Changing a Marshalltown Trowel Handle

First, why would you want to trade out the handle? 46 years of laying and Rose was always the best choice back in the day but the Marshalltown has pretty much gone to the top of the list for comfort, durability and cost. To be honest I've never seen a Marshalltown handle ever break or needed to be replaced. Wore the blade out on a few. And as far as that horse shit way you put that replacement handle on, you drop it into a pot of water you've brought to a boil and when it gets pliable you just push the shank in and give it a quarter turn. Got to teach these kids everything.

Why would the handle matter? So much that you would like to change it. This is a legitimate question to help me understand.

Its a feeling thing i really like the blade i have but the handle is super uncomfortable and wiggling a bit so rather then get a new i want to fix it

I had a leather handle W.rose that I changed to a plastic handle. I had to cut the old leather handle with a grinder. Heat up the plastic handle and push it through the trowel. Came out nice. Couple months later i accidentally dropped it in a 1 story brick wall. Didn’t bother getting it. Still missed the trowel still lol.

Yes here is the way to do it . 1 put the trowel blade down in a vice. The vice should be around the tang with the handle facing up, 2 the jaws of the Vic should be below the handle and not allow the handle to slip through. The jaws should not be nipped closed , but free to alow movement. 3 tap the area where the round tang turns into the blade, this should be a 90 degree bend. The blade should come out of the handle downwards. A blacksmith of 30 yes showed me this. Apparently its the exact opposite of how they are affixed during manufacture. When putting new one in use wooden or rubber mallet, tap many times with slow progression, plastic or rubber handles should not be too cold, may have to put in warm water or use hairdryer to warm up. Put trowel back in vice, nip jaws tight then tap away. If it does not go far enough in on first attempt, remove, warm up and try again. Once on correct, remove, glue and refit. It's a pain in the backside if it doesn't fit first time, all bout patience, too far too fast and kaput. Hope this helps. P.s mine was a wooden handled Marshall town, smithy took 30 seconds to replace.

Boil the handle and while it’s hot, it slides right on. Just let it cool and absolutely don’t use any glue

I just bought a new wooden handle but I torched the tang to slide in I used epoxy as glue and didn't work :( help please

Firstly I’ve no idea why you’d change from a durasoft handle to that thing you’ve put on, I’ve used Marshalltown with that handle since about 89ish, no complaints here. I’ve retired now thankfully and I still don’t like that London pattern trowel, Philadelphia all day long for me.

He's lucky the handle didn't crack. Also no way u just hammer that durasoft handle just off. Tried it once, needed a grinder to get it off.

We've since found if you heat them up they come off alot easier. There was no angle grinder involved

You just need to boil the need handle, slide it on easily and let it cool. No glue and is the proper way

Just seen 2 online with plastic handles, defo motown, but maybe not that model, one was a philidelphia, the other wide London not sure though
