Except Kratos is dumber than a bag of rocks. Vergil plans, Kratos reacts and he's not even smart enough to react intelligently. Kratos (until the later games) only moves from on target that steps in front of him to the next while Vergil meticulously sets up people to react to what he does to serve his needs. Even with Arkham, Vergil manipulates as much as he is manipulated. Kratos lumbers towards whatever steps into view and presents itself as a target.

(don't try to read my name - you'll do it wrong) Why did everybody forget to analyse relationship between V and Nero? V tried to open his heart to Trish, but she gave no answer to V. She isn't "his mommy". And then we see how V opened his heart to Nero: 'I always wanted to be protected and loved". After saving from demon. And then Nero saved V for the second time - helped to get to Urisen just in time. Nero said to Vergil directly he didn't make difference between Vergil and his human side, the only fact that had meaning is that Vergil is his family. Nero fight to Vergil to prove his MOTIVATION and POWER to protect his family. Vergil finally found what he lacked - protection, love and, moreover, forgiveness. Everyone was thinking that Nero would try to kill his father in vengeance: Trish, Lady, Dante. But Nero wanted to save him, so he called Kyrie - the girl who forgived Nero for being demon. Also there is another great moment - relationship between V... and Nico. Nico is the weakest character in games - she don't fight at all. She is weak herself, but she makes Nero stronger. She shows V what is human friendship is like. She is powerless but yet happy doing what she likes. Nero and Nico showed Vergil how to help each other, another way to get more POWER. How connections with other people can make you stronger. And Nero became the Vergil's reason not to fight, but to live.

Don't forget that V hanging out with his pets, so he doesn't feel alone and Griffon has that sense of dork and humor and he saves him so many times and Shadow is basically like sword and shield to protect himself and fight demons, and Nightmare is basically feeling superior and being above these demon minions and as well as the bosses and unless destruction, and being human you feel the needs of others and that you can't be stronger forever and it's okay to be weak

V admitting he wanted to be loved and protected while Nero is literally carrying him is so tell. Vergil would never admit that to himself or others even though he ached for that connection. But its Nero who draws it out of V. Vergil is still too proud to admit it when he's restored, still can't connect to his brother and his son except through violence but he can makes the smallest gesture of it when he tosses the book to him. Vergil is still unable to connect, to even hand his child that book but he does give it to Nero. Its very telling Vergil still has sentimentality for Blake's work given the artist's emphasis on breaking rigid doctrinal beliefs and societal conventions. Vergil himself can't take Blake's advice (yet) but he at least can give his son something that reflects his father's lost innocence.

Something I've always loved in DMC5 is when Vergil says "thank you Nero", because it shows genuine character development. Think back to DMC3, where when Arkham seemingly helped Vergil, the son of sparda killed the man as soon as he outlived his usefulness (Or at least, Vergil tried to kill him). And yet when Nero helps him similarly he shows actual gratitude. Now to be fair, Arkham is a lot less likeable than Nero, but even so I don't think old Vergil would have had any qualms about killing Nero on the spot just the same as he did with Arkham. Having to walk as a weak human, V seemingly planned to use Nero to regain his power and save his life, but as he took a walk on the human side, V found something that all his power could never provide, a genuine ally and companion. Some might even say V began to see Nero as a friend, as in what could be his last moments he pours his heart out to the young devil hunter, as if he just wants someone, anyone to know his truest desires above power before he may die. And then with his help, V manages to do it, merging with Urizen and reforming into Vergil. At this point he's on top of the world. He has all the power he could ever want, and Dante is too worn out to present any real challenge just yet. But as he leaves, even with all his power back, Vergil stops for a second. Almost hesitant as he glances back at his only real ally in the world, and thanks him for his help. There's no snark or backhandedness, like "Thanks for falling for my plan fool!" Just a simple and real, "Thank you". Maybe that's what made Vergil wonder about how his life might have been different if he and Dante switched places. Dante has friends like Nero and Nico all around him, and still manages to be powerful. But even though Vergil has just as much power, he's alone. He no longer has Nero, or Nico, or even Griffon to both annoy and support him.

Something is gnawing at my mind about Virgil. If he was in pursuit of control to that degree. Then how come Nero was born? It strikes me that he'd use protection. So, either the condom broke, the pill doesn't work on demon seed or cambion (Hybrid of human and demon) seed. I think that Virgil would have been more careful with that mindset. Even at a young age. Not sure about Nero's mother though. (This is in no way me saying Women are careless.) Considering we know next to nothing about her. All we know is she gave Nero up for adoption. So if they used protection. She couldn't bring herself to terminate the fetus. If Virgil knew. I doubt it would resonate with him well. Bringing back the trauma of his childhood. Making him fear he will fail to protect his son. Also to add. How did Virgil impress her enough to plant the old Sparda bloodline seed? Did he just tell her who he is? That he is the son of the demon they worship as a god. I guess that'd probably open any Fortuna lady's legs to know they are laying with the close equivalent of Jesus.

Given the way she was dressed, with a hood up, it's pretty likely she was a prostitute. Prostitutes used to wear hoods over their faces in old English cities because it was a shameful profession. Also it would make sense why she gave up Nero if that were the case. As far as we know she didn't know much about Vergil, but I highly doubt Nero came out as a blue demon baby. In the novels, Nero even got teased as a kid by the others because Fortuna was a small place where everyone knew everyone, so they assume his mother was a prostitute who got an unwanted pregnancy and gave up the baby. IDK about Vergil though. Dante said "I guess you were young once too" implying that he was once a horny teenager as well, but my impression is maybe he was just curious about what sex was like and she offered or he purposefully wanted a kid to see what would happen. Don't know why he'd want a kid that's biologically more human than demon, but it's a possibility.

He most likely just didn't care since it's not 100% guaranteed you'll conceive a baby once. On top of the fact that deep down vergil actually did feel human emotions he was just good at hiding it. He can be just as weak and careless as Dante or Nero Nero's mother was a prostitute it's pretty much all but confirmed. Going by the lore of the story Vergil got intimate with this said prostitute before the events of DMC3 and it technically wasn't until his adventures within fortuna and his first encounter with arkham that he actually decided to abandon his humanity He was pretty much just wandering around and learning more about his father possibly even trying to find him. It wasn't until his first meeting with Dante when that personality of vergil we all know and love was planted and it wasn't until he met arkham that it actually grew into the problem that it inevitably became. Never was really explained but DMC5 hints at the fact that him seeing Dante alive actually made him believe his mother abandoned him and saved Dante- because up until that point he thought they were both assassinated So going by this it's plausible that vergil while on one of his many adventures had a little taste of human which his father so dearly loved without thinking about or caring if she got pregnant

Given the way Vergil grew up, always on the run and hunted by demons, I'm not sure he had very good sex education. He might not have known was a condom was in the first place. As for Nero's mother.... I wish we had more info on her to do some real theorizing and not just speculation.

I think of all the dmc cast I understand Vergil the most. I grew up with no control, and it’s partly why I used a massive, unruly sword when I was training as a swordsman. It was impossible to wield for anyone else but when I wielded it I was the one in full control of any match, after all what are you gonna do when a 60lb sword with 30+lb of torque is swung down besides collapse under the 300+ pounds of pressure. It’s why for a long time I loved being called “the honorable” and “the lion sin”, it felt like a status of control was given to me with power being the means I gained it. Now I’ve far outgrown that phase as I realized I truthfully am that guy even without those titles or without that gigantic sword but even still my secondary sword I use, a katana, lets me be refined and in control when I fight. But now even when I’m not “in control” I still feel at ease, in control and safe because I’ve learned to move past that insecurity, because I know I already am good enough and I feel like the same could be said of Vergil at the end of dmc5

Inferiority and thirst for power? That's interesting I feel kind of relate to each of Sparda's descendants after watching each of the analysis and retrospectives. I makes me more to believe that most of human behavior is grey, which means we can use inferiority as a drive both for social benefit and personal profit with a tendency to one side and also can shift one to another in certain condition. I love the way you analyze characters in games. It is like you explained that even though those characters aren't exist in physical form, they can teach us one-or-two things about life if we are willing to dig deeper. What are their motives, what they do to achieve their purpose. It is a good reflection for ourself to become a better part of society and a better human being.

The inputs on combos isn't the hard part for DMC. You really only need 5 or 4 fingers on the controller. The hard part is having a plan on what to do and knowing what goes into what and fast jump canceling.

Is it possible that Vergil’s need for power stems from his demonic half and his control from his human half. When he was a child he was stabbed with the Yamato which is know to separate human from devil. It is possible that it stopped his demonic half from being suppressed by the human half and allow it self to be separated from his human half and allowing it to have more control over Vergil. Something similar is seen with Dante when he is stabbed with Rebellion, but they unite allowing the two sides to act as one being and giving Dante more devil power, but allowing his thoughts and desires stem from the same place. But with Vergil his need for power stems from his demonic side as seen with Urizen and several devils. The devil arms also play into this as the winning devil absorbes the losers power. His control stems from is human half as i don’t think the demon has full influence over Vergil so his human half is in most control and control is seen in many aspects of Vergil's character Like his fighting style and mannerism.

I believe when Vergil split himself he was hoping to truly discard what he say as his weaknesses to avoid being weak. However given that V had Virgil's memories it seems that he didn't come out of it as the strong demon he wanted to be but as the weak human he wanted to discard. Now he's left to feel helpless without his demon side to protect him and without his demon side influencing his personality it allowed him to explore the human aspects of himself.

so in a sense of way we can tell that vergil strives for power to protect his loved ones like kaneki ken from tokyo ghoul in the end of season 1 we see he goes to join the aogiri tree even after what they have done. Because he needed power to protect his loved ones, the reason behind this is when rize said ''to protect one person many others are to be sacrificed'' (at least thats what i remember).So thats why we see that vergil tosses away his humanity to gain more power

I've been going all over looking at character analysis of Vergil and I've compiled it into my own character analysis in a doc. As Urizen is his cold indifference and disgust of humanity embodied and V is his compassionate, vulnerable, stylish and dramatic side embodied, and before he would have had both but now all they are, are those aspects of him so I don't necessarily agree that he knew how the experiences of V would change him or what Urizen and his failure to gain power would.
