This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dr. Crum says the biggest game changer is “YOU, by harnessing the power of your mind." She explores scientific results that show the influence of the mindset on the body, and how changing the subjective mindset produced different outcomes. Dr. Crum's work is inspired in part by the placebo effect, and has implications that stretch far beyond the realm of medicine.
Dr. Crum is a professor, psychologist, and researcher investigating how mindsets affect health and behavior.
Dr. Crum's research focuses on how changes in subjective mindsets-the lenses through which information is perceived, organized, and interpreted-can alter objective reality through behavioral, psychological, and physiological mechanisms. Her work is, in part, inspired by research on the placebo effect, a notable and consistent demonstration of the ability of the mindset to elicit healing properties in the body. She is interested in understanding how mindsets affect important outcomes outside the realm of medicine, in the domains of behavioral health and organizational behavior.

i know a few people who speak just like her. it's natural to them notice its consistent! nervous people usually change as the speech progresses, but she remained like that to the end.

From the way she articulated her speech whilst holding a strong composure on stage, I would say (in my mindset) she appears to embody an excited energy with pure passion for her work and findings, rather than a nervous disposition or lack of confidence. She’s clearly Pumped!

Very true, I started investing before the pandemic and that same year I pulled a profit of about $750k with no prior investing experience, basically all I was doing was seeking guidance from *ROCHELLE DUNGCA-SCHREIBER* who's a guru in the game, you can be passively involved with the aid of a professional.

Yeah, she's nervous. Who wouldn't be?!?! I admire her for feeling the fear and doing it anyway. How courageous! No matter what negativity you find in this comment section, rest assured that you treaded on ground that few of us would attempt and did a great job. I thought she wasn't used to speaking too loudly, and that's why her voice sounded like that. Honestly, it was getting on my nerves, but then I read this comment and reflected on my own experiences like this and I kept watching. So yeah, it takes courage to go out there are give a talk like this one. Great talk

I love how she is nervous, but is owning the whole thing. She's not talking to fast, or pausing heaps. Still delivering all the information really well. I learned a lot! She's proving mind over matter here. Great knowledge.

I noticed many comments below about her quivery voice. I believe she was just nervous. Perhaps she wasn't accustomed to speaking in front of many people and nerves can do that to you. I googled her name and found that this ted talk was from 3 years ago, but I found one from just a few months ago, and the shaky voice is gone. She has become accustomed to public speaking, and I'm so proud of her! She clearly is making a difference and loving it! Good on her! We are all capable of such things if we have the right mindset. :)

This might be the best TEDx Talk I have seen, thus far. It’s well written, as are many others, but the way that she delivers the speech and information is incredible. Hearing the nervousness in her breath while delivering such a powerful and informative message really adds to this speech. She is actively doing what she is speaking about and putting mindset over fear/doubt. Great job.

She’s nervous but doing it anyway. Wow! Lessons: Never allow fear paralyze you Go ahead, do it afraid, hands trembling, feet shaking but keep on your motion. I ❤️ her, she’s a clear definition of “I CAN’T BE STOPPED”. Only if we can all approach life then s way! Great presentation here 👏 👏 👏

Imagine how much media affect us with all the ads and bad news every single day, they are constantly triggering the placebo effect, but not in a good way. If our society is more aware of this, we could use this in our advantage to have a better quality life!! Great talk!!

@Lorenzo Gateau honestly this is a really good idea and I think it’d help me a lot to do the same. However, I’m a bit worried about being blatantly uninformed, but I think that I’m exaggerating the level of “uninformedness” (can’t think of a better word lol) that I will be in my head. I’m curious if you feel you ever miss the *important* news, or if the real important things you’d want to hear about come to you just from unintentionally hearing about it in some other way? Also I’d love to hear any extra tips or strategies you think are relevant if you’d be willing to share them! :) I tend to get somewhat addicted to checking the news when I have time and I’m wondering if/how you kicked the habit?

Her performance of her speech is based on her topic. If you can change your mindset and keep control of your mind, you can do literally everything you thought you couldn't. She is battling great fear,doubt, and anxiety on that stage, because doing a Ted talk in front of a large audience is intimidating. But she toughs it out and gets more comfortable and more in control. This is inspirational, salute to this woman and her courage to change and control her mindset in a intimidating situation.

Wonderful speech Dr.Crum! Thank you so much, it’s amazing how this few minutes of your educational video have changed my life. My husband was overweight by more than 100Lbs, using some of your data, I designed a psychological assurance plan to help him loose weight. When he gets dress daily I assure him that he most be eating a lot less, because he has dropped significantly weight. To begin this, I bought a mimic of his daily outfits one size bigger, cut all labels and washed them to make them look used. Hid away the real ones and one morning after a few days of good encouragement he noticed that his clothes were loose. He looked at himself different, his bp is more controlled, getting rid of his diabetes, he has lost 30 pounds so far. Our kids encouraged him too ,we are getting him healthy again:) this worked better than anything we have tried over a span of 20 years!!! Thank you so much!!

i remember when I shifted my whole routine and mindset in college. I started journaling, meditating, and writing down my gratitudes. That shifted my whole mindset. I felt like my mind was way more optimistic. A change in mindset changes everything

Ashley leesman Truthfully a long time. Probably a few years. I started small though. First it was meditating once a day for 10 minutes, then it was doing stream of consciousness journaling, and then filling my time with positive friends and experiences.

This may be my favorite TED ever. She did a great job period, even tho she was nervous. I noticed her nervousness was nearly gone after she showed the stress video. She had time to collect herself and say “you’re owning this” and it frees her. Awesome job.

I can relate to her a lot. Im not nervous in my own mind. But my body gets really nervous when public speaking. Short of breath, nervous voice, shaking but my mind is 100%. Its so weird. I can tell thats whats happening here.

actually this is quite natural in some people, notice she does it to the end, nervous people will change their tone of voice even if it's down to the end. this is the same placebo effect she is speaking about, we perceive that she is nervous because of the way she sound, now if this was and experiment, with three other speakers, you would not have said that she was nervous. because of her voice. but some people's voices are naturally so,

She’s nervous but doing it anyway. Wow! Lessons: Never allow fear paralyze you Go ahead, do it afraid, hands trembling, feet shaking but keep on your motion. I ❤️ her, she’s a clear definition of “I CAN’T BE STOPPED”. Only if we can all approach life then s way! Great presentation here 👏 👏 👏

Truly fascinating. My mother was a strong advocate of developing and maintaining positive mindset. Damn, it's only 50 years later and I'm finding out she was right all along! Great, simple advice. Love it!

Notice how she sounded more confident towards the end. Love how she still delivered well despite being nervous. Once you change your focus to the message, her quivering voice wouldn’t even matter. One of the best contents I’ve watched.

Dr. Joe Dispenza has written a great book on this topic: "The Placebo Effect", giving the same (and many more) examples, but also explaining why the body reacts this way. This topic is truly fascinating!

I get nervous for two or three seconds at the beginning. But if it lasts longer than that, I lose my train of thoughts and deliver not so good. She did a really good job. Wow!

The fact majority of the comments are concerned about the presenter and her delivery, rather than the powerful message delivered and the hours of work she’s put into a 20 minute presentation is everything wrong with today’s society. Be positive guys and girls✌️

How could she be so nervous and remembers everything still? I can remember the first time I stood in front of about 50-100 people to present a speech, I had practiced for more than 3 months and the night before the day of the speech, I was presenting the same speech to my mum and I kept talking on and on like a car whose tire got busted in the middle of a straight free road without brakes. I finally got to present the next morning, when I got to the stage to see what it means to speak in public unlike the one I was presenting to my mum the other night, I knew at that moment that I've got myself into something big. I had prepared a 20 minutes talk or even more ladies and gentlemen, I didn't do up to 8 minutes on that stage because everything disappeared. Lines that I have fixed each position and time to where they come out took different directions on the stage that day, some went south and east, the others took the north and west direction. Respect from me to you Doctor, you did something great up on that stage.

The stress study was rather intriguing. It explains so much of how I react to certain situations. When highly stressed I am overly productive and can focus on tasks more clearly. However when stress is prolonged for years, it causes problems in my body. Eventually bringing in harmful effects until the stress is minimized.

I love Dr. Alia Crum... that small vibration in her voice, which people think are nervousness, to me is her signature style. And what an amazing, enabling, and englightening wisdom she shared.... She has got perfect wit - especially when at 14.50 second, after video clip the lights did not come back - she said, and "here we are.... (lights did not come back) in dark"...... all the reason to love her forever.

I made it a habit of writing a comment after or while watching a video . Most of the time i have nothing useful to say yet it helped me as if a week later someone likes my comment i get a notification that acts like a reminder. Spaced repitition makes it so that i recall the video and the comment. All of that helps me enhance my memory . Watch ad many ted talks as you can each week consistantly (not daily to avoid burnouts ). One day you can reach a stage where u watch one daily as it becomes a habit

Amazing! This is what some people call the law of attraction. What we think becomes our reality. We are responsible for everything happening to us in our lives. Awesome Talk. I learned two things here: The power of mindset and that we are all here to help each other like this woman is doing here for the world thru a TEDtalk. The late Dr. Wayne Dyer said, dont die with the music still in you and the world is hearing her music. We all have purpose. To anyone reading this, 2020 is over let go of the hardships from it, 2021 is your year, you dont have to wait til New Years, let the world hear your song. It all starts with Changeing your mindset. This talk has actually led me to reconsider my approach to physical training, since I was 15 years old I train hard almost every day, literally every muscle in my body aches, but I had adopted this mentality of always doing more because it is never enough and never be satisfied mainly because of all the content of the media, and as time passed I did not see results that I liked, I always believed that I was not doing enough or that I had to criticize, I could not sleep peacefully, I did everything wrong as long as I did not leave my 110% every day. When I started training with other people (who also had an athletic background) and had them do half of what I did, after a few weeks they showed muscle gains greater than what I was getting with the same type of training. The difference was that they believed that what they did was more than enough and they always felt satisfied with their efforts looking to the future positively with respect to the results, for my part I did the opposite... I don't want to say that what was exposed in the video has given me an immediate response, but I definitely need to reconsider the mindset I've built all these years, especially for my emotional health.

​@@garimakharra1784 First of all, clarify that I am not a specialist and my opinion is based on and influenced by my experience. I think that the objective you are aiming for goes beyond just changing your mentality, of course that is essential, but you have to support it with changes in your behavior as well. I think that's the beauty of wanting to develop oneself, any positive change generates a chain of small changes in other areas of life, I recommend looking at it as if it were a synergy. For example, if I want to study and learn more, I must first be aware of my way of learning, you can ask yourself questions like, what do I do when I read? Do I take notes? Do I make summaries? so that you can make adjustments that allow you to have a meaningful understanding. That requires an effort at a cognitive and emotional level because sometimes it is more entertaining to be on Netflix or Instagram than reading, but you manage your emotions in a way that helps you stay focused. In addition, to enhance your learning you must have an adequate sleep schedule, a good diet, among other activities. Finally, I believe that one of the most important aspects, regarding the development of a growth mentality, is knowing yourself, knowing what you think, what you believe, and whether or not that helps you to be who you want to be, since You are with yourself 24 hours a day, so it is important to educate and guide your inner voice towards a better lifestyle.

This is a great talk! I'm so glad I listened to it. I live alone, I used to like to be alone but now I'd rather be with people and I'm in the doldrums. I really needed to hear this talk to inspire me to look at my situation and my opportunities positively, and start making all the parts of my life, including my solitude, experiences I can enjoy.

I'm sure she was new to this, speaking in front of many and also noticed that some of the audiences are older than her, I will surely tremble like her coz I will think my audiences have more to share. But this was few years ago I believe that if she continue as a motivational speaker she one of the best now.

I once had toothache for 3 days straight. Chronic pain. In the end I laid in bed and "wished" the pain away. Made my brain believe the pain wasn't there any more. And after a couple hours the pain went. This was the placebo effect.

It wasn't actually. You calmed your amgdyla, which reduced your fight or flight mechanism, which reduced your pain. It's just a different mechanism.
