This made me tear up. As a wrestling fan for 40 years, I've seen an awful lot go down at tournaments, not all of them so good, especially as the generations changed and it became more about pure winning instead of sportsmanship and having fun. And this amazes me! Weak? No kid; you're not weak. You have the strength of David and Samson combined! It takes a strong man to do the right thing! And so went a good deed in an unjust world. I was at this tournament to see it live. Though I never knew it made national headlines. I was not surprised to see him do this because of the amazing character Marek is. Makes me feel old at only 23 years old to think he's a senior now. Mr. Bush did such a good job with all of us. We won with honor and lost with it as well. So proud of this young man. Marek was already going to be given the win. *Logan wasn't going to be allowed to finish the match.* Marek didn't want to win the match that way because Logan was winning and was going to win the match anyway (as per Marek). So it was either take the win ONLY because of a technicality (or fluke injury) and not because he earned it, OR give the win to the better wrestler that day, which was Logan. Marek decided honor and integrity were more important than having another "W" on his record.

No, no respect and no sportsmanship. It may surprise those of everyone gets a trophy generation, but that was completely self-serving, disrespectful and dishonorable. He robbed the other kid of his dignity and pride as an athlete, by putting on a pitty display. A 'sportsman' would've had the respect to stand up and say Im not going to fight an injured opponent. Instead, he used the other kid to signal his virtue.

@@springbloom5940 I just found out below that he was losing 5-0 with 30 seconds. So that makes his motives significantly less admirable. No way he was going to win. given this new info, your analysis is more feasible. As for the media company, they clearly do not have a grasp on moral right and wrong.

adam glover I also wrestled in hs but I would be mad if I didn’t win, in this case I mean. Yes I would understand if I was just handed the win but this situation was not like that at all. He was winning and an injury that imo should have stopped the match happened I’d be upset that I’d lose. So I see what you’re saying and I agree on most situations but I think this one is a little different

Wrestling is a competitive sport. And like all competitive sports, if you're handed a free win it never feels great, but think of the other side. Merick was handed a free win and he refused it. Logan, who was winning was given the win out of respect for being ahead. It may not be the win he imagined but it was still a well deserved one.

I wrestled and played football in HS. Now as a 42 YO man I understand that this kids example is more rewarding than a win. But everyone has their own opinion on the matter and they are entitled to it. God convicted his heart to be compassionate and Marek sacrificed his own glory to allow another competitor to shine. Look what happened in the end…Mareks story made the news for it so it was the right decision.

Exactly why this kid is an idiot. Why would he not continue and take advantage of the injury. If the other guy wanted to surrender he could surrender. You should never go easy on someone because you think they are weak or because you pity them.

He shouldn't have let the injured kid win, and the injured kid shouldn't have taken that pity win. The right thing here would have been to stop the match; continuing the match w one of them injured is both unfair and potentially even worse for the injury.

Most of the time, wrestling wont let you just stop. My friend used to wrestle(came from a school that was basically only good at wrestling) and he accidentally broke his opponent's nose at state. They wouldn't stop the match so he had to continue. He won but dislocated his shoulder a few matches later and they wouldn't stop his match either.
