Some fans made the math and with the regular championship system, Gordon eould have been easily with 6 championships with a possible 7th, one that would have been close with Tony Stewart. Johnson would still have gotten a grest career with 3 championships and a possible 4th. Carl Edwards would have been a 2 time champion aswell.

It breaks my heart as a fan since 2002 that this was Gordon's last Cup when he came so close in 2004, 2007, and 2014, with chances in 2009, 2011, and 2015. Nonetheless he had a legendary career and this season was another page in it. Speaking of legendary, how about Elliott Sadler's crabwalking drive to the finish at 7:40? 😂😂

I think 2001 was Jeff's second most impressive championship. 1998 is first because of the mind-bending numbers he put up that year. But in 2001, the competition was getting tougher with more competitive teams entering the sport and young guns like Stewart, Dale Jr and Harvick had already shown they were gonna make a splash. Yet Jeff still dominated with over 2000 laps led and 6 wins.
@evanwilliams6406
@evanwilliams6406 5 жыл бұрын
9th in the points and a 3 win season is a season that any driver would kill for, but Jeff Gordon isn't just any driver. This championship became more and more significant as Jeff continued past his 30's. He looked capable enough to get more titles but so many promising drivers were moving up the ladder which contributed to less wins but still dominant and the Chase was a factor as well as Jeff Gordon was better on the old Latford system where what you did over a season counted rather than a ten race stretch. To say 2001 would his final championship, it is so hard to believe because I felt like he was still capable of getting seven like Jimmie and he was good enough over the course of those seasons(2004, 2007, 2014) to win championships had the system not changed. But I think Jeff wanted to pave his own path rather than try to equal Dale Earnhardt or Richard Petty. He had so much respect for Dale and his death certainly affected him and everyone that year. It took a lot of fun out of the racing and it still shows today.

Johnson would have probably won in 2004. That team did a lot of testing in the final races of the regular season which resulted in a bunch of blown engines and poor finished just before the Chase started. No chase, no testing and Johnson pulls off a consistent late summer into early fall to get the title.
@KidInfamous24

Falling Pictures Productions yes you are right for sure. The past 7 races include a win at pocono, 36th at Indy, 40th at the Glen and Michigan, 3rd at Bristol, 14th at Cali, and 36th at Richmond. Assuming these weren't wrecks he got caught up in and were experiments for the chase Johnson likely would have won the 04 title.

I don't know if I would call that season underwhelming per se in terms of solid years.. granted he didn't dominate as much as 97 or 98 but it was still a very badass year for Jeff. Jarrett dominated the first half then he fell off after New Hampshire and Jeff took over and put the series in a stranglehold. Minus the Pepsi 400 off the top of my head I don't recall him having much stress. It was his return to form year and he had a ball. The circuit had a lot of parity too and it made for a fun year after such a nightmare of a start. Then Brooke dumped him and he fell off the mountain for a couple of years.. I honestly think if they had a more decent split he wouldn't have fell off like he did the next couple of years. In 2002 especially he lost his mojo over it. It blew up his ego and he had a hard time re-finding it. Once he did Johnson was up and stealing Rick's eyes more.

@BLACK ICEYOU It's not about effort. It's about strategy that is no doubt very different between the formats. More effort, research, and testing being put into the Chase race tracks for example. Many other factors I won't list. If you go back in time and keep the new Chase from happening, I guarantee you the results would be different. I don't know what they would be, or exactly how different they'd be, but they'd be different. I'm not going to say they would be the same because I'm not God, or Doctor Strange with the time stone.
@jasonstraight1320
@jasonstraight1320 5 жыл бұрын
@BLACK ICEYOU Little differences short term can lead to bigger differences long term. In Iceberg's video applying the old format into the Chase era, he says Jeff Gordon, not Kurt Busch, would win the title in 2004. Does that mean Kurt Busch leaves Roush sooner? Stays longer? He also says Jeff Gordon would win again in 2006. If so, does he retire earlier? Does the fact of other drivers finishing higher or lower in the standings change their future outlook? It's very plausible. One position difference could mean keeping of losing sponsors, and ultimately their rides.

The chase would have been introduced in 2012 if Kenseth hadn't won the championship in 2003. Look at Edward's 2011 season. His only win of the season was at the 3rd race, he led for the majority of the season and would have won the championship one race early.

@@needsmetal Not exactly. DJ broke his ribs in qualifying for the Coca Cola 600. In the races leading up to the season-turning Pennsylvania 500, Jarrett and Gordon were tied for the points lead, a solid two months after Jarrett broke his ribs. It was the Pocono late-race double-fumble of Jarrett that also started not only his downward spiral out of the points lead, but his career as well.

Camtheman 33 The reason I say it is a bad season is because it is a lot like Brad Keselowski’s 2013 season, Gordon was winning race after race in 2007 and it looked like he had the tittle raped until Jimmie caught lightning in a bottle and beat him. It was also the first season he went winless in his entire career and was barely a factor in the chase.

2008 wasn't too bad other than the zero wins part. 13 top fives, 19 top tens, and 4 poles isn't too shabby. If not for the early wreck in the fall Talladega race and a blown motor at Phoenix, he would've finished 3rd in the points. He had top five cars in both events. 2010 was pretty good during the first half of the year and then he struggled to finish inside of the top ten alot after Watkins Glen. In two of the final three races he finished 37th. He would go winless again. If I had to pick a bad season for Gordon other than his rookie season and 2005, 2010 would earn my vote.
