I wanted to pin a couple of updates here thanks to some helpful comments! - Multiple people pointed me toward cut-resistant gloves for just this sort of carving safety. I will likely pick up a pair myself! - More alternatives to glass panes: --- Acrylic sheets at various sizes on Amazon --- Plexiglass cut to size from your local hardware store --- Acetate sheets (like for overhead projectors) --- Large plastic sheet sourced from a poster frame One thing I didn't mention in the video is that I found having a transparent panel with some thickness increased the visual quality of the wave texture against the coloured paper underneath. Having some distance allows for shadows and a better reflection and water effect overall. And don't forget to store these with parchment or wax paper in between!

You can use some wet/dry sandpaper around 220-320 grit down the sides of the glass. Use it wet so you don't end up with glass dust in the air. It'll make it less likely to cut you, remove some of the flaws that tend to act as break points, and make the cleanup with a razor a bit easier.

@5:00 cut resistant gloves are fairly cost effective, and absolutely worth looking in to if you're doing this sort of carving regularly. THEY ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROPER CAUTION, but they're a decent piece of preventative safety on top of being sensible and careful. Making sure your knife is properly sharp means you're using less force to make cuts as well, so stop and strop or hone your blade every dozen or so decent sized cuts, or when your blade starts to slow down when carving.

This video reminded me of a time I hold deep nostalgia for, playing with the Total Annihilation: Kingdoms map editor as a young lad having my first experiences with map making and modding the games I played, fitting all the neat tiles together and assembling tiny worlds just for myself to experience. The water and islet tiles were some of my favourites and one of the maps I spent the most time decorating was a castle flanked on three sides with a large horseshoe-shaped lake, with a small hamlet huddled among expansive fields of pumpkins and wheat, I must've spent a couple of hours just doing set dressing on a tiny sheltered lagoon among the fields surrounded by a dense cloak of pine trees with a little clearing where a couple of vagrants were camped. It probably wasn't a very good map to actually play but it didn't need to be, I probably spent more time in the map editor than I did playing the game.

I have my first batch of wilderness tiles drying from the initial mod-podge soil mix.. super excited to start laying in some static grass etc..
@raecheldoes Жыл бұрын
Yes gloss mod podge can also give a good water finish too! I just used gel medium because it holds its shape more firmly than gloss mod podge, but you can definitely get some good ripple textures with the latter. Let me know how the still water goes! Holy hand-grenades @raecheldoes this is such a fantastic video! The water texture is awesome, and you've explained the cliff/corner/curves/crawls so clearly here. I've been using this approach with corner and curve pieces for ages, but seeing how well cliffs and crawls work is going to have be magnetizing all my old tiles just to make it all work. PLEASE KEEP IT UP, you're forging gold with each of these videos!
@WilSisney Жыл бұрын
Also that freaking flocking strategy is brilliant! There's probably a better term for making adjoining tiles connect cleanly in a visual way, but I just call it tessellation. Getting physical tessellation is easy - you just have to make your foam join. Getting visual tessellation is SO hard and the flocking approach you use is blowing my mind right now.
@raecheldoes Жыл бұрын
Ahh! Thank you for such high praise!! I'm happy that my instructions came across clearly. If you like, rolled up masking tape also works well in adhering the tiles together too! It was easy for me to do magnets since I started with them, but I imagine if you've got a whole system it might be a beast to convert everything! Either way thank you again for your support and encouragement! My perfectionist tendencies definitely appreciate the specific compliments haha.

Hi! Also an RP Archive fanboy here! I've been thinking down a similar vein, but using acetate sheets/OHP transparencies rather than glass as they are cheaper and less breakable. I've also done a light dry brush of white on wave textures like this for a little foam, but perhaps that's more of a sea than a river texture.

This is very cool! A few months ago I found online wargame magazines from the early 80s and they had similar layout to this (but not a creative design like yours!). They put a blue piece of cloth underneath the terrain and that represented water. Super cheap, but I guess for the 80s, where wargames were just getting hyped up, it had to do! With that being said, I have a quick question: putting terrain on a cloth, will flush it together with no "space" in between the cloth and the terrain. But when creating these waves, since they height, did you find that the terrain is somewhat "floating" in the air since its being placed on waves that have height? - I hope I explained it well lol.
@raecheldoes Жыл бұрын
You know, there are still terrain-builders who will use long-fibre fabrics or rugs to be grass, so I'm not surprised it used to be used for water! But yes, with the gel-medium waves, there is a minor amount of space between the land on top and the water below. But honestly, it's so minor that from the side, you barely notice it. You can see a good example of the gap at 2:21. (And yes! I understood your explanation!)

Hey Rae'ch, whatcha playin'? Nice disguise spell you got there, but I can _sea_ through it. Really nice vid, I dig the modularity of the water layer. You could maybe try slapping some ledstrips under it, with a diffuser sheet for some glowing green poison river, or something. The water and the land tiles together look pretty cool. Keep it up! 👍

Uh oh. You've rolled too high on your insight there, _and_ your charisma with that pun! I like that idea for future swamps, acrid lakes, or maybe lava in the future. Thank you for the encouragement!

Fantastic video, one question: where do you get those tiny magnets from?? I can't find anything that small
@raecheldoes Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I source my magnets from suppliers on ebay! They're 3mm (diameter) by 2mm (height) N52 neodymium magnets. You can find quite a few suppliers on there. Also depending on where you live, RP Archive has magnet suppliers he works with that he lists on his website.

Awesome crafting tips, editing, and of course puns. There was no... dry humor in this one

Haha! I thoroughly enjoyed that play on words. Thank you for the compliments, too!

Have you tried using translucent acrylic plastic sheets instead of glass? Its safer and costs less. Just saying.
@raecheldoes Жыл бұрын
Funny you should ask because I definitely just picked some up! The glass was still cheaper but these will for sure last longer.

These are great! Are you on Twitch, as well? This would have made for a good stream.
