Putting Shadowheart’s “why does freedom have to feel like I’ve lost everything” over the reflection of your illithid form is such an incredible parallel. Well done
@LorphicTales11 ай бұрын
I had the same feeling when I chose the Illithid-Liberator route. That the price of freedom for everyone is the sacrifice of everything that you are. The soul. In the BG3 universe, to me, the soul is what's considered the true essence of a mortal's life and has the chance to reincarnate or experience the afterlife. To have it destroyed is to forfeit that experience.

Oh how I wish I could tell Shadowheart that freedom often feels like loss because it is often easier to follow someone who will enslave you. That real change takes time, and in between there is the void and doubt you have to overcome first to get there. That after you get your life together after the loss you can see clearly that the feeling of hopelessness wasn't there because you are doomed, but because for the first time in your life there is no one there to force you to follow any path you don't wish to follow, and a path not known feels like doom but it is true freedom.

I understand where you're coming and 100% agree. In my playthrough, the decision to lose her parents was her decision as I chose the option to have Shadowheart decide her parent's fate. "...I had learned better than to think of life as some simple tale, after all. There is no guarantee of happy endings, or true heroes. ... But, when I look on all we have achieved since, I wonder... perhaps it is not heroes we need. Only people who are willing to try." Honestly, reflecting on BG3, I feel like this is the overarching theme, for the player and the companions. All of the origin characters are struggling against something that they want to escape, both from the tadpoles and the other circumstances of their lives. They can either embrace what they've been fighting against, or they can continue to resist. As the game so poignantly puts it, "there is no guarantee of happy endings" but that doesn't mean there's any less reason to try. This game was a wonderful breath of fresh air.
@LorphicTales11 ай бұрын
Jaheira is a veteran in the Baldur's Gate franchise and, with age, has many wise words/advice that she can offer. I agree that this game is a breath of fresh air considering that actions have consequences and that the ending that you get isn't always a happy one. Despite all the time to prepare and grind, you just have to make the best at whatever cards you have. BG3 is a gem and I'm glad that it was made.

I agree. I played Spider-Man 2 when it came out and the quality of the storytelling doesn't compare with BG3 due to how it was a retelling of the same concept of the Spider-Man franchise and many other points. BG3 had a unique storytelling with many 'new' and memorable characters that became beloved. That's one of the few reasons why I believe BG3 deserves GOTY.
