This is so great..I am doing a front lacing, and so far have only seen where the grommets are sandwiched between two bones, or where there are 3 bones and the grommets go through the middle one...but I don't have a lot of width and was concerned that putting the grommets behind only one bone would not be secure enough!! Bridal Sewing Techniques do I need bonding to make a corset? It’s a high collared dress with sleeves I’m making and it has no boning in the front or sides.

It is best, yes. Otherwise the gown can look like a drawstring effect. The bodice will just scrunch up as you tighten the ribbon. Don't be intimidated. Boning is easy to work with. I have a few videos on here about it. Also- you'll feel awesome for having taken the leap in your skills!

So you heat sealed the edge! AIEeee!! I can see me lighting a wedding gown on fire.... you just continue to surprise me. Is there a guide for what to heat seal? Obviously not cotton but... ? Thank you! Yes, if you aren't terribly experienced in heat sealing, def test out a spot first. Some ignite quickly! The very open gauzy ones are the most likely to flare up. Natural fibers turn to a dark crumbly carbon. Synthetics give us that nice melt.

Great video! I have a question. What if you have a dress that zips up half way, but at the top you have a 5" gap? The lace up will be fine at the top, but what about the bottom half? She wants to really pull the lace up tight, but I don't know whether to trim away fabric just at the lower half of CB or take in the side seams in order for that area to be pulled tight but still have the lace up displayed (not scrunched together edges).

Hi Carina, I would suggest to make a nice triangle starting from 5 “ on the top and down to a point where you want to stop lacing ( normally halfway between waist and hip lines). Just cut access of the fabric. You may even make opening bigger than 5 inch if it will look better on her.

Thanks for the tutorial. When do you need boning? I've seen videos converting zippers to lacing. About half are boning the dress. The rest just reinforce the fabric before adding the eyelets. I have a simple sundress, do I need to bone it?

If you want to have tension with the corset, it is advised. If you have no boning and lace it tightly, the sides of the corset will scrunch up.

hey! im altering my dress for formal (australian prom), and what the shape/style is is basically a corset top but with a zip in the back, then tulle layers as a skirt with an underlayer of satin. the zip goes from the top of the corset-style top of dress, and around 10-12cm down into the tulle area. the zip hasn't got much non-tulle fabric around it, in the tulle skirt. do you think it would be better to simply take out the zip and sew up the tulle part together, then just have the corset-style top with the corset back? or do you think i could implement the corset back down into the skirt too?

Hey so I got a dress that are several sizes too big an was wondering could I do a corset back instead of taking it in at the sides because there is a lot of fabric that needs to be stitched in that case. Do could I possibly take it in at the sides about an inch and the rest of the fabric trimmed down into a corset back? This is for the bodice part. I do know I'd have to take the lace part at the bottom of the dress off the hem it again then reapply the lace. I don't know whether or not the opening is supposed to be at the knees. My mom says so but I don't know. So I'm just going to hem the length instead of cutting the skirt of moving it up and then stitching it back on. If I was to do that I'd have to remove the hook and eye closures that attach the train to the dress. (I'm trying to have this done the most simplistic way I can, I'd also have to move some if the lace appliques on the dress to alter it) ( do to the amount needed and the lack of money I'd just alter it at school if I can. Fashions.) Sorry about the long comment but I'm curious on what'd you suggest

Yes, when quite a bit is needed to be taken in, I do sometimes take the sides in a smidge *and* put in a corset.

The dress has to be quite a bit too big. Add the zipper & the work out the bunching that comes up at the new bottom of the zipper by making a long taper into the center back skirt seam

In principle you could finish the eyelets with hand sewing. Quite a task, however. It would have to be very neat and tight stitching. Something that needs to be trained enough for the result to be pretty enough for a wedding dress. Using grommets is much easier and faster.

I often use hypo cement. It is listed on & linked to on the products page of my website. It is a clear cement that will help keep that seam together in addition to reinforcing it with stitches. Often, if I'm worried that a knot or a seam with come undone, I will put just a tiny drop on the thread of the knot/stitch. You'll see me do this often in my videos. :)

I wouldn't recommend doing this project to a beginner or a seamster with a moderate sewing skill level. This would be for an experienced or professional seamster. You can decide from there what you are comfortable with! :) Good luck. :)

How did you paint the grommets after they were installed?

Wittle bitty paintbrush with matching ivory chalkpaint. This is done after the final adjustment fitting, so there is less likely to be chipping or wearing away by the wedding day. I explain to the bride that the ivory may come off in dry cleaning. The grommets only come in white, nickel, black, and brass, usually. Another seamstress and I joked about buying an oven and diy powder coating a huge batch of grommets. lol

Hannah Frankenberger some people do. I never have. I think it could prove to be impossible on some of the thicker gowns, but thinner ones should be okay. I could see where hand setting could take longer and be more difficult to get accurate results, but with practice, would probably work just fine.

I hand set grommets with a hammer, but it is a pain in the but and I hope to upgrade to a press soon. (I have also used specialty pliers, but because of the uneven pressure that puts on the grommets they never go in correctly when i used those, so, for now, i stick with the hammer approach.)

What’s the difference between grommet / eyelets? Is one stronger than the other?

Kathy Basham I may have this wrong, but I'm thinking eyelet is in reference to the hole. The grommet is the metal pieces of hardware, connected together. Eyelets can be punch holes in leather, holes in fabric that have been embroidered/reinforced with stitches, (think eyelet lace), or I'm seeing that some packs of grommets are sold as "eyelets". Does anyone else in the BST community here know of another discriminating features?

I use eyelets for my doll clothes I make and they don't have backing and yes grommets are stronger because I did this same thing to a friend wedding dress

@@BridalSewing That is correct. Eyelet is the whole in general, made in purpose and often for a string or something similar to go through. Grommet is a piece, usually metal, used to reinforce the eyelet.

Like your technique! Love the grommets. The only issue I have with the lace up backs is the fact that they are not a cure for every situation in which a gown is too small. I have more than once had clients who brought me gowns that in order to fit would have had to have the lacing go down to the hem or at least as far as the mermaid begins would have had to be laced 6 inches apart. This is not a cure for every situation any more than any other one thing is. Too getting extra fabric in the right color can be almost impossible. I have even had girls by two gowns to get enough fabric to go around them. Almost everything can be done but its not free! Sometimes -especially in the case of prom dresses- its just plain not worth it. I feel that if the lace up must go down past the hips it really doesn't work well.

Hello. I purchased a pre-owned Lazaro gown online, got a great deal, but thru my own fault, I purchased a dress that was way too small for me. It was marked a size 10 but fits like a 2 (I'm a street size 6). I am curious to know, if the front of the gown fits, but there's a 7 inch gap at the top of the gown in the back, do you think it's possible changing out the zipper to a corset closure can make the gown wearable and attractive? I can pull the gown on over my hips without a problem but there's no way it will ever zip, due to the huge gap. There is a lace overlay that has a lot of empty space (no applique, just tulle, so there is no fabric to let out. ) I'm sure you can't say for sure without seeing it, but have you ever done such an extreme size change on a dress before? Thank you!

Jeri Young oh, I've done that many times. Your question will be whether or not you can find a local seamster to do this for you. It would be best to ask him/her. That's where it counts! :)

Tyrine DeB it is going to vary based upon the local economy. It also depends upon the amount of beadwork/boning changes. But, it should avg about 2 hours worth of work. Whatever that rate would be for your area. :)

Do ever mess up and cut thru a hem or other mistake, or do you have insurance for that? What do you do about that?? I love your videos.

Benene Lane I really don't. But, it's not that I'm perfect, but rather, I got it out of my system years ago! I learned the hard way to triple check behind where I am cutting. If I were to ruin a hem, I would probably just replace the layer/ panel that I messed up. I would be very up front about it. I wouldn't try to hide it. I think you need to read your clients, too. Once, I had my sewing machine needle scratch the satin. I let the bride try it on & saw that it wasn't that noticable & she didn't notice it. Then I told her. She was completely chill. One other time, my electrician had left a jagged clamp by my iron and it ripped the tulle on a skirt. I showed them. Told them what happened, and repaired it. Thankfully, it wasn't visible at all. If someone was not understanding and was irate, I would probably just ask for the receipt and the gown and refund their purchase price, not charge my bill, (of course) but they would have to surrender the gown. (Because I just bought it. If they didn't want to surrender the gown and start over, then they would have to agree with me on a damage amount. I am insured, but I wouldn't pull from that over something like this.

Thank you for that useful information, I really have anxiety cutting chiffon in process of the rolled hem . Do you have a video on how you hold your scissors ? It takes me forever with very small scissors. How did you repair the tulle?
