I use clear tubs that dips and take-out come in. I just poke holes with a soldering iron. I also cut off clear plastic bottles to the right height and poke holes for smaller pots. For propagating succulents and seed starting, I use old Keurig cups from the office. Not clear, but they already have a hole in the bottom! None of these plastics are reliably recycled so I figure this is better than putting them in the recycling bin.

I do love the moisture meter, definitely a game changer. But the little soldering iron is an unnecessary buy - just get a nail or a screw, hold it over an open flame like a candle until it's hot, around 20-30 seconds and poke/melt a hole through that way = )
@kbm4409Ай бұрын
I do that😂😂😂😂😂
@crispian67Ай бұрын
For sure, re. the moisture meter, esp. the handy 3in1 types (moisture/light/PH). For anyone with a massive potted plant family, using a soldering iron would be the easiest solution. Plus, there's little risk of accidental burned fingers 😂 Not a bad tool to have around either as it can be used for other tasks too 👍
@SheffieldMadePlantsАй бұрын
I used to do that but you need to get a flame going and all that. Now I just plug this thing in and done
@cassthompson3386Ай бұрын
Yeah, maybe if you just had one random pot you needed to make a quick hole in.....but that's WAY too much hassle if you have more than one hole to make and if you do this often. You can literally get a soldering iron for like 8 bucks. Just plug it in and your done.

Yep, clear pots is the way to go. Only issue really is the available sizes. Also bottom watering to help prevent gnats. But if you want to get rid of gnats you have to attack all of their life stages: spraying neem oil diluted for adults, glue traps, and keeping the top 1 cm dry so they dont like it. A layer of diatomaceous earth or pumice can help and it also works as mulch.

My sister-in-law has started using clear pots. I sometimes use red solo cups (normal and shot sized) when propagating. At first I was heating a nail in a candle flame to put drainage holes in them. When I was working on another plant project using empty soda bottles I found that method to be hard on my fingers. My sister-in-law suggested a wood burning pen. It works so much better than a fire heated nail!

I am using clear containers (yep, no pots harmed in my household, lol) since the beginning of my house plant journey, which started in July 2024. The main reason in my case was the fear of killing my plants as soon as I get them home 🤭 as well as I wanted to be in control and have access to roots anytime I wanted/needed. And, of course, because I love to watch my plants to grow. Most of my plants are in plastic drinking cups or transparent dessert cups and I use yogurt cups (among other things) as cachepots 🤣
@theminimalistninjaАй бұрын
I switched all my plants to transparent pots and LOVE it! I have a small collection so it was easy 😀I can only get them up to size 21cm though so those that need a little more space are still in opaque pots 😇

I've started upcycling transparent plastic cups I get from buying smoothies. I didn't know that there were actual transparent pots for intended for plants. I'll still upcycle those plastic cups, they're nice for when I intend on transplanting something but I do like the look of those larger pots. Getting reliable moisture checks has been a pain.

I loved the information about a pot holding water in one part and drying the other . I have a Ficus Elastica that had to be very dry but the water meter showed very moist . I definitely learned a lesson on large pots holding moisture in the wrong places. I have re-potted the rubber tree in a plastic nursery pot . He is seems very happy . I used to propagate plants as gifts and instead of buying pots I made them by cutting the bottom off of clear plastic bottles then using a drill or a soldering iron to make holes in the bottom. I had an explosion of fungus gnats this spring when I thought I would use a little bit of potting mix to start some seeds when I ran out of my sterilized seed starting mix 🙄 boy was that a big mistake! I finally had to buy some mosquito dunks and dissolve them in water to water my plants with. Didn't hurt my plants at all but that is the only thing that killed the larvae and stopped the life cycle of those pains in the bum. Took about 2 weeks to finally get rid of them all. Now I keep Zevo lights plugged in my kitchen and plant room just in case something slips by me. That will catch them. I also have those yellow sticky pads in my plants (I heard they were attracted to yellow)

If the roots are green they have chlorophyll and need to be exposed to light. Water from the bottom. Don't poke holes into the top of the soil, you'll disturb/kill nitrogen fixation bacteria. Water/feed seasonally. Less in fall/winter. More in spring and summer. (depending on where you live)

I have a soldering iron, but prefer to take an ice pick, a translucent or clear plastic drinking cup, a small fire source (a candle with flame or a single burner propane stove mounted atop a small can of propane) and go outside. I heat up the tip of the ice pick with the flame and when the pick starts to glow from the heat, I poke the bottom of the cup to make sure some 3mm diameter holes. Voilà! Small see through pot. (In October on the Texas Gulf Coastal area, hurricane season and all the associated gear for power outages are still out till November.) My problem is finding big pots for my gigantic monsteras, philodendron & ficus trees. On Etsy, the largest see thru plastic pots I have found are 12”, or 30 cm diameter at the top.
