Just finished fixing my wife's EOS. The problem was EXACTLY like yours so not only have you saved us a bunch of money, I now have a couple of new small tools that I purchased to do the job. You're an absolute legend! What I did do though instead of the drill and screw extractor method was to use my multi tool with a metal blade to cut a slot in the head of those pesky bolts. I could then remove them with a flat blade screwdriver with very little effort. I also then replaced the bolts with standard hex key bolts. Cheers!

@@hardcore4476 I’m a builder so I just happened to have the bolts laying around in my shed. I got them originally from a fastener shop though. Pretty sure they’re M8’s. If you take the old bolt into a fastener shop or decent hardware/auto shop near you, I’m sure they’ll be able to match the thread and length with no trouble at all.

Great video! Concise. To the point. Found exactly same piece of metal. Left out bent spring, long rod, various bits and pieces under the cover on the side. Works better than new. No known issues so far. Thanks! Note to remove flat screws: My angle drill is air and I didn't have hose enough to reach where car sat. I took column loose and pulled out a little. I took cordless drill and drilled small shallow hole in the middle of screws then used larger left twist bit. The screws spun right out. GM transmission pan bolts were perfect replacement.

For those looking to do this in Australia it's quite a detailed task. My car faught me at every steps and it took me about 6 hours. Some steps were different in my Jetta which is probably an Australian right hand drive thing, so took a bit of problem solving. The steps do work and my ignition works and feels the same as before, so be patient and search the comments for answers if you get stuck.

I managed to pull the aluminum splinters from the mechanism, without removing anything other than the ignition cylinder, and the parts that is accessible from that side. No removal of the steering wheel, only the plastic surrounding the stem. For me it was possible without drilling the thing on the side out. Easy 20min fix + YouTubing😂. I had the exact same failure, little half moon piece came out in my hand. Was trying to drill out that little cap on the side and it started spinning. The drilled a little sideways into the hole I’d started and the spring came out, so i didn’t bother removing it and the plunger, just put it back together. Great vid and thanks for the help!

YOU ARE DA MAAAN! I did exactly the fix u shared here and it works! I even follow another video tips on dismantling the cylinder since my mk6 setup is more like the tiguan (no bottom chip box). I did not have to take out the steering wheel. TIP FOR THOSE WHO DISCONNECTED THE NEGATIVE BATTERY PLUG: you might face a problem of the car starting but dies a second later. This is due to ecu memory not reading well. Drain all power from the ecu by unplugging the negative first and then the positive battery plugs AND connect those 2 plugs together to drain remaining power left in the ecu. You can also use 1 side of the jumper cable to connect the unplug plugs. Leave it drain for an 1 hour or so, then connec the battery plugs again, starting with the positive and follow by the negative plug. Now test if you can arm the alarm. If so, you can now disarm the alarm and start the car. Be careful when handling the battery plugs. NEXT: u might get a steering sginal when the car is switch ON like nornal, reset the steering wheel by turning the wheel RIGHT first, slowly all the way and then turn it to the LEFT slowly all the way. The steering wheel signal light will reset right after. I WISH I COULD GIVE YOU A BIGGET THUMB THERE BRO! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Thank you for that video, i just finished the same job, 2012jetta, my previous 2006jetta had the same problem a few years ago and i ended up ordering the whole ignition lock with the switch from vw, they ship it from Germany cause there are codes in the switch matching the key, so i had to wait 2 weeks. I have never serviced one of these before, though I have been doing service on most makes of car locks since 1979. On this ignition type, I have always had client order a new lock cylinder by VIN, and a new lock bolt housing. You covered this all quite well, and the videography is excellent. Thank you for teaching me something that actually is a heck of a lot easier than servicing a Honda or Toyota. The broken piece jamming the works was shaped IDENTICALLY to the one you show. I could not find where that piece of die-casting came from.

I was able to do mine too! Torx 55 will remove steering wheel nut nicely (instead of specialty 12 point VW tool). Control board needs at Torx T8. I used my dremel with the dremel flex cable and a drill bit to drill the holes in the two screw for an easyout to fit in and unscrew them. Tapping the easy out with a hammer while gently trying to rotate it worked to loosen them. Thanks for the videos of removal and fix. I would not have tried it without it.

If the lock won't turn to the on position when you want to repair the lock, all you need to do is simply hit the lock with a hammer on the side so that the broken piece inside will move allowing the lock to turn. I guess u forgot to mention that.

Thanks for your sharing. I repaired my Caddy's barrel however after 3 weeks had the same problem. My car was 12 years old. Now I replaced the barrel with a new one. My advice is to renew the barrel part since it seems to reoccur due to metal fatique.

Get some m8x40 Allen head bolts to replace the shear bolts. If your key is stuck like mine was, I found once it's off the car, if you bash the whole unit into a bench while turning it will eventually come out of place and you can get the lock out 😊

PLEASE PIN THIS COMMENT! I have some hints for anyone going through this issue! The first of which is that it is not entirely necessary to remove the steering wheel for this project. If you turn the wheel 90 degrees you can access the screws necessary to get at the ignition cylinder. Second is that if you are having trouble getting the locking cylinder out even after aligning the points, no matter how much you try, take an extremely small diameter drill bit (3/32 or less) and insert it in the pin hole, and VERY slowly advance the bit, it will work its way into the latch and allow you to pull out the locking mechanism. Finally, when you are reassembling the ignition cylinder after removing the debris, make sure that the metal pin that goes along the left side is still inserted. It prevents over rotation and without it your problem WILL NOT be solved. Save yourself the headache, and please ask me questions if you’re watching this video and struggling!!!

Mine went full blown stupid and it didn’t do anything like that shaft in the cylinder broke in two! First I lost power to the steering so I put it by the garage and the next day the mileage lit up when door opened but when I put the key in and went to start it the dash went blank and nothing happened! Anyway so I got everything done and put the first part in with the rod and now I can’t get it back out. Always something! So I’ve been looking for a video that explained how it would go together and found this! Now I just got to get it back apart and follow the video! Again thank you for this!

Hey dude, this vid was very informative, it is legit DIY GOLD. Funny enough I had the same issue, even the same dang old piece of metal, shame shape, same crack and all. I figured it's due to the aluminum ceding to the stress of one tiny (overengineered and unnecessary) safety pin and spring that goes on the bottom half of the wheel locking mechanism. It pushes hard enough to fatigue the aluminum assembly right in front of the spindle, so therefore that debris PLUS the now loose pin and spring jam up the spindle and wheel lock mechanism due to being dancing around in there. Additionally the stupid pin and spring behind the plug AND the steel rod that runs along the bore of the assembly create a recipe for disaster. However I figured out that I did not need to remove the steering wheel to unmount the ignition assembly, by turning the steering wheel and using the big hole in it, you can access the tiny screw that holds the control module AND the clip in the middle (Wheel being upside down). Using the punch and a small hammer one can make quick work of those pesky sheared screws, it took less than 15 mins to remove them from the top with the steering wheel on. Sending good vibes your way fam. PS EDIT: To remove the ignition switch, after lining up the hole and the dot, it is convenient to use a paper clip thick long needle bent in an L shape, with the keyhole facing towards the sky, a good solid tap to the under table will pop it right off.

Really had a few of them that wouldn't still let key out of housing. .even with proper techniques. Had to cut the housing carefully apart ..especially if you don't want to change to new key and lock cylinder and door lock.... if you run into this. .you nust cut it carefully. To do so cut it in half. . Then use saw or cut off wheel to make slice going long ways. Start at cut end and slice it going towards key. . But dont cut all the way just about half inch from cut end. .the score it. A bit towards key. But not through . The take chisel and crack housing. And carefully. Break it open to get lock cylinder and key out without breaking it. . Had a few that this is only way to keep key the same

You can use a 1/8" Solid carbide bit, drill hone in center, then bind a screw into the plug/cap, and pry it out with a pair of plyers sideways.

Question - How did you install the old key cylinder into the new ignition housing? I turned the insides of the new housing with a screwdriver before installing the old key cylinder. I can get the key cylinder back into the housing, but it will spin backward until a stop point, and will spin forward without ever actuating the steering lock. 2:01 I'm struggling bad. So my old key got stolen, I have a different key and that keys ignition lock (immo deleted). I used a screw driver to line up the half circle with the dot to put it in the "on" position. I can tell the paper clip is going all the way in but the lock won't come out

I didn’t have to drill it out… Just push up and down on the top piece that goes up and down while shaking it. I think this would work. I’m putting it back together now. Thanks for this video… wish I had seen it before I just spent $600 to have a mobile locksmith come fix it

I had the same problem with the key not turning, and did this. The safety screws are a bitch to get out, but with a sharp flathead screwdriver and a hammer, I was eventually able to get them out with some persuation. However, my key was not able turn to the point where I could get the key barrel out, so if you have the same problem, take an angle grinder and cut the whole thing in two ( just make sure you cut below the key barrel) then I was able to turn the key and get the barrel out. (Golf tdi mk6)

Dang this is clutch af mine failed at the exact same spot but I didn't remove the entire cylinder screws just used some needle nose to pull everything out... thanks again

I bought a new switch and put it in the new one. Good thing because I dismantled the old one trying to see if I can fix it in case i need it again and it is really tricky to put back. Ended up with an extra spring in the end 😂

great vid. man. I couldn't find any broken piece. the car start normally on the side of electrical switch and on the side of mechanical barrel. Ofc. with screwdriver. after puzzling i realized that the ignition lock was the main suspect. that's what I thought. However it did worked for sometime. sometime not😂. so I bought new one. again I had the same issue as the old one. I decided to buy new ignition barrel just for the internal parts so I can use them with the old one. Well, I did that and the car started fine. I was happy again. But after one week I got the same old problem. The car won't start with key in. I've got 4 key's non would work. Any idea what could be the problem? Thank in advance.

how do you remove the top pins? i saw a video where they smack the top pins with a hammer and punch. This is for removing the ignition from the starting column.

Thanks for the video! I've just taken mine out but I'm struggling to get the tab out. I've drilled a 2.5mm hole through the center and now it just spins. I've tied to wedge an Allen key in through the hole to try pry the tab out but it won't budge!

Edit: I used the dremel to cut a slot into the housing just next to the tab to allow it enough room to pop out. All working now! What a great video!

Didn't need to drill that pin out on mine, just pulled the barrel part out then lifted the middle section out sliding it back off the pin.
