I owe you a huge thank you for this video. I’m a 54 year old woman who is helping with the upkeep of my daughter and SIL’s land while he is deployed with the Army. I ran over some thick cord and wire that wrapped around the blades and had to remove the deck to cut off the cords. Your video saved me. I did not have to call for a John Deere repairman. I did it myself thanks to you!! Your instructions were completely clear and so easy to follow. Thank you so much! I feel so accomplished.

I am considering a new S240 as my next mower (currently running a GT 275 from the last century which has served me very well). One item of interest for me was removing and installing the mower deck, since I do it several times a year to clean it and sharpen blades.I was hoping to see how Deere had reengineered the deck to make it easier to detach and install, but ALAS! what they did has not done that - instead they cut costs by making it cheaper. #1 - spring pin clips are a bad idea, mainly because they are hard to remove and install (esp. when covered with dirt, grass, etc.) and they get lost easily. #2 - they did away with the swivel wheels on the corners so now you have to drag the deck out from under. #3 - the attachment arms are just cheaper and harder to remove/reinstall on both front and back - you demonstrated that in the video. I don't think we should have to pay premium prices to get something that serves the customer. Now I am having second thoughts.I feel sorry for the younger crowd who never had a chance to use real quality equipment.

Thanks for the video, it's been very helpful. Could you please help me understand which way the washers should face? The washers are cupped and shaped like a bowl. Should the inside of the bowl be facing the blades, or the outside of the bowl (if we think of it that way)? I am not able to find the answer online anywhere....thanks!

Brent, I appreciate your videos. I’m currently looking at/researching different JD models. My total yard size is .33 acres, but some of that is in the woods and I don’t mow in that area. But the portions I mow have some slopes, so I’m needing a mower that’s built a little more heavy duty and I think the S240 is going to fit that need. That 30-second oil change system in the 100 series seems to be a very polarizing subject with a lot of people, and I don’t see a lot of positive feedback about it. I get it. It’s a time saver for most home owners who just want to speed up maintenance, but I also see the better benefits of completely replacing the oil. Has there ever been any actual negative effects of the 30-second system reported by those who have done it over the last few years?
Great informative video, thank you. Would you have one, on attaching a snow blade to the S240?

I think my S240 needs a 24mm socket. The largest in my set is 19mm, so I'll have to buy one. I usually have the John Deere guy install new blades when he does the snow thrower changeover, but he forgot this year.

Thank you for the videos, I have been learning about the new S240 42" deck I bought in Feb 2021. I had ordered from my dealer the optional bagger kit and mulch control kit, but due to the storm in Texas, have been told that neither have even been made yet. Have you ever installed the lever actuated mulch control kit on the 42" deck?
@WesternEquipment3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have. It is a very easy install and once I get a mower that has the right deck I will do an install and post it to our other channel 247Parts. So go check out that channel and stay tuned. Thanks for watching!

The specs in my John Deere S220 42 in. deck owner's manual recommend 50 ft-lbs for tightening the mower blades. Seems kind of less than what I thought it should be. Do you recommend sticking to the manual, or taking initiative to increase to 65 or 70 ft-lbs? For now, I have them at 52 ft-lbs of torque. Thanks.
@WesternEquipment Жыл бұрын
The manual is usually the best way to go, but I don’t think an extra 10 lbs of torque would hurt.

I have a new set of mulching blades. What is considered the right and left side of the mower? I installed them from the perspective of the drivers left hand and right hand while they would be operating the machine is that right?

Yes, that is correct. It is always from the perspective of being in the drivers seat. Thanks for the comment!

JD doesn't level these decks to their own spec at the factory and the dealers are too lazy to do it. Even on this video the two threaded adjustment bolts ( @ 2:48) are only showing only a few threads past the nut. I removed both and adjusted them to .4 of an inch and moved the anti-scalp wheels down to their lowest position. Use a 6" scale to make your adjustments or a vernier caliber and not your eye balls. Also, the deck should have some rake, the front of the deck should be 1/4" lower than the back to prevent double cutting.
