On 2005 Passat, in order to avoid removing the steering wheel and fooling with the air bag, I ended up sawing off the front screw tubes off the front of the bottom steering column cover, with a hacksaw blade. The result is it goes back together easily, with 2 less screws, and looks fine, but is just a tiny bit loose in front. I realized after removal that I could have just sawn off the left side screw tube and still gotten it out, and only lost one attachment point instead of 2. Oh well. Shaking didn't work for me the way it did for Randy, even though I magnetized my screwdriver and got the screws out, since the tubes the screws were in were in holes that, at least in the left side, did not allow removal without either removing the wheel or cutting off the tube. The tube does come out of the hole on the right after cutting off the left tube by moving the front of the bottom cover right, which you have to do anyway to clear the keyhole, but you have to go right a bit further to clear the screw tube.

I am getting 20 random electrical low power issues on all the major engine sensors and missfire due to ground low power issues. can the ignition switch be the issue??

Thanks for this Video, it is saving me bunches at the mechanic. In the midst of changing mine right now on my 99 Passat. (I took a break in 90 degree heat!) The wire seems burned-charred, as it is in this video, and I am wondering, if the wire needs to be changed? or electrical tape on it? So the same thing doesn't happen again. I Love VW's! (My first was a Karmann Ghia)

you had problems fitting the new switch because you need to turn the key to position 1 and also put the switch into position 1

had to do this on my 996 carrera 4s was way harder cause it was way up under the dash above the pedels but the part was a vw part looked the saem has yours

Turns out it’s not supposed to wiggle out, there are two plastic posts holding it in (that the screws go through) and when you “wiggle it out” it just breaks them. Steering wheel is supposed to come off first.

Would a faulty ignition switch mess up headlights, a/c and wipers functions.. all at the same time.?

Yes it does. Also your windows and radio. Anything that turns on or off with the key can be affected. Infact, the first sign of a bad ignition switch is usually your radio, headlights or windows not working even though you have power and your car runs.

Have a question...all the forums are saying my ignition switch has donw went out. My lights dont work blinkers dont work horn dont work windshield wipers dont work ...and ac dont work ...kinda all went out at the same time .....any ideas before i go buy this 60 doller part?

Jeffron Schaeffel check if your fuses are all good. And also there is a 50amp fuse under the steering wheel.

What year car do you have? Maybe your immobilizer is kicking in. For the early B5's (1998-early 2000's), there is no immobilizer in the key.

+klitoni1 Hi. Well, I am answering after one year ;) But lately we have issues like car doesn't want to start, or if it;s started after one second stops (is not choking). My fiancee discovered by accident that it happens only if you want to use the reverse gear (sometimes without it). So then you need to put reverse several times, and then switch to neutral and everything is ok. I don't know if this is related but our left stop light is not working, but first we will need to change the ignition switch. BTW We took our car to many mechanic guys and they couldn't find the answer. So we changed the battery, spark plugs etc. I hope the only problem is that ignition switch. :)

Symptoms can be bizarre, see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4DSo5Snr7NqftU . I suspected my ign switch when my fuel pump wouldn't activate, the fuel pump relay, fuse and 2 ECM fuses had no voltage on either side, but the fuel pump relay relay (there really is one) was working and active. Anyway, it turned out to be the computer needing to be reset. I accidentally discovered this when I disconnected the battery to be sure about the air bag as I removed the steering column covers, when I reconnected, it fixed itself, just in time for me to cancel my order for an ignition switch.

Easy enough to figure out it's an ignition switch issue. e.g. car won't start, won't turn off, no ACC position, windows/radio misbehaving.
