Those buyers who want to build equity by making improvements over time are in the best position right now. I suggest, and I've personally done this, you buy a mediocre home for an amazing price. Turn the mediocre into fabulous, then sell it in a few years. Take that appreciation and equity and roll it into a better home.
Owning a home is the only way you can get tax write-offs while paying down the loan for equity, and has the ability to increase in value over time (appreciation).
