Growing up, we were always told, "If you don’t get a degree, you’ll end up working at McDonald’s." Yet here we are, with a surplus of degrees in the workforce, and many still find themselves in those same entry-level jobs. Employers used to see a degree as a clear path to opportunity, but now they demand experience-something that’s becoming harder to obtain. How are we supposed to gain that experience? There’s no such thing as a college for it. On top of that, we’re warned not to job hop because it “looks bad” on a resume, even if we’re escaping a toxic workplace, dealing with layoffs, or other life challenges. For older Millennials, starting over with internships or volunteer roles isn’t an option-we need to support our families, and besides, wasn’t college supposed to prepare us for a career? Even with a few years of experience under my belt, it’s still not enough. Companies want 10 to 20 years of experience for roles, but what happens if you’ve been laid off or had to leave a toxic job? To have that much experience, you’d have to reach a certain age-and then face age discrimination. I'm approaching 40, and I don't have the luxury of spending 5-10 years volunteering to gain more experience. Looking back, if I had known that companies prioritize skills and work experience over a degree, I would have skipped college and focused on volunteering or similar opportunities when I was younger. Although I did some of that, it still wasn’t enough. The gap between rich and poor continues to grow, with the middle class slipping into obscurity. It’s a relentless cycle of unattainable expectations and limited opportunities, making upward mobility feel more like a fantasy than a possibility.
@ammanbansal2265Ай бұрын
A perfect way of explaining it. We're told back then that "college degrees will get you a high paying job, get married, have kids and buy a house and you'll be successful." It's weird how we evolved from an era of companies wanting to hire people with college degrees to companies that are simply looking for a high school diploma.

@@soberanisfam1323 Eh... That doesn't even make sense. "Capitalism" isn't the problem it's a system based on supply and demand, if you just blame the system you'll never fix the problem. But because of those aspects, now we have higher costs of living which takes away peoples ability to spend on other things. The job market is of course affected by capitalism in a way. Since people can't spend as much, see above as part of the problem, now companies can't spend as much on jobs so they have to cut down and have one role fill many and probably pay less then usual. The "right" way was to show loyalty by staying put for at least five years and ideally 10 or more. Glad I ignored the advice and did it my way. Each jump came with a hefty raise and I now out earn all the folks that stayed put. Many have been laid off after 10+ years at their companies. was just in this situation recently, unemployed for 10 months, savings depleted, ground beef and rice ONLY, minimal driving. I applied to at least 30+ minimum wage jobs, about 10 interviews, some said they weren't hiring (so why post a job position?), some said they would get back to me but never did, I went through a 4 hour security training class with Allied Universal (they NEVER got back to me). And after 8- 10 months of BS, one restaurant hired me and am slowly getting back on my feet, it was a frustrating and stressful experience.

1) Stop using recruiters as interviewers on this topic because they simply don't have an unbiased view about what they are discussing. Not to mention they are beholden *ALWAYS* to promote a healthy job market in any point of time. It annoys me to death how many people on your show keep promoting lower wages or some ridiculous notion that less money is going to help when the matter of the fact is many people's lives would change dramatically from a bigger bump in salary because the median income is already low. 2) Research needs to stop using surveys as the ultimate methodology and use reported total applications to get hired categorized by job type to truly understand how hard things are. We are all annoyed at how none of these stats are published and gives a false sense of unrealistic expectations from employers who expect perfection. The crux of the issue sometimes is not choosing at all hurts more than trying to get the best. 3) There was a minor video done on ghost jobs why isn't this further looked into? Why don't we have laws around this? I mean we have advertising laws about what can and can't be shown but somehow we're supposed to expect all job postings are real and when the applicant gets hurt then sorry you're out of luck? Also regulating the job posting market and sites would actually force companies to push in real expectations rather than lie about everything they list so why isn't there a bigger ruckus about it? 4) The education system in USA has to change for the better and the new government that the people voted in want to degrade that. Public education needs to teach good things in general that should cost little or nothing to acquire. 5) Do actual studies on what actually helps job matching better instead of just coming to the conclusion there are no people on the market for a certain job. What is a really bad trend is no training at all and no studies are done to prove this. It kind of matches a couple of the previous points I've listed before but the survey point is the main issue at heart here and understanding a mismatch is the problem here. Nothing is mentioned on how wide the mismatch is or does it only match half of the requirements or is the interview process too shallow to know how good the candidate is? Again this is terrible journalism from a big media company like CNBC and you should dig deeper into the why... For all we all know this might be a money thing and there was a KZbin video done where a certain company would only hire fans because it would pay them less now fancy that...

@serpent77Ай бұрын
I 100% agree with your point about truth in job postings. The two main reasons ghost positions exist are to allow for fraud, which is illegal, but they're not being addressed. The first reason is that in order to "prove" a need for an H1B hire, the company has to show that the talent required does not exist in the location needed. So the company will throw up a job posting for 3-6 months with impossible or conflicting job requirements (e.g. must be proficient and have 10 years experience with a 3 year old tech.) They'll then use that as evidence to get an H1B that will promptly be turned into an indentured servant. Since they can't pay H1B workers substantially less than an equivalent on-shore, they'll just turn their work week into 60-80 hour week and get double the work for the same money, with no complaints cause that employee doesn't want to get themselves and their family deported. This is not technically illegal, but it is fraudulent and violates the spirit of the H1B program. The second reason is tax and other financial benefit. If a company got huge tax breaks to open an office that came with employment targets, the company can often times keep the free money, and not hire the number of people they promised by running ghost posts to "prove" they want to hire, but not enough people are qualified or applying. Or companies also get benefits if they show they're in a position of growth. That can be "proven" by keeping a bunch of ghost posts rotating in and out. There are a handful more of the "this one secret trick will make your company millions..." type of schemes, but this post is already long enough.

Greed has destroyed the American dream. Most people working right now can't afford a emergency (car repair or medical issue) I have spoken with young people who have already settled their mind on living in a apartment because they can't afford a home. Not even a small one. Furthering your education used to be a good way of insuraning you could have a good livable wage. But now they graduate buried in debt and the job they were looking for gone due to technology or downsized in highly competitive field. Average working Americans can't afford a car or home 2 of the basics of the American dream. Wages have stagnated but companies are profiting. But those profits are not being translated into wages not even a small portion. The new generation of worker is not going to work in this environment they quit quickly because they believe in showing the company as much loyalty as the company shows them. Good luck.

Living paycheck to paycheck is also called a budget. Most Americans say they can't afford their wants because they don't budget and don't realize you don't actually want the house as much as you want other things. These videos also ignore lifestyle inflation. You say you need 100K to be comfortable but once you get there you buy a bigger house, a fancy car, nee toys and subscriptions. Now you are at 100K and believe you need 150K to be comfortable.

HR departments don't care if you are fit for the job, or even if you are the best candidate They will receive thousands of cvs, and then discard all except the ones with most experience and study. You may be able to do the work perfectly, but if you have neither years of experience or college, your chances of getting even an interview are close to zero. Only by applying to multiple companies, everyday, for months or even years, you get hired for a temporary job to help with new year's sales or replace someone sick. Also, if you don't like to lie at interviews, or if you are bad at speaking, your chances are even worse. It doesn't matter if you are good for the job, only the impression the hirer gets from you in 20m.

So it's safe to say that people might appear fine on the outside, but in reality each are dealing with challenges that others are not really aware of. Everyone needs a higher income/salary, but that still varies whether a person is a skilled and experienced in the industry, plus the job title a person holds in general.

Thank you for talking about this!! I went into a deep depression in 2022. I think graduating in the pandemic totally screwed a lot of us. I went to a good college, have work experience, tried my best to save. But I found myself working in retail, unable to find a better job, living at my parents, and doom spending. I’m doing better now, but I’m paying off the debt and still applying and interviewing. People don’t talk about reverse age discrimination & how companies should be incentivized to invest in employees (salary + opportunities + training) and they will build a more loyal workforce.

3 Points to make: 1) $100k is barely enough for one person (not a household) to live relatively comfortably; 2) You probably need one or more of these advanced post-graduate degrees (e.g., PhD, PharmD, MD, MBA) to earn such income. 3) No kids unless you have $300k+ household income.
@ZeffpenguinАй бұрын
You are either a child or exceptionally irresponsible with money. You do not need 100k to live comfortably as a single person, you may need a post graduate degree to earn 100k, but you don't need 100k to live comfortably, and plenty of people have kids, even today, with household incomes below 100k let alone 300k. About a year ago, my old employer opened 4 jobs, starting salaries ranging from $80k-$110k, cheap insurance, hybrid, pension, and fantastic vacation accrual. I was on the interview panel for all three - and all 4 positions went to external candidates. The odd thing is, we received relatively few applications for each of those position...so 2 of those postions went to Gen Z, even though the position was intended for people with more experience. Moral of the story: swing for the fences when applying. My next job, I had to highlight transferable skills and willingness to learn because it was a new industry with a solid future....but most local people didn't have direct experience.
