The thing is, Chevy Chase isn’t really acting when he plays Pierce. Ask any cast member (besides himself, obviously), they’ll tell you he was an egotistical, flamingly racist manchild that whined whenever he didn’t get what he wanted, just like Pierce. The only differences are that those characteristics make for a funny character to laugh at, not have to actually deal with real-life; and at least Pierce had moments of endearment when he tried to do the right things for others (even if terribly misguided). Chevy straight cares about no one but himself.

It was a time where anything that had edgy humour was being attacked by the witless, studios got scared and just decided it was better to take anything “offensive” off their services. Bunch of fking cowards that didn’t have a clue what was actually offensive and what was just goofy fun. Example this brilliant episode, that in no way was actually doing anything offensive but showing Chang was just stupid. The racist character (Pierce) points out what he thinks is black face and it’s explained that’s it’s just Chang being way too into character as a Drow Elf. Chang’s character is killed off and the plot moves on.

Drow in canon were described having jet black skin, which was later changed to include dark grey, jet-black, and obsidian (purple tones) aka there isn't a single shade for them. Dark purple and grey are more widespread in art because they can simulate jet black skin whilst allowing artists to draw some definition.
