Feat #79: Slasher (DnD 5E)

You’ve learned where to cut to have the greatest results, granting you the following benefits:
Increase your Strength or Dexterity by 1, to a maximum of 20.
Once per turn when you hit a creature with an attack that deals slashing damage, you can reduce the speed of the target by 10 feet until the start of your next turn.
When you score a critical hit that deals slashing damage to a creature, you grievously wound it. Until the start of your next turn, the target has disadvantage on all attack rolls.

That definitely makes a whip more beneficial with a 10ft range to hit with slashing damage to reduce an enemy speed.

I really like how at first glance, the damage type feats look interesting at best, but as time has gone on, people have more and mroe appreciated the value of all of them. Crusher and Slasher especially. even piercer has a place in Archer builds. and on the more gimmicky side, even magic classes like scribes wizard can make some interesting use out of them.

Picked this up with mobile feat and unarmed fighting style and played a Tabaxi Fighter/Rogue that decided to fight the Alpha Werewolf for control of the pack in unarmed combat. The party flipped out but after hitting 1 action with 2 attacks hit the action surge right out the gate for 4 attacks then, then dodging every attack made by the werewolf, then seeing his hits points reduced so low it was only going to take one more hit he submitted to me and such the pack. Everyone lost their minds as we all realized we know had control of a werewolf army.

That's pretty good. If the first part counts for Opp attacks you can cut their running short.

Played a RogueBarian in a one shot the other day using this feat and mobile. Assassinate gives you auto crits so it was a crazy opener of a round, but between mobile and slasher I could run wherever I want, Reckless attack, get sneak attack, then run away with +10 move speed and no opportunity attack from Mobile while reducing my targets move speed by 10. If that wasn't enough to outrun them I can bonus action dash if I felt an offhand attack wasn't going to do it. Didn't get hit once by anyone I reckless attacked because they couldn't hit me back and I would use hide actions or run behind cover so the ranged attackers couldn't get me either. Crazy good build and lots of fun.

Here me out: bugbear fighter w/ halberd and lunge pushing attack maneuver, giving 20-ft melee attack range, take slasher, hit enemies from far away and push them back when they get close, all the while lowering their speed by 10ft

as an arcane knight you can combine this with ray of frost and reduce the speed of a target by 20 feet until the start of your next turn, this is flat amazing. another thing is that reduces all speeds, this includes flying speed, climbing speed or swimming speed

You can also go scribe wizard and combo it with a zone spell and ray of frost to lock enemies down in a cloud of daggers, or next to a flaming sphere, or would it be slashing sphere with the scribe wizard?

I’m thinking about getting it on my conquest Paladin with shield master I can knock them down reducing there speed by half. Hit them with adv reduce the speed by 10 and if they try and move hit the again reducing it by 10 again. So on your normal foe with 30 feet the couldn’t move at all

If you combine this with a Samurai or Barbarian w/ a Butchers Bib, it gets really crazy. I want to say you have a 20%+ chance of criting.

Slasher should also work paired with the Torn Whip cantrip. Ranged spell attack that inflicts slashing damage

Ah, Dragonide, great thing really, less on armor costs, no need to dip into monk or Barbarian. Great for dragoborn wizards, rogues, or even Druids.

I think druids, Circle of the Moon would benefit greatly from slasher. They have great survivability in wild shape form and with some beasts having multi attacks with slashing damage, there is a higher chance to crit.

This would be a great feat for a Tabaxi Monk build, as I believe their claws attacks scale up along with Monk weapon attacks and unarmed attacks. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Champion fighter increases Critical chance with lots of hits. add a 5th hit with a short sword off hand bonus action attack? Take dueling & two handed weapon fighting? works both dex or strength pick rapier or long sword. Dex seems the better option to my mind for Ac, checks & ranged damage. Maybe the Rogue sub class that has that at least once guaranteed critical ability?

A whole feat just to have disadvantage to be hit, sometimes. Sure I'd rather have slasher than nothing, but it's just barely alright.

I guess a character that uses handaxes can also be ok. I don't see that much benefit of slasher's reduced speed for characters that go into melee range, so it's probably more useful for ranged characters and those with reach (polearm mastery + slasher seems very cool). Unfortunately, the only slashing thrown weapon that I could find is the handaxe but maybe your DM would allow to craft a better version..

tabaxi unarmed slashing is natural weapons, does not work with "unarmed strikes" unless your dm permits it.

“your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes”. That’s exactly what the ability says. Not all natural can be considered unarmed attacks yes but some like the Tabaxi and the Minotaur can be considered both a natural weapon and unarmed. Which is definitely an upside cause it can open up a lost of things u wouldn’t normally be able to do. Like be a Monk/Paladin and flurry of blows with your divine smite. Since u can’t normally divine smite with unarmed attacks cause they aren’t actually weapons which I feel like not a lot of people know (I know I didn’t until just about a month ago).

Pair this with crusher (both give half ASI) and polearm master. The bonus attack you get is bludgeoning while regular attacks are slashing.
