Changelings hide right under our noses, sometimes while wearing our noses. Changelings get to re-sculpt themselves like Clayface whenever they like and if you can’t come up with some shenanigans with that you’re just not trying hard enough. Their origins are mysterious and secretive, and so are they most of the time. I’m a DM and made an NPC changeling bard who’s been spying on the party since the beginning of our game. We’re a good 20 sessions in now. He has been in every town they’ve been in, under a different guise each time. Vetting them to see how tenacious or tricky, good or evil they might be while also gauging each PC’s strengths/weakness before opening up to them about the big finale quest line. He’s basically a Harper agent who’s essentially putting together an A team to go after the Xanathar’s guild in waterdeep. He also gets stories for his side hobby as a minstrel as the group expands their adventuring careers.

Quick update to the changeling lore: in the new Monsters of the Multiverse book, they revise Changelings to be either Medium or Small and be able to switch between them when they shapeshift. They're also considered Fey

Funny idea: if more than 1 player wants to be a changeling they could know eachother and use the same "mask" playing it off as being twin siblings.

I'm playing a Changeling College of Eloquence Bard - currently level 5 - with 18 Charisma, the Actor feat and Expertise in Deception and Persuasion. It's insane what can be pulled off. Employing Silver Tongue means never rolling less than a 20 for Deception & Persuasion (with a maximum roll of 30) and the Actor feat allows for Advantage on those Deception rolls when disguised as someone else. Not much use in combat, but that's not what the build is for. It's the party face. That said, Unsettling Words in combination with Suggestion can (and has) resulted in high CR monster surrender and/or monsters turning on their allies on the battlefield. Low Wisdom monsters are particularly vulnerable. This build excels at the Social Interaction pillar of play. It hides in plain sight, wears no magical disguise, cannot be discerned as being in disguise and can pretty easily Persuade and Deceive it's way in and out of locations and situations. That's backed up with Invisibility and Minor Illusion as insurance. So far, it's been a stack of fun - I'm particularly enjoying the fact that my own party still don't know I'm a Changeling :)

Yes my goblin persona also was a bit too tall for the goblins. RAW say that you can change into a dwarf with atleast 120cm so, it may be a very tall gnome, halfling or goblin

I'm playing a Changeling Moon Druid. I know there's nothing much there to compliment the druid since they took away Unnerving Visage from the UA. But hear me out: My Changeling uses his Shapechange ability with his wildshape to look like monsters rather than animals. He doesn't take their stats but he has used them to fool others, he used it once to turn into terrifying creatures, terrorize a town and then show up as a "Slayer" to hunt himself. This was how the very first session played out with the party catching on to the deception. It may not be mechanically powerful like the Aasimar or Dwarf, but it's flavourful. If I ever get him to level 14 though, I'm hoping the DM will allow me to change out the Thousand Forms feature for something more useful since I can already do that at will for the most part...

He's actually from a half-elf merchant family that thought he had a form of albinism and isolated him as a child before realizing what he was and selling him to a business associate to be used as a spy. Shenanigans happened, he was sold again to a rakshasa, lost his eye, ran away, and he later took up bounty hunting to support himself

I started a changeling with the persona of a (yes very tall) goblin to appear with my new group. They were exploring a cave of goblins and "she" was the formerly shaman "she told" until her tribe was captured by a witch doctor. Finally the group helped her escaping and she joined the group. She is a druid of the sheperd and she has full control of changing her form with "shapechanger" and "wildshape". Her beloved persona is a female faun she met years ago. She was beautiful, natural... perfect. She made her as her main persona, with hooves, antlers. It fit's very well

I have been playing a changeling monk for some time, mostly posing as a clumsy old man who is often confused of his purpose in a place and/or party. He has also posed as a wild weredog and werebasilisk, and even once was a sad clown in a victorian murder mystery. I use the character in community oneshots where I usually don't disclose his race or class, then surprising the party with kung fu fighting styles on the first combat. this character has honestly been my most fulfilling one to play so far

i think an overlooked subclass that would fit a changeling is the trickery domain cleric. like the trickery cleric's entire point is being deceptive ad cunning, not to mention that according to the lore a large percentage of changelings ALREADY worship the trickster deity known as the traveler. if you use tasha's alternate origin manager you can relocate that +2 to wisdom and you're pretty much set.

Fun changeling concept I've played: The Ultimate Shapeshifter Obviously changeling, pick druid, and then go moon druid. Your "Ultimate" shapeshifting gets stronger the high level you get, but moon druid is definitely a wild shape based subclass, so being able to transform into any person and any animal is definitely a fun time!

I am currently playing a changeling who is the son of a noble woman whose husband was a doppelganger. After he was about six his father left and his mother grew Ill, she actually dies of a heartache because she truly loved the doppelganger after she found out who he was. He then ran away from home after she died and joined a traveling performing circus. When he was about 17 he ends up stumbling into a massive mimic the size of a house and outsmart the mimic so the mimic offers up its own child to make him go away. So he has five baby mimics as his 'true family.' and the biggest one is his cart. The rest are jewelry hanging out on his outfit. He is a Shadow sorcerer. He was born under a dark star his powers come from the shadowfell. He is trying to desperately to find his true father to find out why the heck he left. And it goes by the name Dorian Belmont. And he is into guys.

My changeling is also a wild magic sorceress. I am on a quest to find shiftweave, but you probably know what that is if changelings interest you. I would say my magic is 15% defensive, 40% offensive, and 45% illusion/invisibility/utility. I know how to use the streets to my advantage as a former street urchin and, if chased, I can simply subtle spell/invisibility, change outfits, and become someone else. Basically, if I'm in a city you can't catch me. Also, my extra languages are draconic and infernal so I can pass as tiefling or dragonborn on a whim.

i've just started making a changeling and i was looking at stuff to see if i was creative or not (i always worry im copying something) and i came up with a arcane trickster rogue that has killed and taken the place of a high elf (preferably a noble adolescent or even the prince) but after some suspicious new habits he has gone around to "explore the world" before his arranged marriage. if he were to return to the city he would surely be confronted with his questionable decisions.

Changeling multi-class Bard + Beastheart Caretaker with the Mimic companion. Or Druid. Either way, a Changeling with wearable Mimic companion, using Beastheart class features, would be a great play all-around.

The Monster of the Multiverse reprints make Changelings even better able to change their size between medium and small and also gives the option to have +1 in 3 different scores which is probably more useful overall to have better dex and con. This is THE choice for if you want to play a "Mystique" type character, to get remotely as close you need two feats: Eldritch Adept to pick up Mask of Many Faces and the Actor feat but Shapeshifting avoids the problems of it being an illusion that doesn't pass up to scrutiny.

I created a crime family with a changeling Godfather type character and a human wife. Their family had a tradition of making a big heist once per generation in order to maintain their prestige in the Thieves Guild. Vicarion Meladus of the Meladus family is my character. Vicarion is the only son and heir to the Meladus family and is charged with making a grand heist worthy of catching his steely eyed fathers attention. He would always appear as a beautiful woman with white hair. Never revealing his identity to anyone except those he trusts implicitly. The funny part is he always gives everyone the cold shoulder when they try to make advances on him. When people wonder why he always tells them "thats my mother youre talking to" XD

I recently wrote up a story for a Changeling I'd be playing in a campaign, and it's interesting that her backstory and your conclusion are perfect mirror images from one another. Us, as humans can only imagine what it's like to be anyone you want to be, but the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I think a big part of a changeling's troubles can be that, despite being able to be anyone, they can't be their true selves. They, far more often than not, have to don disguises, pretend to be other people, and forge lives that aren't entirely theirs for their own safety. I drew a lot of lines between that core concept of "I can't be publicly me or I'll be in danger," with marginalized groups, specifically LGBTQ+ people.

My changeling doesn't know she's a changeling. Her earliest memory is in hospital as her father tells her of a horrific accident only she survived. As far as she knows, she IS the only child of this noble from Faerun. Not so deep down, her father knows the truth, but he's so devoted to protecting the girl with his daughter's face that he's taken pains to hide any inconsistencies. Made sure her convalescence included training in speech, mannerisms, and customs to disguise her obvious low birth, since his darling daughter suddenly knew thieves cant and crept around like she was trespassing. Over 12yrs, she becomes so cultured that any whispers that surrounded her at court are silenced, either from her charm or the glint of feral intimidation behind her eyes. However none of this has stopped her from feeling like an intruder in her own life, like she's wearing someone else's shoes. And as much as she loves her father, she can tell he's hiding something from her. When the campaign started, she'd slipped away from home in secret and gone to the place of her accident, hoping to find the truth he's tried to protect her from.

I have a changling artificer who was part of a pirate crew. The crew was mostly changelingsand had a rock gnome barbarian as their captain. I choose battle Smith. My steel defender is a monitor lizard. The lizard in IRL is amphibious, so the DM had no qualms with it. My group has healers, so my focus is on diversions cantrips and behind the scenes action. Magic stones & catapult for low profile infiltration. Still ironing out the other stuff

I have a changeling, born sorcerer, grew up urchin and picked up rogue. They basically have used their natural ability to walk into people's homes as the owner to loot the place of the most valuable objects and fence them. They have used it to turn into guards to rob nobles. Used it to turn into a werewolf (no tail of course) to intimidate people, to get out of a fight. Currently level 9 and can't wait to see what other shenanigans we get up to.

I'm actually just starting to create a Changeling Rogue and it's as Rogue as possible stat and skill wise... It sucks that we can't upload pictures to our comments... I'm wondering if I could have gotten some better rolls, but it was random... It was the very first set of numbers made by the RNG of a Character Creation App... I used Strength for the dump stat at 8... Dexterity is a 16, it was where I put the +1 from racial bonus... Constitution is 14.. Intelligence is 10... Wisdom is 12 and Charisma is 15 with the Racial Bonus..

The big thing about the Changeling shapechanging is the height. But I have this idea for a Rogue/Warlock so I can just give them Alter Self so they can become a dwarf, halfling, gnome, goliath, or other different sized race. They also have a Bag of Holding where they keep all their clothing and accessories.

When it says you can only have the same basic arrangement of limbs, obviously centaurs are out, but can a changeling mimic my (variant) winged tiefling? I'm sure they couldn't actually fly if they do, but can they at all? What about a Tabaxi, can they make a tail? Or a Tiefling with their horns? I would almost say yes or it would all get very limiting very quickly, as long as the new appendages don't give any added benefit and are just aesthetic.

I'm playing a changling druid of stars. they're looking for their parents after being run out of town a few years ago, so they don't really trust anyone further than they can throw them. They might have been discovered by the party though after stumbling upon the bandit hideout and having to change masks or have to have 3 v 1 fight with bandits. my GM has capped my change shape ability to my intelligence score to keep from going wild with my ability, but I don't mind.

I have dreams of someday mixing two levels of genie warlock with a swashbuckler as a Changeling. Easy to sneak attack, free disengage, combined with blade cantrips and extra patron damage, not to mention your personal safe house that can be used for all kinds of RP. Something like a human traveling caravan of traders and entertainers, which is a front for all manner of nefarious shenanigans. Mostly changelings, with some others mixed in.. Tolerated by some, disliked by major localized crime syndicates, you get blackjacked while fencing and sold into slavery aboard a pirate ship. You keep your head down and watch, murder and assume the role of a pirate. Say, a hobgoblin killer for hire. You become him, do what you have to. Ship wrecks, wash up on a beach, search for fresh water and food leads to a cave and you find a noble genie trapped in a ring. You have three wishes, the last is the genie's freedom after being forced into servitude yourself. They're elated, vengeful, but hold off killing you and find humor in binding you to their whims. You must travel the world in search of other trapped genie to free, and all oppressed against their will, with all the accompanying treasure to be had. Maybe you do your best kenku impersonation, mimicking poorly to see if your party picks up on it, a protector of a murder if street kenku that feed you all they hear and maybe to atone for the evil you did as the hobgoblin pirate. Later down the line, you might revert back to the human rogue once you trust, or are called out by your party.. In the genie ring are a collection of your three or four personalities, with all manner of mask pictures adorning the walls.. Oh man, I miss playing.

I recently read in the Shape Changer feature that you can switch between small and medium creatures. Would this have been a new update to the changeling race page in the book Mordekainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse? Basically some halflings had us all tied to a poll and I was going to change to a slimmer form to escape. Our dm didn’t know much about changelings so he asked if anything could stop a transformation and so we made this rule for the sake of storytelling, also it meant that a halfling could bonk me in the head lol

I would have it that it takes a lot out of them and they can't change again until they recuperate. Also they have to shed their skin when they change.

Have been running Eberron the last war and our party just split off for character development. Allowing me to bring in my Changeling Echo Knight. The fun ideas of role playing excites me beyond all belief. Being able to swap spots with my Echo as a bonus action and change appearance and voice all in one turn is insane. My question is does the Echo Knight still show your true form or does it copy your appearance?

Honestly the most frustrating thing I've got to say about changeling rn is that my dm and I can't figure out if Faerun changelings are the ones from the feywild descended from elves who have darkvision, or the ones who once were human and made this way by some god or another and don't have darkvision. It's quite frustrating honestly.

So I can turn into Julia Vins (Muscle Barbie) or the Rock at will? ...Sign my character up! lol I know there is a lot of overlap but Warlock for Mask of Many Faces Invocation is super-cool (to me) to be able to change clothing appearance at will to match. If someone can see through the illusion (of your clothes), they still see your race/gender as legit even "if" false.

I have a warlock (lurker in the deep) changeling with the marine backgroundSo far we haven't been able to do much with it except when the party sent me to seduce a Minotaur early on in the campaign. It was very awkward for my Character since he had to play a female minotaur and go on a date. Other time was when he wanted to ask some racist elf merchants some questions. To an extent he flipped them off while everyone was eating at a campfire by turning into the same elf that asked them questions and talked in that voice. Which pissed them off. Other times I most use it for intimidation since one second it's a normal person and the next second he's a living mannequin. It's been a fun first campaign just wish that there was more rp in our group.

So you said changling bard of eloquence, and from my understanding and a quick Google search is a bard who aligns with politics and speeches and such (correct me if im wrong), but what about a bard (of really any subclass I guess) who rather takes a kind of scam based background and infiltrates concerts and other artist's performances, takes that one perfect memory feat, and then copies their performance to a tee in a different town, then after their own production of an identical performance they'd eventuality be getting payed a ridiculous amount of money from increasingly more and more famous preformances. But then the hunt has began as bounty hunters and resentful artist's and maybe one or two particular ex-performers turned bounty hunters as no one would believe that they where the real original famous people, because rumors spread that they where preforming in a different town and the town that the real artists where in thought that the real artists where actually frauds, and after beatings and jail time have become revenge filled villains out to hunt you down. It is up to you to blend in and keep up your own luxurious lifestyle on the run from the faces and songs you have stolen.

Changelings can also offer much more unique ways to handle certain problems due to their ability to literally become....well, just about anyone. Is there an active assassination plot targeting an important NPC that the party needs to protect (like a friendly noble/royal, and if that NPC dies it might somehow spark a war [or their heir would be much worse and/or is very much *not* friendly to the party)? Have the party approach that NPC to explain the situation and then try to persuade the NPC to let the Changeling take their place in order to act as bait, and thus lure the would-be assassins into a trap where the party would be lying in wait for the assassins to reveal themselves, while the actual NPC is being hidden somewhere safe. The party managed to kill a bandit undetected near the bandit's main camp? The Changeling can shapeshift into that slain Bandit (while the rest of the party actually disposes of the body) so that the Changeling can infiltrate the camp undetected in order to either grab an important item without raising an alarm, or by throwing the camp into disarray by assassinating the main camp leaders one by one, while the party waits to jump in only if an alarm is raised and the Changeling is somehow discovered or detected. Changelings can offer some very fun options for how to deal with certain situations, and if they happen to be of a Neutral alignment, they can likely function well as part of both a Good or Evil party.

For some reason, I picture a changeling bard seducing men and women to get whatever he/she wants, wherever he/she wants. Another picture is a genie warlock conning nobles by pretending to be a genie. Quick question, are changelings referred to as he or she when in certain forms or is that offensive?
