Break the wheels on your wagon while your exploring so it can’t be easily stolen. Me d them when you get back. Manacles with no key or lock. Break them, me d it back over the creature. No lock to lock pick with thieves tools. Break a coin or some other inconspicuous small object to give half to a friendly NPC during times of intrigue and secrecy. When you meet up again, have the NPC produce the other half of the object. If mending works to unite the halves, you can be reasonably sure the creature is the same creature. If the halves do not, the creature should be considered with suspicion, could be disguised or a shapeshifter sent to get into out of your party. Can be used to easily hide small objects or secret notes inside of objects that would be difficult to manufacture in that way. Perhaps a hollow ball bearing mended with the information inside. Could be used over substantial amount of time to put shattered or torn objects back together.

I imagine that you could repair the wax seal on a diplomatic document's envelope, after simply reading the contents or even replacing it. Also you could put together a document that had been ripped to shreds, though this could take multiple castings.
@ChancesSpellbook5 жыл бұрын
I would 100% agree with that! Potentially you could break a seal, replace the letter inside with a fake, and use mending to remove all evidence of tempering!
@justinterry88942 жыл бұрын
Their should be a higher level version of mending that can repair larger and more damaged items and after using certain spell slots even restore magical effects like seventh level or up.
@moukidelmar3 жыл бұрын
Mending is a crazy useful spell in the hands of anyone with good intelligence, wizards, artificers and forge clerics especially. Let's say a clockwork mechanism is destroyed by a barbarian's war hammer. Working one piece at a time a sufficiently intelligent character can mend what's broken and repair it giving the party access to that mechanism in future. This is crazy powerful when combined with horomancy (a real world study of clockwork atomita), because an artificer can enchant different parts of the mechanism before it is reconstructed to give it multiple magical effects.
@DustyTheKitty4 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if Mending could be used on a creature that would otherwise be an inanimate object, A mechanical, non-magical exterior to restore HP.

Mending warforged, artificer constructs, and the like : sure. corpse: I would say you could mend the body back to perfect condition, but someone needs to cast some sort of healing spell to get some life force back into that body.

Casting for the minute DOES require concentration.
@ChancesSpellbook5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't seem to mechanically need concentration, I think there is a strong argument that you need to be focusing on the object however.
@binolombardi5 жыл бұрын
Chance's Spellbook Any spell with a casting time over 1 action requires concentration to successfully cast. If interrupted you do not loose the spell slot. This is why you have to be careful when choosing when to ritually cast spells, it ends something you may already be concentrating on. Readying a spell with a casting time of one action to release before the start of your next turn requires concentration. Loosing this concentration does expend a spell slot as the spell has already been cast but you are holding it for an opportune moment. You also loose the spell slot if you do not use your reaction to release the spell before the beginning of your next turn.
@russellharrell27473 жыл бұрын
This isn’t the same as a spell that requires Concentration during the duration of the spell. So mending will not disrupt other Concentration spells. Obviously if you take damage and fail a concentration check during the minute it takes to cast Mending it will be disrupted, but this isn’t the same as a spell requiring Concentration to keep up.

Could you repair a half burnt note from a fireplace if the ash is still there? What about if you dropped an ink bottle and it broke? Would the ink be returned? Could a worn out pen or threadbare patch of cloth be repaired this way, extending the life of disposable commodities?

@dragonwing19823 жыл бұрын
After a battle take all that isnt nailed down and what ever needs to be repaired use mending on because I'm a warforge during our long rest I would have 2 hours to work on it then sell what ever you don't need or just want to for the gold. If your an elf you can have 4 hours to work on it and if I'm not mistaken if you have a spell focus you don't need the lodestones.

Drow paladin (who took the Oath of Redemption) after our first boss fight with a freaking black pudding, his executioner greatsword got fucked up by acid, he only hit the creature on the blunt end as to not do slashing damage. Enid, my moon druid, has the mending spell so she got to fix the sword without asking him why he's carrying that as his choice of weapon...kinda odd for a paladin.

You know mending because you think it might come handy to repair important items in your campaign. I know mending because I want to wear my armor under my vestments and repair them after combat. We are not the same.
@isaackarr65763 жыл бұрын
This cantrip kinda needs to be in the DM notes. Also keep an inventory of frail items roll a D8 whenever a PC takes damage with it on their person. In fact at low levels I advise avoiding coin treasure because of this cantrip.It's also advisable to let your players solve that problem with the bag of holding. After you introduce smashables add smashable magic items by saying it looks volatile and frail. The spell is cast by the breaker the arcana check would say. Just make sure villains and NPC's risk carrying occasionally too.
@bobwaka14 жыл бұрын
Does the spell require the object to be broken? For example you have a blacksmith craft a sword blade and you have a leatherworker or woodworker to make a hilt. Then you use mending to attach the two object together. Would that work or be pure DM choice?
@shadowstorm6573 жыл бұрын
Based on the way mending reads I would rule no. The object has to be together in the first place, as one object.
@username56063 жыл бұрын
New player! So with that disclaimer, here's my question. I have a bard character, and I haven't used any cantrips yet (spells and weapons - yes). And I know that success of spells and weapons require rolling dice, but do you roll for mending? And if yes, how does it... mends, when you roll 5 or 10 or 15 and so on. And is un-mending a thing? I can break things with that cantrip?
