I'm always impressed by the beauty of Becker's style. Every kind of shot he played was wonderful, the serve movement, forehand, backhand, volley, smash, every shot. Incredible player. I miss him so much. Greetings from Rome Italy

No sigle player has been technically sound and with extraordinary skills of tennis as becker in his era. Whether it is serve & volley, backhand or forehand passing shots, drop valley, stop valley and even lofted shots becker is king and a complete tennis player with that killer instincts. Those days are gone.

Watch the differnce in the tennis balls. That was before ITF introduced hard rubber(circa 2002) and the third type of ball in the circuits. People wonder why serve and volley died. It was because of the hard rubber that slowed down the momentum after bounce. Took away the speed element of the serve and volley player. Then tennis became the ugly sport we watch now
@z1az285

Great point. This court was medium pace greenset. It was balanced in speed and as we saw had plenty of rallies and all court tennis, not endless baseline attrition. Perfect surface in my opinion and fair to both baseliners and attacking all court players. Shame really, they replaced all indoor supreme surfaces like this one with molasses slow hard courts + itf 3 Uber slow tennis balls which are painful to watch, much more than red clay which honestly appears to play faster due to itf-1 (faster) balls.

@@plasqar Sure, no problem but also remember that there were slight variations in speed from 1990-1995 at this venue. 1990 was medium slow but the other years were medium speed and favored all styles of play. Yeah, it's a pity they evolved into really slow hardcourts but they have played much faster in 2019,2020. That's a good thing, I think organizers are realizing that. But let's not also forget, equipment used today is much more powerful so clay court tennis with iITF-1 balls is much faster than the 80s-90s. I hope they strike a balance. Wimbledon is way too slow, not the rye grass it has a higher bounce but the same speed. Unfortunately the ITF- 3 balls are extremely slow.
@andreazonin
@andreazonin 2 жыл бұрын
@@z1az285 For me the court in this video is not medium speed at all, it's medium-fast. Look how much the players are running to catch the ball, then the bounce is pretty low. But I agree with you that hardcourts today are too slow, they should remake these mid-fast courts which brings more excitement to the sport.

I actually don't understand how simple the groundstrokes were looking, but the force of the hitting is even bigger then today. More entertaining than today for sure. Becker went pro in 1984, so by the 1990’s, he was already known in the world of tennis, and his 1990 trip to Wimbledon against Stefan Edberg was his third consecitive final versus his Swedish rival. Though he lost, he soon went to the Australian Open for the first time, defeated Ivan Lendl, and claimed the number one spot in the world. During 1992, Becker brought home seven titles, but in 1993, his personal life took a turn, and after a surprising marriage and a number of tax issues, Becker entered into a mid-career slump. He was able to recover from this by 1995, and once again found himself at Wimbledon. This time, however, though he beat Andre Agassi, he lost to Pete Sampras.However, Becker did win the ATP Tour World Championships against Michael Chang. Though the end of the 1990s was rocky for Becker, his colleagues greatly respected him, and even his rival, Sampras, said that Becker was the best player he had ever played. Throughout his career, Becker played best on indoor carpet and grass courts, and never won a tournament on a clay court. Chang is the youngest player of all time to win a Grand Slam title, which he received after winning the French Open at age 17 and 4 months. Chang is an American who is well known for his speed, and is seen as one of the all time best defensive baseliners.Throughout his career, Chang was in the top 10 of the world rankings, and he peaked at number 2 in 1996.

Your opinion is irrelevant. He is a tennis hall of famer. Yes, I agree he would have won a lot more if he had been more professional about his career, but he was one of the fiercest fighters tennis had ever seen. It's a shame his early success at Wimbledon was so counterproductive to his career

@@z1az285 Naturally my opinion is irrelevant. I'm not qualified to be on the court with him. However, my opinion is more sour grapes than anything else. I used to be a big fan of his. He just kept letting me down so much back in the early 90s. So I guess I developed this sour grapes mentality.

@@CheapHomeTech I understand totally. I too felt the same way about him sometimes but I ultimately realized he was a walking contradiction and a complex person. His career had so many ups and downs because his work ethic was phenomenal when he was motivated and inspired but not always. But his development was arrested because of his Wimbledon success. I wish he had found his last coach (who died recently) earlier in his career. His tennis was more precise and disciplined after that (1995-1996) but that's life. At least he didn't end up like Kyrgios but he could have won 10+ slams easily. Shame really.
