Changeable Hawk-Eagle being mobbed by Drongo filmed at Vansda National Park, Gujarat, India.
At Vansda National Park, we witnessed the well-known MOBBING behavior of drongos. A Changeable Hawk-Eagle was quietly perched on a tall tree. Despite its calmness, drongos and treepies began to gather around, and even sunbirds started their alarm calls. After some time, the drongos showed their aggressiveness, launching a series of attacks over the eagle's crest. Initially irritated, the eagle made some hostile moves but soon ignored the attacking birds and continued preening its feathers.
DRONGO FAMILY AS MOBBING BIRDS:
Drongos are known for their aggressive behavior towards larger birds, including raptors like Eagles and Owls. This behavior is typically observed as part of their protective strategy to defend their territory or nests. Drongos employ a combination of direct attacks and deceptive tactics to ward off predators, including mimicking the alarm calls of other species to create confusion and scare off intruders.
Here are a few key points about drongos' interactions with raptors:
MOBBING BEHAVIOR: Drongos often engage in mobbing behavior, where they gather in groups to harass and drive away larger birds or predators that pose a threat to their nests or young.
ALARM CALLS: Drongos are known for their vocal mimicry. They can imitate the alarm calls of other bird species, which can trigger a panic response in the predator or alert other birds in the area to the presence of danger.
AGGRESSIVE FLIGHT: Drongos are agile flyers and can perform swift and aggressive maneuvers to physically attack and chase away raptors.
These defensive tactics are quite effective and have earned drongos a reputation for being fearless and highly protective of their territory.
