I asked one of the guards in a town if we could also throw stuff at the criminals in pillories as we where new to the town, and the town did not allow any mischief. the guard said yes, so I threw a magic pebble (in our game the pebble still looks like a pebble). proceed to crit on AC roll. uh oh... roll for damage 12+2... UH OH... "You throw a pebble, the guard you asked if you could Is quite focussed on you. as your pebble flies through the air it picks up more and more speed in the small amount of space between you and the pillory. It starts to burn and glow as if it's a small meteorite. A Massive bang can be heard through the town. as the dust settles, the already badly wounded criminal and pillory are nowhere to be seen, except for a thin red smear on the wall behind him. the guard grabs you, the others rush in, put a bag over your head, and take you away to the mayor's house."

So, you have your choice of offensive cantrip. You have Eldritch Blast, a bolt of pure arcane destruction. Frostbite, an incantation of icy energy that envelops the enemy in cold rot. I like this spell because it allows you to get a usable ranged weapon almost anywhere that you can share with others easily. I can see a druid making a lot of ammo for a second character that can fire more stones in a turn than you can. It's also useful because you can get 3 attacks from one spell and end up with two turns where you get both a magic attack and a bonus action.

Something i did with this spell was 1. Have very sticky pebbles(coat it in glue perhaps) at the ready 2. Cast it on 3 of the pebbles. 3. W8 for the glue to mold. 4. Throw one pebble which now has two more glued together. Needless to say the dm chuckled a few times and banned this interaction.

I actually used this spell as the DM. I had the party cross a 120 ft rickety bridge with two outcroppings high up on either side. I then had two Kobold Scale Sorcerers cast it on their bonus action while they took their action casting spells at the party and on the regular Kobolds turns they would hurl the stones at the players crossing the bridge. It made for a very fun use of the spell and a fun encounter for the players who were getting pelted with 6 stones a turn plus Firebolts from the Scale Sorcerers. I also just realized, and this would need to be okayed by the DM due to magic stone specifically saying it can either be thrown or used in a sling but, you could take your Bonus Action and cast Magic Stone and then as your Action use the 1st Level spell Catapult to throw the pebble. The combo attack would do 1d6 + your spellcasting modifier + 3d8 bludgeoning damage. As a first level character assuming your spellcasting modifier is a +3 that is average 20 points of damage. That is pretty good damage for a first level spell, as long as it hits.

GREAT USE! and a funny story as well! This has got to be one of my top 5 favorite Cantrips, and your combo it also pretty good too! I've always been a fan of putting the magic stones in a jar, and using Catapult to launch the jar haha! 3(1d6+SpellMod)+3d8

How about Magic Stone plus Tiny Servant (3rd) spell? Basically you animate a tiny object that lasts for 8 hours non-concentration so you use one and your little buddy uses one. The cool thing is you gain TWO EXTRA little buddies per spell level, now you can launch all three using the Tiny Servants. that leaves you open to cast spells and since Magic Stone is a bonus action it still works.
@zwordsman
@zwordsman 4 жыл бұрын
One big note is, that due to the wording. anything holding iit can make said spell attack roll. Thus. the magic stone is giving the ability to attack with it. So. Stuff like Homunculus, Familiars, NPCs you're protecting can all use it. Meaning for a bonus action, your familiay can fire magic stones from your shoulder. Or if it has enough hands, it could take them and fly off with them. etc.

It technically doesn't specify that you can't throw all three at once, it says in the handbook "You or someone can make a ranged spell attack with one of the pepples by throwing it or hurling it with a sling". It doesn't say only one pebble can be thrown, it says, one of the pebbles, that could by a far stretch be interpreted as the option of more than one. It’s very hard to make good use of after Level 5 where characters get Extra Attacks or other Cantrips scale. So the best ways are 1. bypassing resistances because it makes the damage magical, 2. Getting three minions to throw them for you each round, 3. Give it to or be a Rogue with decent Sneak Attack and a Sling (again to bypass resistance or immunity). Everything else tends to fall behind in damage quickly and feel like a waste.

I've thought of an excellent alternative use for this. DM's approval required Depending on how big your DM allows a "pebble" (I view it as them being able to fit in 1 hand together), then you could keep a stone in your hand, use a bonus action to make it magical, and then use your action to make a melee spell attack with it, dealing 1d6 + cha magical bludgeoning damage as a melee attack, which is mildly better than a dagger that does 1d4 + stat non-magical piercing I say it's balanced because you can't then use your bonus action to attack with a 2nd light weapon in your other hand, unless you made the stone magical on a previous turn.

Since throwing an ordinary stone has 20/60 range and deals 1d4 damage (as an improvised weapon) And throwing a magical stone has 60 range, deals 1d6 damage + my spellcasting ability modifier (SAM) it makes me believe that imbuing it: makes it max range, adds SAM, and increases the damage die by 1. So firing an arrow tipped with a magic stone would be like firing an ordinary arrow, but with max range, increase the damage die by 1, and with my SAM in damage, with all damage being magical piercing. So if your dm does allow you to catapult a magic stone (if a 1lb stone still counts as a pebble), it would deal 3d10 + SAM magical bludgeoning damage. And it would hit if your ranged spell attack beats its AC. And if it dodges, the stone continues as if it were always normal. But what I need to know: how does this interact with spell-slinger? I think throwing it gives it 120 feet range (since I use a ranged spell attack to throw it), but firing an arrow wouldn't change.

The head of the arrow doesn't actually effect the flight. As long as it has fletching, even an arrow without a head flies fine. The head is just there so that it actually punctures and damages what you're hitting because of the additional weight, shape, and hardness of the head. They even make wooden headless arrows. As the damage is applied magically, it doesn't really matter how hard it hits, or how much it weighs, or whether it's shaped to a point. Plus, a miniscule pebble lodged on the tip of a wooden arrow won't effect the flight path, this is almost solely determined by the fletching of the arrow. From a purely physics based argument, there's no reason you can't do this. If you'd like to make rule against it as a GM, realize that arrows are much harder to come by, and have higher barriers to use. The benefits for having arrows, is that you get more range, not more damage, as this is solely determined by the spell. The downsides are that you require martial weapon training and access to a bow, which means that not all allies will be able to use them at will. The ammo is significantly more difficult to collect and manage, as pebbles are essentially free, while arrows have a gold cost. Not to mention the downtime it would take to add the pebbles to the individual arrows.
@gunhead7159

So I just recently started with the goal of making a warlock that doesn't spam Eldrich Blast. So I added this spell in. It goes like this. Turn 1: Bonus action cast cantrip throw one pebble for 1d6+mod damage. Turn 2: Throw one as your attack action and the other as your bonus action with two weapon fighting. Two weapon fighting allows anyone to use their offhand to attack using a light weapon or throw it with the thrown property. Since Technically these are tiny pebbles they would be light and thrown. So you can in theory do 2d6+(mod*2) On turn 2. or If you do a hexblade and use a Short sword you could attack and throw each turn. The DM ruling though normally the offhand attack don't use the mod for damage. but its a spell attack so it does use the mod as part of the spell. its that line of having your cake and eat it too. Are you saying it is a ranged attack with your offhand using a light weapon with the thrown property thus you get to throw it as your Bonus action. OR its a spell attack and you get to keep your mod damage.

So edit on this. After talking to a friend of mine he argued that items “lobbed” to attack are normally an action. For example vials of acid or holy water or grenades are actions to throw. Since a pebble is not a weapon with a proficiency I would say it falls under the lobbed item category and not a light or thrown weapon thus unless you got a feat that gave you proficiency with improvised weapons. You cannot use the spell in tandem with two weapon fighting.

Can you imbue the stone with magic and also throw it (both events as bonus action) or is only the first part a bonus action (and you have to throw the stone as a normal action)? Thanks

A halfling once used the sling to kill a Goliath in one-shot and then he became a king until he was betrayed by this one asshole named Gideon.

can't you just take all 3 pebbles, insert them into a litlle bag and shoot the bag with the a sling into someone face as a special ammunition? form what i understand the only limitation is that you have to trow them but there is not much of a specification of how many at once you can and you still have to prepare the bags (i know, it's not a gigantic ordeal but it's not something you can do in battle without wasting time). It would be fun instead of spamming ultra boring eldrich blast over and over.

The spells specify states that it is initiated as a spell attack using one of the pebbles.

Now…it says you can throw 1 pebble at a time, but if you put all three in a vial, then catapult the vial, you’re not throwing 3 pebbles at once…you’re just catapulting the vial that happened to have 3 pebbles in it. Or at least that’s how I’m going to approach it and see if it passes the sniff test…lol It’d be 1d6 better than catapulting a vial of acid…and much cheaper!!

What if you use catapult spell on the magic stone It would be the 1d6 + spell modifier and have the 3d8 bludgeoning from catapult. Would that work I've never played dnd

Stupid artificier thought. Spend 3 rounds magic stone producing. then use the lv 5 animate spell. Have them throw the stones for you for 10x 1d6+Mod. Much tasier than the normal animated object storm of 1d4+1. and visually its very neat. Good opening moment if you can sneak into posistion and set it up. Then after that first round-they throw sontes. the rounds after normal flood of object attack

Haha I love where your heads at buddy! The only real problem would be that when the spell is cast again, the original stones lose their magical properties!

imagine having a party of 5 people with all having this cantrip all put their pebbles into the warlock goliaths hand and he just straight up smashes them into the enemy (or throws them in point-blank distance into their faces) for a whooping 15d6 + spell modifiers of damage

This spell is garbage. You have to use your bonus action AND your action to make an attack for a measly 1d6 dmg. Any other dmg dealing cantrip is better.
