explanation is way off. First of all MJ was and is a Hanes spokesperson. he never represented Champion. He did wear the Champion brand when they sponsored the Olympic team. The major problem was that Companies like Nike and Adidas used shoe revenue to drive their new apparel businesses. Key retailers gave their space to the big consumer brands. Champion could not compete with the marketing spending generated by the shoe companies. Great relationships such as with the NFL, NBA and Notre Dame Football were lost since Champion could not provide the dollars being generated by the shoe companies. Under Armour then became a dominant brand as well.. The comeback began with an exclusive deal with Target on a sub brand called C9. It now is much hotter than it was. Unfortunately Target has dropped the brand which represents about half of Champion's sales. Hopefully they will be able to recover the lost sales but certainly a blow to the brand. Champion Europe, a more fashionable positioning does provide much needed innovation. Best of luck to Champion. Hope this helps set the record straight.

I find it crazy that I'm actually conversing with you so randomly. You have no idea the imprint it left on this town, actually you might, but Champion still gets referred to a lot around here. Mostly everyone mid 40's and older that's truly local most likely knows another because of working there and having that beast of a brand behind the biggest employer in town, next to Archway, made the town flourish. Bars and businesses boomed because of the money people made there and spent elsewhere. It's the cliche small town story but regardless. You see, Champion has been part of my personal life since the beginning, my parents met there, they built relations with people in town because of it, they and many others tell AMAZING funny stories of things that happened or that they did and no one really regrets that time of their lifes. It really sucked for the people here when it closed down, but I can understand why you made those choices given those reasons. In a strange way, given JUST how much Champion set the path for my existence and ultimate lifestyle, I'm honestly a product of Champion itself.
@michaelflatow9805 жыл бұрын
We employed many people who transferred from Perry. They were some of the finest people that I have ever worked with. Their love of the brand was amazing. I could spend hours explaining the situation which occurred when Sara Lee bought the company. They did not understand the sports apparel business. The three years I spent with Champion largely was a time to undo a faulty strategy. It was a complex problem based on what I indicated above, as well as competing with offshore production. I am glad the brand is being revitalized.

Enjoyed the video. Born in ‘85, so I feel where you’re coming from. To add onto your MJ theory, after his second retirement leagues besides the NBA started using other brands (Reebok, Nike, etc.)to outfit their teams. This boosted their brands profile by association while causing Champion to appear lesser. Same for NCAA. Premier schools went with more popular brands causing Champion to seem like the brand of losers or schools outside of power 5 conferences. Totally agree about its resurgence. I think the shoes are still looked at as butter cookies depending on who you ask but they do represent the style today. I think FILA is very similar. The gear is always on point for Champion. Think the sneakers are catching up but will take longer to truly compete with other high end brands.

'91 baby here! I agree company man, it's really refreshing and comforting to see a brand like champion make a big comeback or be trendy again. I was thinking of that the moment I saw this vids thumbnail

I've considered making that suggestion. Maybe he should wait until next May when it turns 350.

I've looked into it. There was so much to it I didn't know what to focus on at the time.

I loved a pair of shorts of theirs I had from the 90s, and all of my high school sports uniforms were from them as well! So cool then, and it’s nice to see their reemergence now at such a high level
